- Clara Schumann (Clara Josephine Wieck; 13 September 1819 - 20 May 1896) was a German musician and composer, considered one of the most distinguished composers and pianists of the Romantic era. She exerted her influence over a 61-year concert career, changing the format and repertoire of the piano recital, while also having composed a body of work including various piano concertos, chamber works, and choral pieces. She was married to composer Robert Schumann, and together they encouraged and maintained a close relationship with Johannes Brahms. She was the first to perform publicly any work by Brahms, notably the Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel. She was also an influential piano educator at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt.

Franz Lizt recognized her as an equal without complexes. Chopin and others labeled her the best painist o her generation in times where machism were far worst than anybody could imagine.
ooooo
@@richardwagner3682 No one can deny, your work is the pinnacle of it all. Only Mahler can compete with you (which would be anachronistic).
@@Archiekunst It is only music not man or woman which is the very seed
There's no such thing as equality. It's a myth and fiction. Nothing in nature is equal. The obsession with equality is a modern mental disorder and delusion and without basis. Moreover, if something is true it doesn't need to be repeated endlessly. Only lies need to be repeated endlessly. Think about it.
If she was that great, where are her hit masterpieces that are timeless and that everyone knows?
I don't want her nocturne to ever end. 4:00 to 5:20 is some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard.
Agree 100% I love Clara Shumann since childhood. An amazing woman....I wonder what one could turn into if Clara Shumann is one 's mom...Imagine growing with such a pianist & out of this world composer....
What does nocturne mean?
The best classical music. Very deep, rich yet clear expressions.
Absolutely amazing! I'm so happy to be listening to her now and I think her pieces should be played more often 😍
Wow! I love that way to play, to compose....Is my new favorite composer/player. Thanks to share this. We should re-discover the femenine composers of classical music. It's simply amazing.
Why is it when a woman does something great or special the focus is the fact they're a woman?
@@thomasjohnston8970 Note that Schumann is from the early 19th century. In the past, women were not allowed the luxury of pursuing their dreams without being strongly oppressed, often being left without a choice, much like Nannerl Mozart. Having accomplished so much with society completely against you should be acknowledged.
@@thomasjohnston8970 she gave birth to 8 children. women did not have time for themselves like men do in that time. people didnt care women's hobbies or interests. they treated women as if women were not individuals. even more they used to refuse to read a book just bcoz it was written by a woman. women used to publish their books by a made up man name. thats why it makes it more special. bcoz even in an enviroment like that she was able to produce something timeless like this one. despite being at a disadvantage she managed to do so.
Today I was searching for the best female composers in the world and found her..!
After overcoming all the odds of male dominated music industry, she made it!---- I am PROUD of her..! (^_^)
same i searched 4 famous woman composers and she came up so now im doing a project on her
What do u mean equality is a lie? Women deserve the same rights as men.
if u cant handle the privilege of being appropriate on the internet, then just dont go on it. people dont need ur negitivity. and im sure your older than me, but if someone says something like this, i cant help. u should now more than me, but i guess u dont.
Just like the races are not equal neither are men and women. Science!
God, there's something rlly wrong with you.
Pristine, Majestic & Eloquent piano composition and performance! Brilliant!
Her music has a pace, her way of breathing in playing, that I understand: the kind that is generous towards an audience and a player, that makes the most out of the moment, that has it's moments too. I was always curious about her work and have enjoyed hearing it. Thank you for posting it....
Wow! Very WILD...that is very unbelievable! With such power and invincible heart inClara's music! I love it! Also so beautiful-an amazing combining of masculinity and femininity
Gewoon prachtig "awesome" bedankt dat er jou iemand na al die jaren terug tot LEVEN heeft gebracht - dit is genieten in de pure zin dankjewel
Beautiful. She was Robert Schumann,s wife. She was beautiful, talented, good at piano. They had 5 children. Brahms liked her very much. He never got married at end, Schumann jumped into Rhine Holy River in German in the winter! Schumann was famous for music composer & critics!3 of them all were music genius. Quite a story! Mami taught me that!
She and Robert had 8 children, 7 of whom lived to be adults. Two died early of tuberculosis, one died insane, one was a drug addict and died early as a result.
Gone from this world but lives in her music
so beautiful ! thanks .
Listen to that implies a regression, acceptance of an abandonment of critical sense and a letting go to resonate with expression of human passions. A moving and sensual music, it will always remain opened to the sicks of heart
so good. love it so much.😊
Clara and Robert are both great musicians and their works are great
Beautiful
Thank u.

Always was curious about her music, nice to finally hear it. She was pretty too, no wonder Schumann married her, what's not to like? Talented and she loved him! I still like his music a lot though!
How can one smile for a painter though? They take forever to paint ya.
unfortunately it was have been better for her not to marry him.... lost concentration and a lot of time and energy, that's sure.....fortunately she was very strong !
mimi, she devoted her life to her husband and children. she played robert's pieces all over europe and gteatly increased his popularity.
thanks for sharing this-must have been so painful living with a husband with psychotic episodes. But marriage is fate
what a great composer!
Great to feel the 19th century's world by the music of a woman
she is fantastic
Her compostion was not her most celebrated part of her life. Her compositions may not be the most celebrated repertoire but her compositions are a great value for hundreds of men and women who dared to dedicate them selfs to play piano.
Rockin' Clara!!!!! She deserves more than a foot note in musical history than as the talented woman married to crazy and talented composer.

I read about Clara's pianist talent and she plays beautifully
She isn't playing (she died in 1896), but yes she was very very talented
her story is far more complicated. Her father never approved of her marriage to Robert. Clara achieved wide fame and support with many adoring fans and muscians - she was the love of Brahm's life. Robert injured his hand and could no longer play which fueled his anger and despair along with the feelings of his father in-law. He focused on composing and was adored by so many other composers, his works remain among the best of all classical music - he developed syphilis which eventually killed him in an institution - so many things gong on but the reality was that Clara was famous beyond him while he was alive - she never remarried - Brahms final works - the breathtalkingly beautiful Intermezzios are dedicated to her as is R Schumanns Nocturn written while he was still lucid, one of his last pieces. - I suspect it may have been her that could not get out from under his shadow after his death because of his music - they need to make a current movie of their lives - the last one was with Katherine Hepburn and not very good. There is a second whose name escapes me.
Do you think Katherine was actually playing the piano in that film? It looked like she was.
he probably didnt die from the syphilis, but from the way they treated it.
@@isadorasalo neurosyphilis is fatal, but I agree the mercury he was most likely given hasted his death

I want to play every piece.
you must be a great pianist! Greetings from Melb
Köszönöm ezt a csodálatot
She already toured Europe at age ELEVEN.
Sweet
I love Schumanns a lot
Could you include the starting times for each piece in the description? Thanks
I'm very, very jealous yet admiring of Robert Schumann.
I love clara schumann
she should be famous, maybe if her name had been Clark....
snoopf fer She was famous in her lifetime, in some circles even more so than her husband.
She's a famous composer, even if you didn't know her
She would be more famous if she was a pop musician.
Maybe you would be more likable if everything wasn’t about identitarianism

name of pianist please. most gratifying. such musical clairvoyance (componistin & klavier spieler(in?). thanks for these gems
girl power!
@@richardwagner3682 It's only you who see this
If a man did it should I say man power 🙄
I see no guy saying like that when it comes to male composers, whenever there's a woman they always say "girl power" It is not girl power nor boy power, it is brain power.
I'm a girl too, where's my girl power? This is serious work and the power of passion. power of human. Don't stereotype people. Everyone is special and unique.
Genial
Schumann, Liszt and Chopin got it right about this lady. Her music is gentle, magical and very refreshing. Why didn't they do a George Sands for her, name her Carl Weiss, say he was reclusive, and publish it for her under that name, then have her perform it publicly. Not great at lateral thinking, those incredible geniuses!! Cathy
Huh? Why would "they" want to conceal her identity? And HOW would they do it? By the time she entered her teens, she was a famous pianist whose compositions were published by major publishers like Hoffmeister and Breitkoff & Härtel. So obviously there was a market for music by Clara Wieck, and later Clara Schumann.
And the thought of "they" having Clara do anything is funny. She understood business better than Chopin and Schumann (while Robert was alive she ran his life and business matters while raising their eight children) and would hardly have taken direction from Liszt, with whom she was on friendly terms but whose music she didn't much respect. She wrote in her diary in May 1854, “Liszt sent Robert today a sonata [the B minor sonata] dedicated to him and several other things with a friendly letter to me. But the things are dreadful! Brahms played them for me, but they made me utterly wretched…. This is nothing but sheer racket - not a single healthy idea, everything confused, no longer a clear harmonic sequence to be detected there! And now I still have to thank him - it’s really awful.”
If im not mistaken during her lifetime she was more famous than her husband.
@@1tbo I think she might have sold more and had to be on the road less, with all those kids to provide for at home.
@@mr.x4001 Possible because she lived a lot longer than he did and continued performing as well. I really like her music but I think Robert had the edge and excitement she lacks
6:45 mazurka in g minor IS really nice

She was the # 1female pianist in the world. She could use 2hands& cross them to play & better than
Franz Listz . Both Schuman & Brahms would die for her! At end, Schumann jumped into The Holy German River Rhine River in the snowy water!
She had 5 kids, B. Played with them around their yard. They played seek & hide. B. wore the black cloth mask, chasin

Eight children not five!!
I think not better than Liszt.
I just wanted quickly to hear how she sounded, maybe go check out some other videos scattered around CZcams... aaand it's been over an hour.
Wonderful choice of Clara Schumann's works! But why was the name of the pianist not mentioned? I fully realize one of the earlier comments gives the pianist's name, but it would be great if the information given above were to be edited to credit the performers. The cellist for the 2nd movement of the Piano Concerto should also be added since this unusually constructed concerto movement is basically a piano/cello duo. Please identify the orchestra as well.
I can't find the name of the pianist. Where is it? Thank you!
Damn, she is gorgeous.

Some said her music talent is way beyond her husband.
Is that a joke?
Do you mean as pianist or composer? Because as a pianist, Clara was much more talented as her husband (she was an enfant prodige)
@@chiaracorrado8172 maybe the greatest child piano prodigy ever. Maybe Kissen was her equal.
who is performing on the piano here?
Beautiful music. Please let us know who the pianist is! I agree with someone else here: the Nocturn in F is splendid!
+Sammy Savage Probably not since she died in 1896 and the recording seem to be clearer than what they would be capable of then. The pianist is Jozef De Beenhouwer.
+Sammy Savage LMAO
Who is the pianist?
This woman was not only famous for his husband. This woman went to court in order to have legal authorization to marry His beloved Robert. This woman fell in love with the right man y made Robert Schuman fell in love with her. She had several with him. The great premiere o Robert Schuman's piano Concerto must have been something to be seen with Clara at the piano. This woman got famous because of his husband because his husband become famous because of her, this is a love story of three a man, a woman and music.

I wish people would leave out politics from literally every single thing that exists besides politics. Clara and Robert were both exceptional composers, just leave it at that. Do not come to the comments to rant about the fairness of a time period that has already passed because it is finished. It's done. Stop giving a shit about a life that you are outliving, because these people are *literally* dead, and the only way to hear the remains of their mind is through their music, so why slander that with ideologies of feminism or republicanism (etc.)? Just give it a rest, for gods sake. Who gives a shit about who's more famous than the other, or who was a better pianist. None of that really matters but to satisfy your inner beliefs or virtues, so just *shut the fuck up* and enjoy the fucking music, istg.
No wonder Schumann fell in love with her. She is so pretty!
So where are the best ofs of all the other female composers? =)

Wey hey! I never knew lady musicians could be so talented ! Clara creates music freely and is thought to be better than schumann. Interesting......
she was far better than her husband
+Claire Bryan oh snap! someone said it!
Claire Bryan fuck wright for woman
they were both good
you must mean she was a far better pianist than her husband as only a person totally ignorant of robert schumann's compositions would ever claim that clara was a better composer. clara would be aghast at such a claim.
Your opinion isn't fact. You're entitled to like Clara better. They were both trained and educated at the highest levels of Romantic Classical music, and they were both genius as concert pianists and composers (remember Robert was destined to be a great pianist like Clara until he hurt his hand). Clara's teaching created a generation of superior pianists and composers. So did Robert. However, whether it's sexist or not, the impact of Robert's compositions on the world has been far greater. That's the facts. As I read her history, I'm sadden to think she was so lonely, and hated Liszt. Liszt is one of my heroes, but I laughed when I read what she said about Wager and totally agree! He was an ass! And I've never liked his operas, looooonnnnnngggggg and boring (with the exception of the overture to The Flying Dutchman, and Brunhilda, who couldn't like Brun with her special breast plate! lol). Again, my opinion, but it agrees with Clara's.
Wow.
She is the equal of her husband.
wingetsu I was just thinking the same thing too. I much prefer her piano pieces to Mr. Schumann's.
i can't imagine how she did.....we are lost today when we have 2.....and her husband was mad at the end....
7 kids I think--concertzing--2000 concerts, sick husband, only bread winner when he died...unbelievable strength.
please, are you people musical at all?? almost no one is the equal of robert, and to suggest such a thing is completely laughable!!
Well crafted but she should have smiled more.
That's sad she was famous only because of her husband.
she gave 2000 concerts in her lifetime--and was, in many circles, more highly thought of than her husband--atleast then, of course.
she was viewed as one of the greatest pianists of her century and the inspiration of much of schumann's and brahms's music. truly an extraordinary woman.
Not at all! Clara Wiek was very famous at that time, she was a great pianist. She had bright future ahead but she chose Robert that was why her father was so extremely disappointed and against them
that was the reality of the society she lived in...
she is nice
but then who cares when a womqan loves music more than herself
imagine marrying a piano
Clara the robot was a pain all her life and killed Schumann flame and creativity.
How come women are good at playing music on the violin or piano, which Asian women excel at, but not at composing music?
I love her hubby Robert Schumann much better than her even she was so talented in her time. I do not know yay!?
Beautiful
