  • Now that lambing is down to the final few, I need to get back to the rest of the flock management that's been piling up!
    Today, I weighed some market lambs, Danny came to bale the rest of our second cut hay, and I spent the rest of the day preparing ewes for out of season breeding that will be happening over the next few weeks!

    I don't usually read the comments but decided today to peruse them. I just don't know how you have ever managed to raise sheep without all the (well meaning I hope) suggestions and criticisms from viewers! 😂Sheesh. The more I know of people, the more I like my dog. You're doing a wonderful job and it's a good thing you have thick skin!

    Can we get a ram video some time, please? I'd like to know how they're prepared for breeding, what feed they get, how often do they get sheared & hoof trimmed, how do you maintain their sexual health & potency, what are your culling & replacement decisions, general handling & maintenance, etc.?

      Yes farmers are “Jacks of all trades” and accrue a vast range of skills together with superior judgement skills over their working lives. They also have great confidence in their own ability to handle jobs/problems.

    Sandi don't forget hoof trimming I thought this when you mentioned shearing

    • @susanmarsh2856
      @susanmarsh2856 Před 4 lety +3

      Hoof trimming is a laborious job mainly due to the work load on the hands using the secateurs. Squeezing and rolling the crate starts to be exhausting too. The work is tough on your back as well. The different breeds of sheep have differing hoof “nails”. Some are quite soft while other are very tough. Ram hooves are harder yet again. All hooves seem to grow faster because the sheep live on bedding so they walk only a little and do not keep their own feet trimmed walking around on differing surfaces outside.

They are in behind the barn pasture for medication 2 times a day. The vet will be out tomorrow to pull cultures and sensitive testing b/4 we do anything. Anyway have a great day.

    Is there a way to set up the Gallagher where you can set some type of alarm on the tag numbers on your list, so when it scans those specific ewes, it beeps or a note comes up saying it's been chosen for culling? Nurse here. When you check the vaginas for lambs or help deliver a lamb, do not check their teets for milk with vaginal fluid on your hands. Remove your gloves or wash your hands first so you don't transfer bacteria from the ewe's vaginal to the teet. Keep up the good work!
