- The Costa Rican town of La Fortuna is famed for its volcanos. Nestled alongside the more famous Arenal volcano sits the now dormant Cerro Chato which last erupted 3,500 years.
At its peak, 1140 metres up, is a 500m wide green lagoon within the crater. The steep, treacherous route is illegal to climb but many adventurers attempt to ascend the peak every day.

That climb scared me. My husband said he would do it in flip flops lol. 😆 He can climb just about anything as he is from the countryside in Jamaica. They love to climb.

Must have been quite the adventure.
The reason is illegal is we don’t want to risk our first line people in case the volcano explote, you get lost or bitten or drawn or something. Yeah you can go, the problem is you are risking other people live.
Thanks for commenting! Cerro Chato has reportedly been dormant for around 3500 years so I don’t think an explosion is the risk.
What’s more, there were local Costa Rican guides taking backpackers up the same route. A tour guide in town even gave us a map to get there! So I don’t think getting lost is an option when the only way is up 😂
I actually did my research before embarking and I don’t think anyone has drowned or been bitten (apart from Mozzies) on this route.
It is not an easy trek, and we did warn viewers in our comments.
However, this trek is no secret in La Fortuna. If Costa Rican authorities thought there was a serious risk, closing the route, fencing off the access, adding security or fining trespassers would be truly enforced (like it is in other locations).

@@Outlawes not because cerro chato, is because if the Arenal enter in activity, the access to cerro chato would be close, and extremely dangerous.
