  • LIES.TRAVEL.BLOGGERS.TELL. YUP! I said it. Fight me!
Since everyone is a travel blogger now. It's a fight for who can make travel look the best so more people follow them. Travel is amazing and I love that it's a part of my life but there are HUGE gaps in the information and the assumed lifestyles of travel bloggers. (Even some of the "successful ones"). So per usual, I decided to burst bubbles and share an unpopular opinion about the most omitted facts about traveling/travel blogging.
You mad? It's probably because you know I'm right.

Don't forget that travelling involves airports, waiting in lines, possible delays, long flights, layovers, luggage, exhaustion, jet lag, maybe even dehydration (dry air on the plane). Travelling can be tiring! I've realized that I love the idea of visiting many countries, but not the process.

I call the airport my second home. And yep, everything you said is true about the traveler life. I've been abroad off and on for the better part of the last three years. I have a photo blog but I have no interest in being a travel blogger because that's not how I want to remember my experiences.

Why I love Damon&Jo's travel vlog, they are proudly budget travellers and show all of it: the fatigue, their bickering, sleeping in train stations to save money etc. They honestly bring out the raw beauty of why I love to travel, the joy and the struggle.

I came to Spain to study abroad the day this video was published. I remember watching it and not being able to relate because I hadn't lived it yet. Now I'm watching it 8 months later and I found myself nodding and knowing exactly what you're talking about. I stay in budget hostels, traveling is so cheap in Europe it's crazy. I'm traveling 10 days straight for Semana Santa and I spent $200ish dollars on plane tickets whereas that wouldn't have been enough to get me from one coast to the other, back home. It's crazy how much you learn in a lengthy amount of time.

Thank you! My friend was a blogger for this "black" people travel site. She was lying all through that trip! I was very upset because I felt she was going to trick black people into a location where they would not be welcome or comfortable because of their skin. We has some racist things happen to us and she just shook it off as cultural differences. Ummm, it wasn't. It was racist behavior!

It's a choice whether or not to focus on the negative aspects of a trip. I have dealt with some racism while traveling in Europe, but it was nothing compared to what I deal with in the south, USA. I totally encourage blacks to visit any place they want to go. Somebody else's ignorance is not going to ruin my trip. I had some racist experiences while visiting Iceland and Sweden, but I still had an awesome time and met some cool locals. I would totally go back and visit again, even if some people may think that I'm "unwelcome" there.

The travel bloggers definitely don't tell the whole story about the parts that suck. Although having epiphanies while traveling isn't that far fetched. You can learn a lot while traveling like how small and insignificant your life and problems are and how big and magnificent the world is. This is such a beautiful lesson and it changed my life. How do you learn this without traveling

@@mode7scaling3 Thank you for being real and not being a superficial hyper consumer conformist like all these liars. And people who don't realize that the people working in these tourist areas are being exploited and the only reason their being nice to you is because you are a customer and they need you to pay their bills. Other than that living in a tourist area and working for these tourists is the worst. Anyone in a tourist country or tourist state knows this, trust me I worked at a Marriott hotel resort in myrtle beach for three years and the guest were the absolute worst because they think just because they pay money they have the right to disrespect you and act super privileged. Another thing people fail to realize is that tourism in a lot of these countries is not something the natives want, but because of colonization these countries that are war torn or coming off of hundreds of years of slavery the tourist industry takes advantage of that; which is another after affect of colonization. That's why I tell people before you travel aboard travel in your own back yard because most people that wan to go abroad because of superficial reasons haven't even been to five states in their own country. #Getout thesystemandfuckcapitalism

Haha love this! As a travel blogger, i can relate to some of your points. It is the reason why I'd rather concentrate on the blog than give in to the pressure of posting a lot of social media updates. Sometimes when i am on a press trip, most of my fellow bloggers tend to just take pictures and keep clicking for the 'perfect shot' or perfect happy video update than enjoy the moment by swimming or doing the activities. They end up taking my pics and vids because by the time they're done our time is up or they're too tired or hungry to do the activity. I also don't want to feel pressured to post purely travel posts on my IG when i am also interested in other stuff like fangirling and novel writing/reading. Cheers!

    Somewhere Always,
You hit the nail on the head on so many accounts. I am a travel blogger with my family. Admittedly the best things we do often are never caught on film. I have entire trips we take that are never recorded because we are having too much fun doing them.
It is also strange how a vacation can completely suck, and yet when you make the video it makes it look like you were in heaven. We went to New Orleans recently, an amazing city but admittedly half the places we went to smelt so bad we could hardly breath. It was hot and humid, being the the west we weren't use to that kind of temperatures and on top of that I got a migraine.
After the trip I showed my husband the video and he was like "woah, it looked like we actually had a good time."
Mind you New Orleans is an awesome place, but for us it was a bad vacation.
What you said about being broke is also true. We are not broke, but we are just an average family. We simply prioritize travel more than anything else so we are able to do it at least once a month. When we go on vacation we spend almost nothing only splurging on the occasional cool experience.
We love traveling 80% is awesome but 20% is hell. Especially since we do it with our two children under the age of 3. Totally worth it and we would live no other way. It just has its roller coasters like everything else.
Dang this was too long of a comment. Love your channel. I made sure to subscribe. Curious of what other insights you have to share in the future.

I had no clue how to do anything and just standing there confused at the airport. I didn't even last the whole year I was suppose to stay because it was just too much. Chasing someone else's dream shouldn't have been my purpose. I took another shot and traveled to China with my own purpose and it ended up being a difficult, interesting, insane, cringe worthy, but wonderful experience now that I look back. TBH the 'bad' part of the trips often become some of my favourite moments. And the stuff that are struggles always become some of my favourite stories to tell people and I don't know why more bloggers don't tell those parts. Various cases of food poisoning, flooding a hotel toilet, losing an expensive camera equipment in taxi, getting lost at night with creepy guy trying to take you back to a hotel, tour which turn into a massive budget breaking tourist trap..all 'bad' experiences that just become stories to tell.

I’ve like.... actually had deep instagram girl moments where traveling gives me a different perspective and I have some pretty deep ideas and healing, but I think that’s because I make it a practice to meditate and I’m a very spiritual person. That’s the only one that I feel like half the people are BSing but like... some of it is very very real. I recently got an RV to live and travel in so hopefully that will give me somewhat of a sense of home.

I agree with the points articulated in this video and also encourage people not to be suckered in by what can seem like a very simplistic and carefree lifestyle as promoted by the vloggers.
But I'm glad that the video doesn't detract from the genuine beauty of travel. For the good and bad experiences, the stories, the human interactions, the sights, the lessons it can offer you.
Once you acknowledge the reality of travel/tourism you can get the best out of it. Vlogging is a business, it's important to remember that.

People talk about being "real" on social media, but I have never seen or heard anything more real than this, and your point about feeling "Home" I actually studied Transnationalism in uni, and that feeling is a huge topic, especially for immigrants, who set up a new life in a new country, but then never feel like they belong there, and then when they go back to their origin country, there is also a sense of not belonging because they left. That feeling of belonging, and sense of "home" is a huge part of the human condition, and it is literally ignored in ALL of social media, as if all that matters is the glamour of travelling, when I'm sure literally everyone feels this at some point. Amazing video!

Sarah Lacasse thanks girl! I REALLY try to be as honest as possible. Especially where feelings are concerned. I’ve dealt with some crazy emotions on this travel/life abroad rollercoaster. I’ve seen people leave countries suddenly because depression is crushing. I just try to be as honest as I can, good or bad.

Isn’t everything you said just a part a life tho? Like even if you stay and live in one country and don’t travel you feel the same way to that’s just the way we are. Some ppl travel and they actually do feel different in other countries or they actually do feel like home in another country and they love and stay living in the other country because for them it finally feels like home. Maybe you just haven’t found that place where you feel like you belong there. Also everyone struggles in life at least your traveling and gaining experience and seeing the world as it is and and also having fun. While there’s other ppl who struggle everyday and never get out of their country. Also do you really think travel vloggers are going to show you the bad side of traveling of course not everyone knows about the bad side of traveling that’s why a lot of ppl don’t travel. This is the travel vloggers brand, this is what they do for a living how, just think. You didn’t say nothing new in this video. Of course travel vlogging isn’t for everyone but sometimes it makes them afford their travels to ppl who actually love traveling. Also I’m sorry to tell you but sometimes a location is so beautiful or the way a certain place just the feel of the place does make you think and you do kind of get a epiphany. Just try enjoying it all and forget all the negative theirs negativity in everything.

Been in different country , or city ... far away for what u used too ... thats the call for magic to happen. in some point i like the way she bring that aspect. lets people know isnt all pink and perfect. but after watching the whole video seem like she didnt like to travel at all.. or get disapointed.

Maybe your travel blog should showcase the realness of travel blogging and travel. :) I think more people would like to see the truth but show how it's okay to live in your truth (for lack of better words).

Thank you so much for opening up this conversation! Scott and I travel, but it is locally; usually not more than 200 miles from where we live. We have bills that have to be paid, medical that has to be dealt with, and family that needs us. Because of this we are tied down to one place. This isn't a bad thing, but it doesn't enable us to go for that long distance, around the world type of travel. Money, so glad you brought that up too! We are definitely not rich! The trips we take are limited to what we have saved up over a few paychecks and even then we are counting our expenses. Because hotels are so expensive, we have developed a way to camp in our SUV and with hammocks. So glamorous.
I must say, I'm a little jealous that you are getting to go overseas. You go! Keep counting those $$$ and live well.
    Thanks again.

Girl! I consign all of this. All. Especially the part about wanting to enjoy the experience and not focus on the camera. Some of the best moments are so random that you don't even have time to catch it, like when a Chinese taxi driver tried to teach me a Chinese pop song. Who's gonna stop him so I can get it on tape? And the pinching pennies and eating slim lunches all year so you can travel in summer...and the fact that you really don't belong anywhere and the only other people who understand this are expats and other long term travellers....I am def. sharing your video✊🏿✊🏿

I absolutely agree with you. You're the first blogger that I have found and has said the truth. At least a big part of reality that none wants to confess. I am from Spain, we are preparing a trip from Spain to India via Trans siberian train and I am looking for vlog format ideas and I have decided to tell the absolute truth about the trip. This is spot on. There are a few travel vloggers I follow, and they typically tend to be the ones travelling to countries with negative perceptions to show their experiences with the locals (those I respect). As far as most other vloggers, they just seems like braggarts looking to use travel to inflate their own egos.

Chica! Exactamente! A disadvantage of being a nomad is that you start getting separated from your home culture and you'll probably never feel fully akin to people you've met in the different cultures you've lived. I know when I go back home, it will take a while to reassimilate to my Jcan home.

This was the realist video Ive ever seen. I've been living abroad in the Czech Republic for for a year and a half now, and it does absolutely suck some of the time. Being a foreigner sucks, not not being able to communicate with landlords sucks, being taken advantage of sucks, missing home sucks, views not being understood sucks, not knowing where to go to buy not so common items sucks (the drain in my broke, for example, where the hell do you get one of those, especially without knowing the language well?). Don't get me wrong, it is all totally worth it. I wouldn't trade my time here for anything. But there ARE times that I just want to go home, but where is home, anyway?
