  • Finally, a video to settle the debate! An E30 with a turbo M20 or an E30 with an S52 swap, Which one is better? In this video, We talk about my car and the Ebay turbo build on the otherwise stock M20 and go over my friend's S52 swapped E30. We then take them on a nice drive to Mexico and do a few runs to see which one is faster. There is a lot of information, good visuals, and plenty of turbo and straight-piped inline 6 noises in this video.       I did Daily the white e30 for two years.. 100 miles a day 😂
      It has just spiraled out of control and it’s not something I want to drive that far with 215s on 10” wide wheels anymore.

    The transmission gearing is the reason for the different final drive ratios. The ZF310/320 boxes have no overdrive (5th is a 1:1) so they need long gearing in the diff, and Getrag 260s have something like a 0.85:1 overdrive. For your turbo car I'd definitely go with something between a 3.25 and a 3.73 final drive. I have a 3.25 in my turbo E30

    Got two E34s with M20s with over 190k miles, they are really reliable as long as they get their maintenance

      it hasnt been dyno'd but based off cars I have ran that were dyno'd Im guessing around 250whp. I am definitely doing MS2 in the next month or 2!

      When both of our cars were stock and we had the exact same drivetrain our races were dead even. We both had the same diff ratios too. The cabrios dont weigh much more than the coupes.

    I was always wandering about this. M20 turbo or S54. Thanks for the video. We have to take in account that the convertible E30 is heavier!
    Is that turbo kit will fit on E21 323i M20 engine?

      If my car had a tune and supporting fuel upgrades, there would have been no chance of the S52 pulling the turbo M20. My car was fuel cutting progressively worse each pull we did. Yeah this kit will fit any M20 engine!

    Gearing is the cause, 4:10 but you could not take off the line as you should with that gear set. What this means is that your set up is no good ,you would have left him if you could get up above the 4500 rpm however note that the s52 was in third all the time i dont know how he would have fared in 4th and 5th because his gear set is also too tall.The S52 would be golden with 3.73 fd or some 3.46

      Yeah i would say 250whp. My friend had a prelude that dyno’d 230hp and i could pull him when i first put the turbo on.

      It has green top injectors which are from a stock m52 i believe. Thats the largest i could use with no tune, anything bigger was running so rich it burnt your eyes when driving lol. But yeah stock original fuel pump and stock dme. As you can see in the video it doesnt pull hard all the way through especially in the higher rpms. It needs a tune and more fuel bad.

    No such thing as a 2.83 e30 lsd. U surely meant 2.93lsd? Its easy for the diff tags to get lost in translation, for the age of these cars, I get it lol. They also had a 2.79lsd, pretty sure thats the longest one that was ever offered in a e30. I loved my 2.93lsd btw!

      My 11/84 325e, 5speed barked 3rd gear, every day of the week! Completely stock, only adjusted the factory fuel enrichment switch on the oem ecu. Again, 2.93lsd, and a non abs car too! Even had the rare fuel cooler setup! My 05/87 325is, 5 speed, 3.73lsd, had a just a split second maf conversion, poly engine n trans mounts, tri flo catback, h&r coilovers, barked 3rd as well. I've had five e30s thru my car ownership. Im a fan, lol.

      @@sidewayzmike m20b25 auto trans. I believe my 86 325es also has a 2.93 lsd with a m20b27 eta and g260 5MT. I also have an 89 325is with a 3.73 lsd with m20b25 and g260 5MT.

      @masscomnet ok, so you have to tell me your opinion, haha. M20b25/getrag 260/3.73lsd. Versus M20b27/getrag 260/2.93lsd. I think they both serve their purpose. Highway cruising. City driving. Snow, maybe say 6" of accumulation. How about going full teenager and doing a donut?
      Oh, and...wasn't the m20b27, the engine that saw the most gains, from just a eprom tuner chip?

      It definitely will this spring after MS2 and injectors/fuel pump. First run it pulled him easy but my car falls on its face in the higher rpms, just not enough fuel w no tune.

      I agree that it doesn't deserve props but I put off boosting many bmws for years because of how expensive it was and time consuming gathering parts and tuning could be. The videos of my car are more for motivation to just do it and work out the bugs later. I love how resiliant the M20 has proven to be and even with a low budget the car produced way more power than stock. I 100% plan on going MS2 and upgrading the fuel pump and injectors this winter and will update. There's definitely more left on the table in its current state!

      I thoroughly enjoy driving my e30 and will never sell it but. If I dont have to daily drive it then every chance that i get to will be exciting. Just like someone buying a motorcycle, they love riding but rarely do you see someone riding one every day as their only vehicle.

      @@CARSTUDIOYT I get what you're saying. I think there's two different types of people in this scenario, just as with the motorcycles. There are folks that "love" their classics, and then there's folks that "live" their classics. I know loads of people that daily their E30s, as well as loads of people that daily their motorbikes. You might also feel a little different about your E30 once you get the running part of it sorted out.
