I can’t imagine how tragic it is to have your life suddenly ripped away and knowing two people could have scared away the attacker- she was looking for people because she thought it would save her. ID channel’s “A Crime To Remember” (season 2, episode 1 titled “38 Witnesses”) is about Kitty’s murder. I think I remember it, either, insinuating or outright stating that she was involved with a woman at the time. I knew this all along, so I had to have learned it from somewhere, and that episode was the first time I’d heard of Kitty Genovese. Maybe I realized it from another source later on, though. 🤷‍♀️
      Don’t know what channels are available to you, but, if possible, check out A Crime to Remember’s take on this horrific murder and others. The dramatizations on the show are so good, so intriguing and so darn heartbreaking. It’s wonderful that lovely Georgia is offering such a brilliant video about Miss Genoveve. But people *did* do something. The “no one did anything” narrative has been proven false. There is a documentary that focuses on her younger brother’s quest to find out what really happened. Several people called the police. One man yelled from his window, scaring her attacker away and stopping the first phase of the attack. (The attack took place in multiple locations, in three separate “phases.”) More than one person called the police. (But unfortunately the police didn’t list all calls regarding Kitty’s attack.) Also, the documentary (and this video) revealed that Sophia, Kitty’s friend and neighbor, came to Kitty’s aid, putting herself in danger, as Sophia didn’t know whether Kitty’s murderer was still there or whether the attack was still on going. Sophia held Kitty and comforted her, as they waited for the ambulance. The fact that she didn’t die alone was a great source of comfort to her younger brother, who had been extremely troubled by his sister’s murder from the time he was a child.
      The documentary discusses the statements that her murderer made regarding Kitty’s murderer. Those statements were so chilling. They give particular insight as to how truly evil and depraved he was. And as this video states, he was a monster, with absolutely no regard for human life.

    As a girl who grew up not far from the English coast, I have often heard seagulls shrieking. It sounded very much like a woman suffering from an injury screaming for help however, because I heard it every night when there was a storm, it was just a noise. One night I was awakened by a scream that went on for what felt like hours. I couldn’t move since I wasn’t fully conscious and had problems with sleep apnea. All I could hear is a distressed woman shouting “Somebody help me!”. Slowly, I realised it was a seagull and the state I was in- of drifting in and out of sleep- had hallucinated words onto the womanly cries. It was then I realised how much seagulls sounded like women bleeding to death. England is a horror show sometimes.

    That was an incredible video, Georgia, thank you so much for making it! I remember studying this in university about a decade ago; sad to see nothing has changed. I remember thinking back then how monstrous it was of all those people to not do anything. And I'm furous at myself now, 'cause I see I took the word of teachers and coursebooks as pure truth. But then again, a student isn't expected to question every single thing I guess. It's why it's university, or at least it's supposed to be...

    I talk about and write about Kitty all the time. I learned about this story a long time ago after watching a show about her on TV. It was the most bizarre thing.. I was laying in bed and all of a sudden the very second that the show ended and the credits started rolling, I heard a huge crash and crunching sound outside. I ran to my window and saw two cars had crashed into each other at an intersection in my neighborhood. I had never seen or heard an accident like that before and I took it as a sign to never be a bystander and I've stood by that ever since.
    I have many stories of me having to call the police because others just didn't care or want to, but this story bugs me the most - One time a coworker had somehow sliced his foot onto a huge piece of glass and was pouring blood everywhere. This man was literally standing in a pile of blood and my manager went into the office and just sat in his chair with his hands over his face, saying he can't deal with it and doesn't want to call for an ambulance.. wtf? Anyway, out of 40 people working at the time I was the only one who called for him. I don't understand people.

    such a good video! its really great that you bring up the social ills these cases point to (and that you draw your own conclusion!), since so much of true crime is more like...scratching an itch for morbidity. which i dont think can be divorced from the genre anyway, but its great to have these discussions!

    Great video, as always! Also, I always found it weird that girls call their female friends girlfriends because when that term is used I always think they mean a romantic partner, but that's just me. Anyways, interesting case, and as for cases that have been dramatized in media, HH Holmes and Lizzie Borden are perfect examples.
    PS I love the earrings. Very Slytherin

    • @dellahicks7231

      We have used the term 'Girlfriend' to describe our heterosexual friends that are girls for years where I live. I am a married heterosexual female in my mid 50's, perhaps it is more the norm depending on where one lives, and possibly age has something to do with it.
      I live in a Canadian city of 36,000, so hardly ultra urban, and most females in a same sex relationship here, introduce their girlfriends as their partners.

    • @TheScarletAlchemist
      @TheScarletAlchemist Před 3 lety +2

      @@dellahicks7231 I've known plenty of people who call their female friends girlfriends. I just meant that, for me, it never made much sense. When I was a kid it would confuse me because a lot of women in my family use the term in that way and I was always just like "you mean your friend?" because I knew they were hetero. 😹 I think it's regional and generational. Probably because it's only super recent that people have felt comfortable enough with society to discuss non-hetero relationships, so younger generations (not calling you old, I just mean roughly 30s and younger) would be more used to a female talking about her girlfriend and meaning a romantic partner.

    • @dellahicks7231
      @dellahicks7231 Před 3 lety +3

      @@TheScarletAlchemist I agree that it is likely a generational issue, our son is almost 22 years old, don't think I've ever asked him how he perceives the term, but I suspect he would think along the lines you mention, it would denote a same sex partner.
      I knew you weren't referring to me as old Scarlet's Wonderland, sometimes there are only so many ways to word things!
