A Different Way To Bunnyhop: Skills Challenge Day 18

  • We're going to learn the "english bunnyhop" today, which is a quick hop that evenly pulls both wheels off the ground at the exact same time. Crouch into the bike to pre-load your spring, and don't forget about your pedal scoop when you pop up! The biggest mistake people make is forgetting the pedal scoop, and then their back wheel stays on the ground.

    Grateful for an easier skill for me after struggling with yesterday's challenge! In fact, when trying and failing to do the crab walk 360, I just started doing simultaneous hops while twisting in the air as I got tired and my body refused to go through the extra motions of the crab walk.

      Also, I did 20 consecutive small hops yesterday while warming up for the crab walk, so I think I'll rest the tired muscles today! Skills are hard work!

    That's actually something that I learned from the Joy of Bike channel. It's the easiest way to hop imo.

    I find this way more helpful than yesterdays skill for people on mountain bikes with long travel. I ride a 170 mm enduro bike and I can do the small little rocking movements and pivots and all that stuff but it’s so hard to the point where it’s almost not worth it so I definitely get way more use out of this skill

      Agreed, rocking with 170mm of travel can be quite the challenge when your suspension is soaking it up. Glad that today's drill was helpful!

      In our clinic we call it a “Level Lift.”

      They are two completely different hops. The American is a front wheel lift, followed by a back wheel lift to create the hop. The English is when both wheels leave the ground at the same time. Lee said there are limitations with the English hop, because it is very limited into how high you can go. You can hop much higher with the American hop. Lee said that clipped in riders cheat by pulling their feet up to hop.

    Do you think an older rider 56 can still learn and perform these skills if applying these techniques and become proficient, or do you think too many bad habits set in, which doesn't allow for the same muscle memory to perform like you'd like. Thanks from guy who still can't manual 😡👍😁 Rick G. Denver Colorado

      56 is fine if your fit. Just keep practicing. As kids we used to practice hours a day. Nearly every day. You’ll get the hang of it. At our age it’s backflips we should stay away from 😅

      Yes and yes. But from the point of view of someone a lot older, it just seems to take a little longer. The bad habits are very hard to break after that many years, and there is a tendency to reinforce those bad habits if you are not disciplined and deliberate about the way you practice. My experience is that practicing the same trials skill on consecutive days is not productive like it may have been 30 years ago. I still work out 6 days a week, so I'm not sure if that is physical or mental or both. But something like hops for height, I can definitely feel a bit less spring in my legs the next day.

    What is the best bike for trials?

    • @sapinva
      @sapinva Pƙed 6 měsĂci +1

      Preferably something with strong wheels. Trials bike is best for trials, followed by dirt jumper, or any hard tail. But any bike will work, the technique is the same. Helps to lock out the shocks on a full suspension.
