"Mary In The Morning", written by Michael Rashkow and Johnny Cymbal, was the final song recorded by Elvis on the second day of his five day, June 1970 "Nashville Marathon" at RCA's studio B. The final master was achieved in just five takes, of which only two, including the master itself, were completed versions. Due to the nature of Elvis' recordings taking place late at night, the master was actually recorded around four am on Saturday 6 June, but as the session began late on the night of the 5th, this is the official recording date.
The orchestral overdubs, arranged by Norman Putnam and David Briggs, were added in the afternoon of 20 July 1970, at RCA's Studio A, also in Nashville, and overseen by Felton Jarvis and engineer Al Pachucki. The original studio band on 5 June, comprised of Elvis, James Burton, Chip Young and Charlie Hodge on guitars, Jerry Carrigan on drums, David Briggs on piano, Norman Putnam on bass and Charlie McCoy on organ and harmonica. The orchestra on 20 July however, comprised of eight violins, two violas, two cellos, three trumpets, four trombones, a French Horn, and a percussionist together with David Briggs on the organ. Vocal overdubs were added on 1 October
"Mary In The Morning" was released on the "B" side of Elvis' 1970 album "That's The Way It Is", and of the twelve tracks on the album, it was one of only two not to be performed live on stage by Elvis whilst making the movie of the same name, although all songs at least have some sort of segment within the movie. Unlike the other track, "How The Webb Was Woven", this song was at least given serious consideration about being added to the set list, as it was given this full stage rehearsal, and a heavily edited version of this can be seen in the movie.
The amazing part about this is that Elvis doesn't miss a beat in-between joking around with his crew in the audience. And, his sound is just as great as always.
The studio version is longer. He also sings about Mary in the evening.
This video of Elvis having fun around the studio shows the difference between Elvis and MJ. Elvis stayed humble and grounded and aloud a lot of fund. Before getting down to some serious Work.
Wait till you see the actual live version from the concert part of the film elvis that's the way it is 😂
Rehearsal
He really was a walking “ dad joke” at times. Oh, Elvis. 💕
This is just a bit of the song. I bet you are going to hear the studio version soon. Be sure to hear it! :)
One of his best. There is a longer version of this rehearsal. Love watching him having fun with everyone and laughing. Don't be too serious, enjoy the man and his sense of humor and his character of the man. The true version of this he says Mary in the morning, evening and summertime. Lol I love that he's messing around yet doesn't skip a beat with that velvety voice! He's so beautiful. It's a white towel around him. ❤❤
Elvis being Elvis having fun but then getting back to business during reversal for opening in Vegas. Love him. ❤
You need to listen to the whole beautiful song.

The white weights around Elvis wrists are so he can get the feel of the suits he wears on stage. Some of them are around 80 lbs. The suit worn in the Aloha from Hawaii was made with semi-precious stones and weighed about 100 lb. another 35lbs for the cape
"Get up in the morning, feeling mighty weak..." - I Gotta Know
Love, love, love the rehearsal sessions. This is where to see the real Elvis and the singing is every bit as good as the shows. It's a towel around the neck, but he wears scarves during concerts and throws them to the audience.
Its just a rehearsal but its still wonderful. The studio version is, of course, even lovelier. ❤
Beautiful, there is a longer version of him rehearsing this song, but don't think he actually sang it live in the actual concert, if he did ive never seen it xxx
Right: Paused at 7:50 to give you the full lyrics to "Mary In The Morning":
Nothing's quite as pretty as Mary in the morning
When through the sleepy haze I see her lying there
Soft as the rain that falls on summer flowers
Warm as the sunlight shining on her golden hair
When I awake and see her there so close beside me
I want to take her in my arms
The ache is there so deep inside me
Nothing's quite as pretty as Mary in the morning
Chasing the rainbow in her dreams so far away
And when she turns to touch me I kiss her face so softly
And then my Mary wakes to love and love again
And Mary's there in summer days or stormy weather
She doesn't care, 'cause right or wrong the love we share
We share together
Nothing's quite as pretty as Mary in the evening
Kissed by the shade of night and starlight in her hair
And as we walk, I hold her close beside me
All our tomorrows for a lifetime we will share
More info to come! Just thought I'd provide the lyrics here 😀👍
Also: Real quick: My interpretation: Mary is sleeping and when he is waking up and does not wake her even though the ache is there to stay with her and gather her in his arms.
Elvis in rehearsal love it . Beautiful song Elvis lovely velvet voice good one Seph 💕
I stood next to Elvis's red shirt and trousers at the Elvis exhibition at London was in tears thinking of him in these rehearsals and that beautiful voice is heaven even though its a rehearsal ❤
This is beautiful and don't miss the beautiful high voice of his backup singer. He practiced every day and when he performed in concert they could turn on a dime. They were so close to him, they knew his every move. Don't miss the interview years later for his "Elvis Presley's favorite Backup Singer", Estelle Brown. Thanks Seph I love rehearsal stuff he's just so cute and funny. Thanks
I love seeing him having fun! Then he can switch it up on a dime and get down to business. They were getting ready for the big opening night! I’m sure the nerves were kicking in!
I just love this song and this incredible man...
Listen to the studio version on the "That's The Way It Is" album. It's at least a double banger!!
I think that only his microphone was connected to the recording equipment during that session
The bands around his wrists are weights so he gets a little work out in rehearsals
Elvis sings this romantic ballad with a perfect balance of warmth, tenderness & intensity. One of his best love songs IMO
Thank you for this Seph & looking forward to your reaction to the studio version up the track 👍😊❤
I love seeing him having fun during rehearsals, but just as quickly he can get down to business singing this beautiful song. I swear he sings just as well in rehearsal as he does for real. You have to hear the whole song though, this is just a portion of it- it’s a great song!
- - - check out the soundtrack to the documentary this came from
1970 Elvis That's The Way It Is concert film. His absolute best footage.
No no no. This is one of his best songs but badly recorded here. You really should react to the studio version or you are doing yourself a major injustice my friend 🔥🔥🔥
If you go to the Arches in London to the Elvis Exhibition you will see this shirt and belt a fantastic visit
I have seen it at Graceland it's beautiful and you can see all the snags and wear ❤
@@monicacoman5424 Totally agree he certainly knew how to dress
Seth your starting to see what wear on about the film elvis that's the way it is, and by the way there's a actual live version of this song in the concert part of the film and it's even better 👌
Beautiful song one of my ultimate favourites !!
This is just rehearsal for Mary In the The Morning ...There's a professional recording of this song that Elvis did.
Beautiful. Elvis live is heaven. Seems like the masters of the music universe threw some obstacles your way. THANK YOU for keeping on!
3rd comment: I am so sorry Seph 🙏 Forgot to say BANGER reaction 💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣
Gold stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Thank you as always for sharing 🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹
Rock on 🎶🎸🎶 & carry on 💖💖💖💖
"He doesn't want to disturb her. And that's why he's aching so much. 'I can't wait until you wake because I want to give you a big hug and lots of other things.'" (9:57) Very funny!
haha I brain goes there xD
Another one off the album Thats The Way It Is - studio version is just epic . Never did sing it live in concert. Believe this version is edited and there is a longer version out there, though never officially released
That’s a towel. You’re watching the rehearsal
This is the short version of this rehersal, there is a longer version where he does sing the full song with a little audio added in but you must hear the full song, All from the same year, Please, Please do:

It's Truly Beautiful.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
No, not an acoustic version or whatever. Just the original from the album - everything adds to it and it is great.
This rehearsal was done in the Main Lounge (where he did his performances) of the hotel. It is a towel. The guys sitting down @ table were throwing ice cubes up at him. I don't think Mary has left the world, more like you said that she is asleep ("....I see her lying there). At least I like to think she is physically still there.
He also did the rehearsal for "Polk Salad Annie" in the Main Lounge at czcams.com/video/hv6Epy3pjUc/video.html which is very good. Another very enjoyable rehearsal in the MGM studio is "Elvis Presley in the studio, 1970" at czcams.com/video/GJo3O3QIBJk/video.html.
This is one of my favorite songs. It's just lovely. You need to hear the studio version. 🥰
It’s a towel.
Great reaction Seph this version is from the 2001 and it was cut if you need to react to the full version it’s on the 1970 version with the full musicians and backing vocals it’s absolutely awesome and so is the studio version such a gorgeous song
The Memphis mafia are throwing water on him
Seph! Brother!! You gotta listen to the album version. It's amazing. Lisa Marie named it as her favorite song by her daddy.
Well the studio version is amazing. Think Lisa said it was one of her favorites.
Beautiful song, Seph listen to the recorded version 1970. You will really like it. Promise....
It’s a white towel
Seph: Lamar Fike is the one who threw the drink. It looks like Marty Lacker and Sonny West sitting beside him. Notice they all run when Elvis throws water at them! There is unedited footage where Elvis sings the song that you were. It sounds a lot like you - sped up! They cut that goofy singing part out - as well as him saying Big A#s! Someone found the old footage and it’s out there now.
Nice reaction Seph.
👑✌️
This was a short rehearsal. Here’s the official version, in all its glory: czcams.com/video/F0g56qW28t8/video.htmlfeature=shared
Man sometimes your "rules" doesn't make any sense, you can't rate a song by hearing just a couple of verses. And why not do a double reaction to the song while you are at it? Nice to see Elvis in rehearsal having fun with the guys. Ok I read in one of your comments that you had a hard time getting this reaction through, you said it took you about 8 hrs and a lot of editing. I guess making a double reaction would have taken you a lot more work and time, so I understand. Thank's again for all the effort you put in and the enjoyment you are spreading.
Especially this song. The studio version is a must listen
@@BrandonAyong I'm afraid we have to wait for the studio version reaction for about a year. This is torture...
@@BrandonAyong I agree, the studio version of this is one of his most beautiful sung.
This wouldn't have been possible as a double reaction because of the crazy copyright 😭
But i promise I'll react to this song again 😄
Unfortunately this is just a rehearsal ( and its edited ) it does not do justice to the original studio version featured on "That's The Way It Is" LP there are many more verses and it is probably one of Elvis' most sincere vocals look forward to your view on the original release.
Please react to the studio master version
Please react to this now….
Don’t know who this guy is. Have seen him sitting making comments a few times. The Elvis doesn’t seem to have much time for him though
Not the best vocally, but it's just rehearsal. I love anything where I can see him in action.
2nd comment: Since you did a reaction to the rehearsal of "Mary In The Morning" I shall wait until you react to the official studio recording to give recording info.
But what I can do is provide the date & time(s) & place of this reheaesal sesh.
So without further adieu: Talking/ "Mary In The Morning" (1st half only/ cut) 4:01
At: Main Show Room in The Las Vegas International Hotel
On: August 7, 1970
Times: 12:00 p.m./ 5:00 p.m.
Note: According to the log book there is or was "Mary In The Morning" (#2) 4:23 right after the the first rehearsal was cut.
Whether that one is available for viewing/ watching I don't know.
I have only just learned of the 2nd consecutive rehearsal of "Mary In The Morning" myself.
Okay. Moving on: Songwriters: Johnny Hendry Cymbal & Michael Rashkow.
Bios below (short info today):
1st: Johnny Cymbal (born John Hendry Blair; February 3, 1945 - March 16, 1993)[1] was a Scottish-born American songwriter, singer and record producer who had numerous hit records, including his signature song, "Mr. Bass Man".
2nd: Michael Rashkow (July 18, 1941 - January 23, 2013) was an American songwriter, record producer and the founder of an advertising agency called T:MC. He wrote "Mary in the Morning" with Johnny Cymbal. It was recorded by Elvis Presley, Glen Campbell, Al Martino, Dire Straits's Guy Fletcher, and many other artists. He formed Pineywood Productions with Ellie Greenwich in the late 1960s. Among the artists they wrote for and produced were Dusty Springfield, The Daily News, The Definitive Rock Chorale, The Fuzzy Bunnies, The Whatnauts and The Other Voices as well as Ellie Greenwich. Their publishing arm, Pineywood Music, published their own material and songs by other writers including Steve Tudanger and Paul Levinson, a member of The Other Voices.
And that is it everyone! That's all I've got!
TCB ⚡ & TLC ❤ & peace ✌& blessings 🙏 to you & yours & to one & all here as well 💕
Memphis mafia minions as an audience..In my opinion, they didn't lift him up
The full studio version of "Mary in the Morning" on "That's the way it is" Album is a must listen to Seph to give it its fair due review! Just sayin'!
Do not delete please! Maybe someone else have some audience recording I never heard of 😊
It's funny with copyright issues, There's a Chinese guy, You'll see him on here and he listens through a whole album all the way through with no pauses and it's never taken down. He just says a few words at the end and that's it . but yet others have to pause a few times for One track. strange. No I'm not referring to anyone, I'm just saying in general that's how it is.
This took me 3 hours to upload and "8 attempts" It just kept getting blocked over and over. I have to admit i nearly gave up after the first 3 attempts :(
@@SephPlays Oh 🎶Lawdy Miss Clawdy🎶 Seph I soooo feel your heartache on that 💔💔

Awww, thank you Seph 💜🙏💕
And as I have told you before you're an absolute legend yourself 🎸🏆🎸🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
The song has been edited..
You put this in front of Devil in Disguise and Jailhouse Rock. Gain some perspective.
It's definitely better then Jailhouse Rock. But it's in the same rank as Devil In Disguise :D I wouldnt say either Mary in the morning or Devil in disguise is better or worse then the other. But thats just my opinion
Sorry, but you should have reeacted to the studio version instead. I like this rehearsal, but it is not the real version.
towel
Definitely, Jeanine :)
Not a fan of this song. It's alright. Not up to his standard of great ballads. It's always fun to watch him messing around at rehearsals though. This was the final year of him truly being in top form all the time.
Where would you rank this?
