- Back in 1988, The Washington State Department of Transportation drove East/West on SR-500 and recorded video to document the highway. This was part of a project that photographed/videotaped the states highways every couple of years. This video now resides at The Washington State Archives who were kind enough to share it.
Eastbound: 00:03
Westbound: 15:34
Wow, just wow. It's almost completely recognizable from how it is today. 500 from the junction with I-5 to the junction with 503 is a full fledged freeway now. There's so many more businesses than there used to be. It's unbelievable.
Hwy 99 through Hazel Dell would make me a happy child inside.
Well, the intersection at Fourth Plain and 117th certainly hasn’t changed.
Same traffic lights, still busy as hell.
Just wow! My town nine years before I was born.
All those traffic lights on 500.
Even back then, they caused bottlenecks.
Gher Road looks so foreign to me. No YMCA yet, no overpass, only the Burger King I recognize.
First thing I noticed is look how different the speeds of travel are now compared to then.
Oh man finally the one I've been waiting for! Coming up to the light at Gher Rd with the huge flag and BK brings back tons of childhood memories. However the whole section between Van Mall and Stapleton is like totally unrecognizable to me it's super trippy. Crazy how wide open and flat it is. Like driving through Texas.
Born and raised in Vancouver. Driving me crazy calling 5 and 205 as SR. Not Interstate.
Lors of memories though.
This really brings back some memories of when I lived in Portland. Thanks for posting!
Too bad the video doesn’t go all the way to Camas
This is crazy
Darn, it cuts off where I wanted to see it before the Safeway, and all the new businesses were in that area!
The person that filmed this (or someone), should film it now, 2024, and see how its changed!!
I really enjoyed this ❤
swinharts, todds albies y tavern all long gone!
I have a 1988 Lincoln town car!
Ooooo! A “talkie”!
Somebody tell this guy that he should keep right EXCEPT to pass
If you notice, the video says "INSIDE LANES", they were required to use the inside lane to capture photography and video facing that direction.
