As an Italian myself, I can say 75% of us it's just like that in our day-to-day lives!
We tend to be over excited, over smiling, loud, and people from abroad don't seem to understand that it's just our way of communicating, those traits don't really define the single person themselves as much as they define an entire group of people.
In the last couple of years, I've been traveling around the UK and I have had the opportunity to spend a lot of time there. I can say quite frankly that for me to be able to understand the British conversational traits, so much different from mine (proxemity, intonation, the use of wittiness instead of long conversations, of sarcasm instead of irony, etc.), it has been a hard challenge! I thought I was prepared, but I definitely was not.
I love how our different cultural traits define us in a really deep and complex way, it is stimulating and it makes me feel like I am curious about what other people think, feel and how they deal within general interactions.
These kinds of things are what makes us so human and interesting at the same time.

I'm sure I would like red onion ice cream. I like ice cream and I like red onion. We once put our lives in the hands of the information place at Venice station. They booked us a place in a canal parallel to the Bridge of Sighs and close to St Mark's square, with a lovely friendly lady as proprietor. We had a window overlooking a canal where the gondoliers parked and sang as they got ready for work in the morning. Fantastic, and it only cost £5 for bed and breakfast. Mind you, it was in the late 70s. It was still a lot cheaper than most places in Venice. Venice is expensive and don't buy too big a beer (a grande) while sitting near the Rialto. The waiter will be furiously wiping your table several times after about 10 minutes, trying to get you to move on. Fast turnover is how they make their money. He also kept speaking to my husband in German, though my husband is English.
