It's funny to think that the quiz show the FT reviewer is talking about, is STILL on the air 40 years later! ;D

Thx!!! What was N1500 and N1700 a nice clear format. Betamax and VHS were a real step down after that. I do really think the resolutions is about 300-340 lines, while first generation VHS and Betamax is at leas 50-80 lines less.. But the tape were very expensive for 60 or 120 minutes, probably 30 pounds a piece. It was more than 100 guilders in the Netherlands.
And your 50fps de-interlaced scan is also stunning.Thx again.

Thank you. Yes, a good N1500/1700 recording is hard to beat!

The sound quality is better than VHS Beta and V2000 linear mono.

14:28 - I suspect this was caused by some sort of automatic detection of blank visuals; if a report's pictures ended or went missing, vision was mixed automatically back to one of the presenters. Channel 4's launch had several seconds of a blank screen while the drum roll built up, and I guess no-one realised this would trigger that automatic switch!

Channel 4 from the start had technical problem as their were several minutes of blank screen, behind the scene i think the tv controllers were having technical problem flicking the switch, Come on you Bastard work!!

This might have been the very start of the new title sequence

It definitely looks different -- the zoom in on the clock face is done by having it "swoop" into the screen with some sort of video effect. The other intros of this type of seen simply cut directly from the flyover footage of London to the clocktower zoom in.

The FT guy's claim that Brookside was just like the other soaps (at that time - Crossroads, Emmerdale Farm, Corrie) makes me wonder if he just barely ever watched any of them. Brookside was markedly different, even moreso early on due to having profanity.

Poor to think he can watch the very first episode of a show and be so definitively judgemental on air without giving time for the show’s nuances to kick in.

4:06 Portable? Yes, but you'd to have arms like the TV's Jack Reacher to carry one! 🤭🤣

Great how idents in general but the Thames one in particular would be heralded a few seconds before actually being played. Listen carefully from ~39:15 for a great example of the type!

What's going on here is a phenomenon unique to magnetic tape storage. Over time, a strong signal on one piece of tape bleeds over onto empty/blank sections of tape that are lain against it. So several loops of silent tape, which were wound next to the parts with the nice loud idents on, have picked up the sound of the idents, over the course of many years of storage (or possibly when the tape was moving - I don't know what actually causes this effect). Suffice it to say, at the time of broadcast there was no such audible heralding of the sound on air - that is, unless the idents were being played out from tapes where the same effect was also happening, I suppose!

Abortion is tantamount to legalised murder. People shouldn't get their trousers down if they're too keen on the end result.
