Actually, Beethoven didn’t name this sonata “Moonlight.” While Beethoven did name some of his 32 piano sonatas, his fourteenth sonata (Moonlight Sonata) was not one of them. Until after his death, it was simply his Piano Sonata No. 14 in C sharp minor. This is why the third movement doesn’t really sound like moonlight.

I'd encourage anyone who's on the fence about learning this to go ahead and try it. It's so much fun to play once you get the hang of it. I played this many years ago and struggled at first because I couldn't quite reach an octave yet, but once my hands grew this piece really came into its own for me. One of my favorite pieces to play - well worth the effort. And to be honest, it's not quite as hard as it sounds.

Tips to anyone playing this for real:
First off, please understand I'm NOT trying to brag, I'm genuinely giving real tips as someone who has played this before.
Before even attempting to play this, please know your scales and chords. This will help SO MUCH, not only for this piece, but for any future piece.
Leading up to playing for the first time: It's actually not as hard as it seems. The third movement is primarily all patterns in different keys. Muscle memory will do the work.
Now, it's your first practice of the day. DON'T start off with this piece. Obviously, it is at a fast tempo. Start off with a quick warm up (which could be scales!) My warm up was actually the first and second movements of Moonlight. Also, split up the movement into smaller sections (once you see it, you'll clearly know there are certain "sections" that have their own style). It will make practicing much easier.
This goes out to anyone with small hands-- If you are trying to play 0:52 and find yourself feeling very uncomfortable or unable to reach it, just ignore the bottom octave in the right hand. (I know the struggle of having small hands, I played this when I was 13 with like 17cm/6 1/2 inch hands rip).
1:35 and similar parts: I practiced these notes completely by themselves to get the feel and speed. Think of them as large interval grace notes, it'll take time to perfect.
    1:49 This took a lot of practice as well, I used the fingerings from jumping 1 - 3 - 5 - 5 - 1 - 3 - 5 - 5. The hardest part is accurately hitting the 5 - 1.
3:32 (Also including runs such as the intro) Alright, this was one of the hardest parts for me honestly. I'm a righty and I play violin, so I'm much more used to the treble cleff than anything. What I did was forget about the right hand (it's just a pattern) and practice my left hand by itself.
3:50 My LEAST FAVORITE spot. You WILL get hand cramps in your left hand. It's just constant octaves. There's nothing to do about it except stamina :/
4:14 Chord - Use una corda for this, it'll give a nice muffle sound.
5:46 Not much to say about this, just wanted to let you know it's fun to play lmao
6:06 Ah, the demonic ending. For anyone with large hands, octaves shouldn't be too hard, you can also use 1 - 4. To those with small hands, I pray for you.
6:09 Again, I practiced these by themselves. ESPECIALLY the run back up, those were tough to get down. Use a metronome, it's really helpful!
6:20 Chromatic scale. Not too hard, just get the fingerings down and it should be a breeze.
6:48 The iconic ending. Your right hand should be a master of this by now, good luck getting the left hand to do the same, haha (what a pain...)!
Alright, that's all I have for specifics. If anyone has any more questions, I'll try to answer them to the best of my ability! And now, I'm not a teacher, haha, I'm just a random Asian teenage girl who would like to spare your souls :) As a time frame, I learned this in about three to four months with around two hours of practice each day. Neat little note: It made my WPM 110 for a few weeks I shit you not.
Anyways, good luck to everyone trying this! Practice makes perfect! Time for me to go die trying to learn Chopin Etudes!

To play this you must be in a slightly different position than usual. When the song begins, play like you normally would. As the song progresses, place your foot atop the piano and slowly bring your weight down on it. Eventually you shall completely lie down on the piano and carefully distribute your weight. Now, the next step may require assistance for amateurs. This can be from siblings, friends, spouses, or pets. All participating shall flop on the piano like fishes desperately gasping for fish oxygen. This requires much practice and study to succeed. It is recommended that you take several times more caffeine than usual. Any seizures that may be induced are encouraged. Others can also help by dragging their faces wherever keys seem neglected. As others may have demonstrated, random children are especially helpful for this part. They tend to become professionals in no time. Try to keep the steady pace of a cheetah who just got its cheetah girlfriend stolen by a flying monkey. Many will have passed out by the ending, but if you have not, good job. You now have three days to live

Just try and learn one hand at a time. For instance just learn whats blue first. Forget about the right hand. Once you have that down then learn only the right. Youll find that its alot easier to learn it. The fun/hard part is putting the two parts together! For that part I suggest smoking some sativa strain and try playing it. You will find that your brain will mesh the two parts together alot easier. It worked for me on Nuvole Bianche by Ludovico Einaudi.

Jw- piano On the contrary, at this time in his life, the primary reason for this piece was unrequited love. See, Beethoven was in love with one of his pupils, Countess Julia Guicciardi, whom he believed to be below him in terms of status, although this proved disingenuous, since she was the daughter of members of the Austrian aristocracy.
In any case, Beethoven eventually proposed marriage to her, and, although Julia herself wasn’t opposed to this, her father banned this due to Beethoven’s peculiar nature and lack of wealth.
This rejection led to Beethoven dedicating this sonata to her.
Originally titled “Sonata quasi una fantasia”, Moonlight sonata received its modern name when a music critic compares it to the moon setting over Lake Lucerne.
