Synopsis
This is the fourth installment of the special drama featuring Masakazu Tamura as Nemuri Kyoshiro. The scene where he comes to the rescue of a woman on horseback amidst exploding flames is the highlight of this work. Subsequently, the expression as he delivers the finishing blow to the saved woman with his own hands is a poignant and must-see portrayal of the true essence of Kyoshiro's character!
About Nemuri Kyoshiro
Nemuri Kyoshiro, the main character of Shibata Renzaburo's samurai novel series, began serialization in 1956 in Weekly Shincho as Nemuri Kyoshiro Burai Hikae. This series, alongside Gomi Yasuyuki's Yagyu Bugeicho sparked a samurai boom and led to numerous adaptations in film, television, and theatre.
Kyoshiro is a complex character, blending the nihilistic swordsman archetype, originated from Kyokutei Bakin's Nanso Satomi Hakkenden, with Shibata's distinctive dandyism. Born of a Portuguese Jesuit and a Japanese woman, Kyoshiro embodies a sense of nihilism and a cold brutality, often killing without remorse. He carries the famed Musou Masamune sword, historically linked to Toyotomi Hideyori, and employs a unique sword technique known as Engetsu Sappo. As noted by film critic Sato Tadao, this series breaks from traditional Kabuki, where romantic roles are reserved for handsome men and heroic figures typically avoid romantic entanglements, contrasting with Western ideals of chivalry.

He does what he does because he was conceived in a satanic ritual. What is working in him is hell fire. Which is why he keeps killing and putting himself in harms way although he declares he doesn't want to. At least three times in every episode.
This character is a personification of darkness disguising as light to do as much damage as possible while pretending to act out of compassion.
It's that simple. An old trick of the industry.

Nemuri Kyoshiro purposely came late for the duel to ward off all those spectators. In the end no one alive managed to get a view of the famous full moon killing techinque. In this episode, we get to view the full moon killing technique not as a killing technique, but as a sorcery like eye deceiving technique that tricks the opponent.

Special Note :- This Made-For-TV entries featuring Nemuri Kyoshiro which the main Star named Masakazu Tamura also appeared in the same title at 45-mins TV series slot with 26 Episodes ( currently showing in this SvsN Channel ). But there's only one remaining outing with the fifth and final title called "Nemuri Kyoshiro - The Final" ( 眠狂四郎 The Final ) at 130 minutes which was shown on Fuji TV 8 Channel on 17th February, 2018. So, we are awaiting for that 2018 TV release, please. Rob.
I wonder why it took Fuji TV so long to make the final 5th episode? Anyway, this 5 series TV movie is a great tribute to the late Masakazu Tamura. He is one of the greatest TV star and samurai actor in Japan.

I’m a bit partial to Ichikawa Raizo’s version of Nemuri Kyoshiro, but maybe I should try this...
Tamura’s version (especially the TV version in 1970s) is highly recognized even by the author himself, worth trying.

Probably late, but 'Samurai vs Ninja' has a series of the 90s version of Nemuri (Masakazu Tamura) weekly (In his 20s) on Sunday nights here. This special episode has 4 TV movies I think, they have Nemuri approaching his 50's, even more of a lesson on Buddhist restraint, though he still drives every other martial artist absolutely insane. His cronies, his former pickpocket 'best friend' who wishes there was more (a semi-respectable inn in the bad side of town), his old spy friend a respectable police helper now.
They wait for Nemuri to do something, but he probably is going to hit the Temples, prays a lot, offers challengers they should find something better with their lives.
Plenty will still test him, but he probably regards the whole incident as continued bad luck.
The most evil and depraved, or those who disrespect his friends, well.......
