    Great update thanys Guys. Bit tricky getting the pots out from so close to the rocks. Nice catch of Lobster, and good footage of Miss Octopus! Great to see her go back, and the Berried Lobster. Still on catch up! Stay safe & well! 🎣🎣👍👍

    I don't know if there is evidence for a link but the commercial boats in Cornwall have been hitting cuttlefish hard the last few years. I reckon that has reduced competition and the octopus are taking advantage and the population is growing.

      I think its warming seas or maybe a shift in the gulf stream. We used to have them here many years ago my grandmother pre war used to go down the beach looking for octopus. Its believed the cold winter of 63 pretty much wiped them out here.

      Its been excellent. We have only ever pulled up to 2 pots on a string each pot weighs around 40lb dry without ropes. We pull pots up to 100ft of water. They are very good for space saving and it is easy to pull the rope from the winch if the pots get snagged. The one I have is rated up to 10mm rope but we have pulled 12mm rope no problem.

    Troj, do you ever notch the eggers?

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  Před 3 měsíci

      We don't have V notching here. The size limit was increased some years ago and since then the lobster population has exploded.The decline in large predatory fish has probably also helped the lobster population increase.

    Hi Trojs I noticed that you don't knotch the lobsters tail if they are carrying berries to prove she's a breeding lobster is there any reason why you don't do it are the laws different

    Would it not be better for someone to dive for them on a commercial venture , they can fetch good money at restaurants , or is it to deep and rough seas

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  Před 3 měsíci

      It is deep but in the future if we end up with many I am sure some divers will

      @@Trojwaterman One of the scallop divers stabbed a octo a few weeks ago. Nearly drowned him, tore the reg out his mouth and mask off. Powerfull creatures, some of the crabbers here have been getting five or ten a day mostly your end of the island. Cornwall way some of the crabbers have been catching a hundred kilo plus a day, getting good money for them but they are going to decimate the shellfish. When I started fishing, just after the 63 winter that killed all the octopus there was very few crab. During the next few years the crab numbers exploded. About five years ago, the crab seemed to decline very quickly. People will be screaming overfishing, but I think there was more to it than just that. They just seemed to almost disappear over night??. The appearance of small crayfish around the island will be easy prey for the octo's.

    wonder what would happen if you had too throw all female crabs/lobster back .apart price going up ,would the population increase dramatically within say 3yrs .? a moratorium period every 10yrs

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Probably not as when crabs mate the female changes her shell the male then has to be big enough to carry her underneath and protect her. So if all the males are being targeted the females have no large males to mate with and protect them.
