Men's Ear Hair Waxing

  • Men's Ear Hair Waxing is a very common service, but perfecting your ear hair waxing technique can be tricky.
Keep in mind, you don’t want to just shove a stick with a ball of wax up in the client's ear! Going too far up into the ear can seriously damage your ear. You only want to remove the hairs right on the inside of the base of your ear (called the Tragus), nothing further.
When choosing a wax for ear hair waxing, I recommend using only hard wax.
Hard wax only adheres to the hair, not the skin (like soft wax), so it hurts less than soft wax and is safer on the skin. You can also go over the same area multiple times without any fear of lifting the skin. You never want to use soft wax on extra sensitive areas like the inner ear or inner nose.
Hard wax is more similar to candle wax. You lay it on and wait for it to cool. This allows for the wax to encapsulate the hair and suction cup it so when you pull the wax off, the hair comes with it.
For this demonstration, I am using Mermaid Wax Signature Series.
    To Wax Ear Hair:
First, you’ll clean the area with a pre wax cleanser. Some people like to then use a pre-wax oil, I tend to not feel the need to do that unless the client has really dry skin.
Next, get a tiny ball of wax on your small stick (the sticks I use are 4.5x1/12th size, etc). You want the wax to be slow moving, like honey or molasses. If the wax falls right off your stick, it’s too hot and you will burn your client. If it doesn’t move at all, then the wax is too cool and won’t be able to adhere to the hair.
Once you get a small ball of wax on your stick, place it just in the inside of your client's ear. I only recommend going about half a centimeter inside the ear with your stick. Spin the stick around so you can ensure you get all the hair.
Wait until the wax feels hard to the touch, then grab the base of the center of the ear and pull! PULL HARD! Don’t hesitate as this will cause a lot more pain to your client.
I always check the ear and see if any hairs were missed. Ear hair can go in all different directions so it’s not uncommon to have to do a second pass. Everyone is different though so it really depends on what your client needs.
Next I will lift up the ear so the wax doesn’t get stuck in the client’s hair and lay a small amount of wax along the edge of the ear since hair can grow on there as well depending on the client.
After the wax I will use a little post wax lotion or even some hydrocortisone cream just on the outside of the ear.
