  • Clara Schumann (Clara Josephine Wieck; 13 September 1819 - 20 May 1896) was a German musician and composer, considered one of the most distinguished composers and pianists of the Romantic era. She exerted her influence over a 61-year concert career, changing the format and repertoire of the piano recital, while also having composed a body of work including various piano concertos, chamber works, and choral pieces. She was married to composer Robert Schumann, and together they encouraged and maintained a close relationship with Johannes Brahms. She was the first to perform publicly any work by Brahms, notably the Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel. She was also an influential piano educator at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt.

    I came her because i named my daughter Clara after Clara Schumann.
    She was printed on german 100 Mark note and i loved the name and the music since i was a child and saw her printed on a towel i still use today.
    Strange story, but true.

      There's no such thing as equality. It's a myth and fiction. Nothing in nature is equal. The obsession with equality is a modern mental disorder and delusion and without basis.

    her story is far more complicated. Her father never approved of her marriage to Robert. Clara achieved wide fame and support with many adoring fans and muscians - she was the love of Brahm's life. Robert injured his hand and could no longer play which fueled his anger and despair along with the feelings of his father in-law. He focused on composing and was adored by so many other composers, his works remain among the best of all classical music - he developed syphilis which eventually killed him in an institution - so many things gong on but the reality was that Clara was famous beyond him while he was alive - she never remarried - Brahms final works - the breathtalkingly beautiful Intermezzios are dedicated to her as is R Schumanns Nocturn written while he was still lucid, one of his last pieces. - I suspect it may have been her that could not get out from under his shadow after his death because of his music - they need to make a current movie of their lives - the last one was with Katherine Hepburn and not very good. There is a second whose name escapes me.

      Huh? Why would "they" want to conceal her identity? And HOW would they do it? By the time she entered her teens, she was a famous pianist whose compositions were published by major publishers like Hoffmeister and Breitkoff & Härtel. So obviously there was a market for music by Clara Wieck, and later Clara Schumann.
      And the thought of "they" having Clara do anything is funny. She understood business better than Chopin and Schumann (while Robert was alive she ran his life and business matters while raising their eight children) and would hardly have taken direction from Liszt, with whom she was on friendly terms but whose music she didn't much respect. She wrote in her diary in May 1854, “Liszt sent Robert today a sonata [the B minor sonata] dedicated to him and several other things with a friendly letter to me. But the things are dreadful! Brahms played them for me, but they made me utterly wretched…. This is nothing but sheer racket - not a single healthy idea, everything confused, no longer a clear harmonic sequence to be detected there! And now I still have to thank him - it’s really awful.”

I fully realize one of the earlier comments gives the pianist's name, but it would be great if the information given above were to be edited to credit the performers. The cellist for the 2nd movement of the Piano Concerto should also be added since this unusually constructed concerto movement is basically a piano/cello duo. Please identify the orchestra as well.

    This woman was not only famous for his husband. This woman went to court in order to have legal authorization to marry His beloved Robert. This woman fell in love with the right man y made Robert Schuman fell in love with her. She had several with him. The great premiere o Robert Schuman's piano Concerto must have been something to be seen with Clara at the piano. This woman got famous because of his husband because his husband become famous because of her, this is a love story of three a man, a woman and music.

    I wish people would leave out politics from literally every single thing that exists besides politics. Clara and Robert were both exceptional composers, just leave it at that. Do not come to the comments to rant about the fairness of a time period that has already passed because it is finished. It's done. Stop giving a shit about a life that you are outliving, because these people are *literally* dead, and the only way to hear the remains of their mind is through their music, so why slander that with ideologies of feminism or republicanism (etc.)? Just give it a rest, for gods sake. Who gives a shit about who's more famous than the other, or who was a better pianist. None of that really matters but to satisfy your inner beliefs or virtues, so just *shut the fuck up* and enjoy the fucking music, istg.

    • @mikekarren5010
      @mikekarren5010 Před 7 lety +3

      Your opinion isn't fact. You're entitled to like Clara better. They were both trained and educated at the highest levels of Romantic Classical music, and they were both genius as concert pianists and composers (remember Robert was destined to be a great pianist like Clara until he hurt his hand). Clara's teaching created a generation of superior pianists and composers. So did Robert. However, whether it's sexist or not, the impact of Robert's compositions on the world has been far greater. That's the facts. As I read her history, I'm sadden to think she was so lonely, and hated Liszt. Liszt is one of my heroes, but I laughed when I read what she said about Wager and totally agree! He was an ass! And I've never liked his operas, looooonnnnnngggggg and boring (with the exception of the overture to The Flying Dutchman, and Brunhilda, who couldn't like Brun with her special breast plate! lol). Again, my opinion, but it agrees with Clara's.
