I look at any video that has something to do with TLRs. I am an old guy, I started photography in 1969. My father bought me my first good quality adjustable camera which was a Yashica Matt 124. Of course, it was a twin lens reflex. My second TLR was a Rolleiflex F2.8 and eventually I bought a Mamiyaflex C220. One thing I like about the Mamiya is it was the only TLR that had adjustable lenses. Since I started out with a TLR I have a lot of good memories and love for the TLR camera design. Besides since my father died young, and since he bought me my first TLR camera, I guess that also gives me some memories about my father. He was very excited when I started getting into photography. Through the years I have photographed with many types of cameras 35mm, medium format, and 4x5 and 8x10 view cameras. I shoot digital now, but someday I may get me a TLR film camera. Lonnie, thank you for sharing! I wonder what happened to the TLRs you used to shoot on? Did they go missing? TLRs have been a very different shooting experience so far, one which I find very creatively stimulating :)
@@BelindaJiao I sold all of those TLRs. The Yashica Matt 124, my dad and me bought new in a drug store that had a photo department. It was bought new in 1971. At that time some photographers recommended shooting 120 film over 35mm if you were going to make your own prints in the darkroom. You could get a better quality print with a larger negative. Yes, I had my own darkroom. The other two TLRs I bought used. I have bought and sold many cameras in my life time. A couple of years ago I was shooting B&W 35mm film with a Nikon F2 and a Nikkormat FTN SLR with a variety of lenses. Today I only shoot digital. I have a Nikon D7200 with various lenses.
@@lonniepaulson7031 I agree with you about TLR cameras. I recently picked up a Mamiya C220 and have been having a ball shooting with it. I’ve been using film cameras since the mid 1970’s. Just like you, my dad bought me my first real camera, a Kalamar 660.
@@VintageInsightPhotography Yes, I had a Mamiyaflex C220 and had bought a 180mm f/4.5 lens with it. It was a great camera. I would guess that 180mm on 6x6cm format is similar to a 135mm lens on a 35mm camera. Anyway, the lens was great for portraits.

One of my favorite uses of my TLR is as a filter for my DSLR. It takes a tripod but you (remove the hood if you need to) and use a macro lens on your DSLR. Position the lens directly over your TLR on a tripod and focus both.
Just another way to use your vintage camera for cool shots.

I'm glad I stumbled on your channel Belinda, those were some great shots you took on your TLR and it was nice to see your developing process and a very realistic and humble digitizing process.
As a relatively new TLR owner/shooter myself, I can completely relate to the disorienting nature of seeing everything in reverse, but I think the benefits of shooting this format and this style of camera is that you definitely can get more curiousity and interactions with strangers. For some reason I found people are more likely to let you take a photo on a TLR than an SLR or rangefinder (strange?)

I use two tlr cameras. A Seagull 4bi and a Yashica Mat. I get my colour negatives developed at a lab,and then scan them with a Epson V500 scanner. For black and white, I develop my own film and print in my bathroom darkroom set up, where I have an old condenser enlarger with a 100mm f5.6 Schneider Componon S lens.
I love your photos. Waist level viewing helps with composition I find. I have been using Tlrs since I was 15 years old when I was a wedding photographer apprentice. That was in 1960. I am 76 now and still love using Tlrs.
I will give you a tip for moving subjects. Pre focus at waist level and then use the eyelevel finder. That's what we used to do back then
Neil, thank you for sharing this stuff with me - it is interesting how people from the digital age connect with those from the film age over TLRs 🤣 would you say it is feasible to build your own bathroom darkroom without creating too much inconvenience? and yes, its time that I utilise the eye level finder more often, it is a hidden feature that I tend to overlook
@@BelindaJiao my little bathroom has no window, so that's a good start. You will need to make a black out blind if you have a window.
I have an airing cupboard next to my bath so I store my enlarger on an old wooden wheeled food serving trolly which I can wheel into the bathroom when I need to print.
Advice. Get a good enlarger lens.
Durst Neonon is a good lens, not the Neotar. Schneider Componon S lenses are great, not the Componar which is cheaper but a bit rubbish to be honest.

I enjoyed that. I am rather fond of TLRs, especially baby TLRs using 127 roll film. Like everything, there are advantages and disadvantages. The two biggest advantages are perspective and semi-covert operation. The waist level finder allows one to shoot from very low angles, even looking up, or from above upside down (try that for mental gymnastics) - so over the heads of a crowd. Although the TLR is clearly visible, most subjects assume the photographer is not taking their picture unless the photographer is looking directly at them. TLRs also tend to be very quiet. Of course, they are not fast, so sports and wildlife are probably best as subjects for SLRs or rangefinders. They can also be bulky. The pre-war Rolleiflex's are much smaller than the post-war Japanese TLRs. The baby TLRs are much smaller still. Thanks for the video, subscription earned.
hello there, welcome to the channel. You know people have suggested shooting with a TLR upside down to me. What I found was that with my tiny hands it was rather impossible sadly 😅 also quite heavy to be lifted midair for a long time

I enjoyed your Video. I have used a TLR over the years and find a prism finder makes things much easier. I've got Mamiya C330s and many accessories are available for them. Their biggest strength for Street Photography is also their biggest weakness: The draw attention to the Photographer. If you are a Photographer who interacts well with people, then this will be a great advantage.

You did extremely well with your first roll on a TLR. I've been using them for more years than I care to remember, and it took me much longer to get the hang of it. PLUS you can load 120 film onto the reel in a changing bag! That's something I can't do. I need to do it in the darkroom.
By the way, did you know the reel will take 2 films? Simple shuffle the first into the middle, then load the second. Your developer will do twice as many films! 😁
Also, your Seagull is a very underrated camera. I hope you shoot many more films with it.

I've never quite seen any Seagulls around, and there are probably not many in the world given it was a Chinese manufacturer. It is surprising - how did you came to know this brand?

The Seagulls were quite popular in the 70s/80s. I still have one.
I've never successfully loaded 120 film in a changing bag. 35mm no problem.
The reels are designed to take a 220 film (discontinued) which is twice as long.
oh right 220 film is something I never had the chance to look into, though it leaves its marks on the film industry in subtle ways :) changing bags are a really great substitute if you don't have an entire room to spare
What about the quick action finder ?
I use myself a French branded TLR (Semflex standard) and I 3D printed a lens hood for it. Mandatory on these old lenses to limit the flare.
Hi Fork, I seldom use the sports finder when shooting moving subjects, as it doesn’t allow the entire composition to be viewed. Indeed, lens flare can be quite a lot on TLR lenses!

The TLR camera which you are using could be a "Shanghai" 1960 - 1964 model. That would make it the direct predecessor to the better known "Seagull" brand which was produced until the 1980s, in Shanghai. The Shanghai was probably only marketed domestically while the Seagull was also exported.
There´s information of a Shanghai camera museum dedicated to this brand. I would like to see a tour of that museum on youtube, maybe someone can provide a review!
For the Digitalise/Scanning part, what's your aperture setting in your DSLR?
Alexis, just checked, and my settings did vary a little bit based on how well-exposed the original negative is. But the constant is the f-stop - I always have it around f/10 just to make sure that the focus wouldn't be that prone to movements or curvatures since i do it hand-held; the shutter is around 1/200, a few stops above my slowest handheld speed, and for the ISO, I dial it up to the point where the shadows are sufficiently rendered through the negative.

I have the same Shanghai TLR as you. It is really a rare TLR model. I just dug it out of my dry cabinet a few days ago. It has been sitting inside for more than a decade. Hahaha .. I am thinking of using it to shoot again.

If you use the sports finder, assuming your TLR has one, the image is not reversed. Obviously you need to focus using the viewfinder though.
Printing in a darkroom, is very theraputic.

@@BelindaJiao You can't focus via the sports finder, they are all small, but they are handy for following a moving subject if you have camera pre-focussed, and the image is not reversed. I can print at home although I do not print that often.
Your videos have so much good information, on so many levels, I can only watch one at a time. Not sure how you edited, but you have to take care of your hands. Almost looks like you are developing an allergic dermatitis to the chemicals, or maybe it was the cold day, but regardless, you need to wear gloves! I finally gave in (powder free nitrile) and I hate to admit that it helps. If you can't do gloves, at least do your agitations in your sink under running water. I have a couple of AP tanks and they all leak a little, and you don't want developer or fixer sitting on your skin, especially since you seem sensitive. Sorry for the overly medical comment, but speaking from experience.
heya thank you!! you definitely have a sharp eye because yes I do suffer quite serious eczema, that's been the case since young and never managed to get rid of it. The tank did leak and the cold definitely made it worse.

@@BelindaJiao I am, but also someone who has mild eczema and developed contact dermatitis to formaldehyde (darkroom in the 80s/cadaver in the 90s). It pained me when I saw your hands, had to go back in the video since I hadn't noticed earlier. I got back into developing in 2019 and after a long session of C41 during lockdown, without gloves, my fingers to elbows were pretty bad for almost 2 months. I hate developing with gloves, but cannot deny they help alot. Cheers!

I have query regarding image quality & clearity
If i want to print my photographs in A2 or A1 size then what format i should pick between 6X4.5 & 6X6..?
Hi Abhijit, generally, a larger format will enable you to make larger prints with less of a stretch. Though you will have to experiment with prints, with these factors in mind:
- Larger prints are usually viewed further away, making details less of an emphasis
- Enlarger/ scanner used
- Amount of film grain
- Resolution of lenses used
- Skill level
These are just to name a few, so there is no definite answer to this. Though I'd say medium format would be a stretch for A1.

The thing is..
im bit confused between mamiya 645(SLR) & yashica 124G (TLR)
As they both come under same price bracket..😅
I can capture 3 more exposer's per role with mamiya 645 over 6X6 yashica..
I wanted to know if that 6X6 upgrade really worth it over 6X4.5 in terms of image quality If i decided to print my images on A1 size paper using epson 600 series printer..?

If I were you, I'd go for the 6x6, if you want to crop your images into a 645 you can also do so in post-production. In terms of quality, because A1 is such a stretch, there may not be a marked difference between the two. But in terms of general usability, I'd say 6x6 is more versatile.

@@BelindaJiao I try to alternate between 35 and 120. I enjoy the way the Rollei challenges me to slow down and visualize it more than even the 35.
Right now finishing a roll of 35. Then maybe back to the Rollei.
switching things up gives you more fun i agree. the larger the format the slower it feels :)
