  • CV90 Fighting Vehicle or called Stridsfordon 90 (Strf 90) is a highly tactical armored combat vehicle family developed in 1984 to the early 1990s to meet operational requirements of the Swedish Army. It was co-developed by Saab Bofors Dynamics and Hagglunds, with Bofors responsible for the turret, armament, and final assembly, while Hagglunds providing the chassis and armored hull. BAE Systems Hagglunds currently produces the entire vehicle. The vehicle first entered service in Sweden in 1993. The CV90 family of vehicles provides unrivaled performance in the 20-35 tonne class and has been used by national forces, the United Nations, and NATO in missions all over the world

Personally, I only got to play with the BV206 which is probably the best off-road vehicle but has absolutely zero protection. Old P10 in Stängnäs (Sweden) which is closed today. But fighting these vehicles was not easy when they came storming through the forest and also full of soldiers who could quickly take up a fighting position before attacking. So I think these vehicles will be perfect for Ukraine when they arrive. agile vehicles in all environments with strong impact on targets.

    The 40mm the Ukrainians will get has the ability to kill Russian tanks with flanking shots. That's pretty important for an IFV.
    ATGMs are powerful tools, absolutely. But consider what they are. A two shot gun that requires you stand still to fire and remain still to hit. When looking at them from. That perspective, you realize they aren't to be relied upon on a fluid battlefield.
    A 40mm autocannon that can fire accurately while on the move and hit its target repeatedly becomes a huge advantage, especially in a forest or urban setting where ATGMs wire guidance can be obstructed.

Also a few for over seas airforce air-field protection units of the RAF Regiment might find very useful. Proven in a battle formation role in Afghanistan it's a handy piece of kit with some fitted with the useful heavier cannon in anti AFV/IFV anti bunker busting abilities. So yes it's one vehicle that everyone in NATO could use in reconnaissance and troop carriers departments. I dont know what the latest version costs with missile and extra 7.62 machine gun side pod additions it's has undeniably the best electronic ability all readymade tested in use and theres no reports of the tracks being less reliable and unlike the new ascot by different manufacturers the uk armys vehicle making the crews sick the cv90 should be at the top of the list un less the new boxer tracked variety being any better only time will tell . If they are used for what they are designed to do, they are very effective. Behind a spearhead of heavy tanks, they can clear most things such as light armored vehicles and other vehicles that are not heavy tanks, although they can also knock them out from the side. If you have some German Gepard with you and an outer screen of fighter jets, it will be quite difficult for the Russians to resist. The problem, of course, is all the mines that have been laid. But for its task, the CV90 is very competent.

    We Swedes have known this for 30 years, welcome to the club. By the way our IFV as known as CV90 is for sale if you want to buy it.
    Hence the need for IFV's that are really mobile and here CV90 is king. It can carry 8 soldiers and it has good speed and mobility to do this task, spread out your infantry.
    This is also why the CV90 has become so popular I think. Most western militaries have realized this and rather go for mobility with IFV's instead of main battle tanks.
    The CV9040 drops off troops within 0-50m from the enemy position, or simply drives up to it and let's the troops fight mounted.
    In Afghanistan it was apparently tremendously deadly. The Danish or Norwegians were caught in some kind of fight/ambush and they annihilated the enemy.

    I wonder why all new export versions use a different canon than the original 40/70 Bofors gun. Even the new 35/50 from Bushmaster seems to have a noticeably smaller case compared to the OG 40 mm Bofors. Smaller case means less gun powder and thus less kinetic energy or a smaller multi purpose “warhead” if not kinetic. The Bushmaster 35 mm HE weights almost half the HE for the Bofors. The 40mm Bofors, with the modern 3P ammunition is really dangerous for both infantry (air burst mode, tungsten preformed fragments), armored targets (delayed detonation for penetration) and even helicopters and drones (again, air burst). And it can also shoot an APFSDS-T armor piercing round that is useful even against lighter tanks. I don’t think any of the other cannons have something that comes even close. So why is everybody sticking to the much more limited “smaller” cannons? I’m guessing the “magazine” for the bushmasters are bigger ofc, but a three round burst of the 40mm Bofors delivers around 3000 tungsten balls so there is probably not a need to send that many rounds against one target anyhow. Or am I missing something major here?

      The export versions use different canons because those countries wanted that.

    • @Praetori
      @Praetori Před rokem +2

      The original Swedish 9040 was designed as a part of a counter-attack concept where fast and heavy armored formations with MBTs supported by mechanized-infantry would be used to strike against airborne or naval landings before solid beachheads could be consolidated. Necessitated by the neutrality employed by Sweden and reasonong that the Russian invader would come by air and sea. Thus mobility and high firepower (airburst 40mikes) was selected over staying-power (more ammo stowage) for a concept revolving around decisive action.
      Larger calibers requires more upfront battlefield-logistics (FARP) in order to keep a battalion in combat so a lot of nations opted for CV90s with more commonly used 25, 30 or 35mm for infantry-support in their mot/mech-infantry battalions rather than more oomph 40mm as part of armored battalions (like Sweden).

    • @tessjuel
      @tessjuel Před rokem +1

      A smaller gun means there is room for more ammunition. The CV9040 can have 24 rounds loaded in the gun and 210 more stored elsewhere in the vehicle. The CV9035 can have 70 rounds loaded but only 133 additional rounds stored in the vehicle. The CV9030 can have as many as 160 rounds loaded in the gun and 240 more stored.
      So what is best, a few big bangs or a lot of smaller ones? There's no absolute answer and different buyers went for different options.

    saying the CV90 was developed from 1984 to 1990 doesnt make any sense. you can say the core platform started development in 1984 and reached service in 1990 but since development of this platform hasnt stopped since it started and people will be sitting somewhere today working on it and they will be working on it a year from now too its just not accurate to put an end date.
    its a platform that is constantly improved and constantly has more options that you can put on it. for example look at the CV90120 Ghost which is not yet introduced anywhere, or the CV90120 Thorshammer which was quite recently introduced.
