In one of the more baffling and likely self-destructive moves of the 2024 presidential cycle, the Florida Democratic Party has decided it just doesn’t need to hold a presidential primary this year. Now, Marianne Williamson and Dean Phillips aren’t exactly political goliaths, but in a cycle where one of the Democratic messages is that your vote for the wrong candidate is a potential threat to American democracy - pause for irony - there’s something spectacularly perfect about a state party concluding that the only way to preserve democracy is to cancel an expected primary election. Meanwhile, Ron DeSantis’s presidential campaign has, so far, not worked out as he and his biggest supporters hoped. Am I supposed to pretend that hasn’t happened in order to make you feel better?
You can argue, accurately, that barring some unexpected health issue, President Joe Biden is just about certain to be the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee. Marianne Williamson - remember her? - is getting about 9 percent in most national polls. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is off to run as an independent. And Dean Phillips, a relatively obscure Minnesota congressman who stepped in around the time Kennedy departed the Democratic primary, is currently at 3.5 percent in the RealClearPolitics average of recent national polling."

Please reach out to the Florida Democratic Party and any other elected officials that you feel like could put a little pressure on them. Might be best to reach out through folks campaign accounts as they’re not supposed to talk about campaign issues on work time. I was not trying to talk down to you later I’ll just sharing a few little things I’ve learned in case others didn’t know.

The ONLY reason I registered as a Democrat is to vote in primaries and try to get more progressive, non-corporate candidates in office. Also, the ONLY reason I was planning to vote in this upcoming one is to vote for Marianne Williamson even though I know it would have just been a protest vote.
But now that the un-democratic Democratic party of Florida has made the decision for me, I not only see no reason to vote in the primary now but am pretty much done with the Biden-humping Democrats. I'm either changing back to the Greens or registering as a non-affiliated independent, since any advantage in staying with the Florida Dems is now null & void. This is the final nail in the coffin of a party that has already become an impotent, dying institution in this ultra far-right fascist state.

The ONLY reason Biden won in 2020, given the ordinary levels of voter interest EVEN WITH A FASCIST INCUMBENT, is because enough interest was stirred with a real primary race. Four years on, with internet attention spans, people will NOT be motivated enough to prevent Dump from resuming power if Biden demonstrates he's too chickenshit to contest any number of challengers should he fail to even comment on this- and that's what the Florida DNC is demonstrating with their backdoor shit, just like they backdoored failure for Bernie (twice).
Biden has 50 years of legislative experience (and I think he's done better more than worse the past 3 years, regardless of broken campaign promises), but I HAVE to point out that none of it is less than a decade old; and if you think that experience is MORE important than paying close attention to the past few years as some of the candidates have demonstrated, but Biden clearly has less, we're about to find out the costs of that being incorrect, because that's not the kind of performance enough people pay attention to.

What she is reporting is not true about the process of running for political office in Florida, and I'd like to clarify based on my own experience as a former congressional candidate in the state. In Florida, anyone can run for any political seat, including the presidency, without needing approval from the Democratic Party or any other party. However, there are state-specific requirements to qualify for candidacy. These include either obtaining a certain number of signatures (145,040 for the presidency) or paying a qualifying fee ($10,400). Further details and requirements can be found in the Florida Qualifying Handbook, available at the Florida Department of Elections State website.
I think it's time we ended parties. I mean... they're called parties for a reason, I think they've partied long enough. Let each candidate stand on their own merits.

This episode of Florida election shenanigans caught me by surprise.
This coverage here is laughably horrible. It’s clear that no one at TYT understands the primary process in Florida.
The members of the executive committee are elected from each county by county party committee members. It works out to be 137 executive committee members, 137 members from across the state do not meet without anyone else knowing, I literally knew they were meeting before they were meeting lol. It’s incumbent upon the campaigns to reach out to those 137 elected officials and get them on board with their campaigns. These aren’t even hard things to do, the county parties are required to make their monthly meetings public and a simple email to a party chair or committee member can get you a meeting with them.
This is 100% on the campaigns inability to understand the process, which isn’t surprising since one candidate is an unqualified celebrity, one candidate doesn’t meet the constitutional requirements, and one candidate announced too late. If you want to make the ballot in Florida hire serious campaign people who understand the election process.
And I fully understand this is going to be an extremely unpopular take but there’s also a simple solution: Stop raging on the Internet and actually participate in your local county and town parties. It’s fairly easy to get involved and get elected to the state committee.
That make sense if Mary Ann didn’t already run and knows how it works. Regardless it’s undemocratic

And the state executive committee members are Democratically elected by Democrats across Florida. Just because your preferred candidate doesn’t have enough real world support does not automatically make the process “undemocratic”.
