I just wanted to say thank you to Tom Davis for this wonderful experience. That’s my dog Kody in the video!!! It’s really nice to finally meet someone that absolutely cares about dogs and animals so much. And even though one hour of training is never going to fix the star completely, you at least gave me the steps in the foundations to start training to make this dog a better dog. Your knowledge is unbelievable and the way you describe things is just what a true dog trainer should be. It was definitely worth a 3 Hour Dr. And everyone saying that you should not use a prong collar, get one. I’ve been using it for the past week and it has change the way he walks, change the way he reacts to dogs, it’s been a lifesaver. Not saying he’s fixed but it’s a definite improvement. Thank you to Tom Davis and everyone at upstate canine Academy
Kody is lucky to have you for his human!! To care enough to make that drive to get awesome training says a lot!! I had a negative attitude toward the prong collar when it was recommended to me by a local trainer. But when I saw one of Tom’s videos, I completely changed my attitude, gave it a try, and never looked back!! Best thing I did for my girl. I learned a lot from this video, so thanks for allowing it to be shared!!🐾❤️
Thanks so much for sharing your experience with all of us! My previous dog “Sasha” had some of these same anxiety issues so I know first hand how challenging it can be. You and Kody did great! All the best on your journey.
I lost count how many times I've had folk say to me," How can you love dogs and order them around?" It breaks my heart. You explained it al, so very well thank you.
Hey, could you do some kind of a "check list" for fresh owners of adopted dogs (adults and seniors)? They often come with issues so what would be first things to do in order to establish the rules? How to bring them home, what to teach them first etc.
Well that's pretty hard I guess. Different dogs have different issues. Personal I would give you the advice to work on a loose leash, recall and a good sit (automatically staying, command just breaking with a okay or break), maybe driving calm in a car and somewhen heel. That's what I would recommand at first, because I didn't know either when I got my girl. Little thing for the beginning: go for a walk before you let the dog in, so the dog is calmer.
Hi JoanTheBee! Tom actually has a whole video on introducing an adopted dog to a new home. It’s really great if you haven’t already checked it out I highly recommend doing so. I rescued a 4 yr old pit bull about 2 months ago and after watching that video I was able to recognize all of things I did good and not so good right off the back. That video (and all they others that Tom has provided) actually helped me go back correct some things and has made for a better relationship with myself and buddie.
I really enjoyed having both the POV and the full view of the room. The multiple perspectives really help my brain understand and visualize what is going on.
I needed this video so much. My dog has severe separation anxiety exactly like this dog but he is vocal about it so we attract a lot of attention and we just can’t turn him off. Thank you
I really like the POV from your perspective. It really helps feel like you’re in the moment and helps show exactly what you should do with your body, hands, wrist, etc., when working with the dog. Thank you for continuing to give us great content!😊
Your commentary in real time is very helpful. That's really the reason I've been binge-watching your vids. Lots of times I think it is the things you might normally say to yourself (in your own head) that might be just what one of us (or many) needs to hear.
I have a Golden Doodle myself! Love my dog so much! I just wanted to say that I seriously love how you train and the thought process behind it. Towards the end, it clicked that your philosophy can really apply to humans as well. I used to teach and a lot of what you explained is also taught during student teaching. It's just amazing how it all fits and that you can apply this same training to such a variety of aspects! I continue to be beyond impressed by your videos!
@@tomdavisofficial We have a 3 year old F1 Cockapoo, who really struggles with anixety. This video opened up our world. I read a really good book in the 1990s about parenting that told parents that it's all right to be the boss in the family. (Not to the point of abuse) They have the right to be the leader because they have the responsibility to feed and house everybody. A family is not a democracy. The dog-human bond is not a democracy, either. You get to be the boss. In a kind way, of course.
Yep, its the only rule I have with my dogs..."do as I ask" and in return, you'll be loved, safe, fed and be treated like a king or queen. But you must do as I ask! and dogs are not stupid, they want to please, so if they understand what you want, they will follow.
Great job! I will try this with my puppy, because this is exactly what she does when we're with my mother. I train, feed, walk, play with the puppy, but she's still incredibly fixated on my mother. Don't know the reason. She screams and pulls when we go for a walk together and my mum goes to the store for example and we wait outside. Great video!

My German Shepherd has separation anxiety and working with her on place and keeping her there while I move just out of her eye sight for various lengths of time and then come back. Oh gosh, have two like this, and I’m going to get one especially a prong collar, he pulled me down apartment stairs, it could have ended worse. Saved the other one jumping over a fence from a busy street, I was literally stopping traffic so he wouldn’t be hit. Absolutely getting all the pups the safety collar straps, I’d absolutely die ( well I could have honestly protecting them.) trained horses, and these pups , I set my mind , had a deep conversation with myself, I wouldn’t allow a colt w/o safety, just needed to know how the prongs help, because, I’ve seen training collars used so wrong with pups, now, I’m so convinced it’s absolutely believe, it’s in the safety and love for them, and us. Not one video I haven’t seen that a pup looks stressed, harmed, with proper collars, etc. NOT ONE! That’s love for beautiful creatures and saving their lives also.
You do a fantastic job with these troubled dogs. My Irish wolfhound's are gone now sadly and right now I've no dogs. Yet still I love watching them. Keep up the great work and stay safe. :)
Hi Tom, I absolutely love your videos and it’s helping me a lot. We recently ( less than 2 weeks). Adopted Daisy after fostering her and what made us almost give up on her was her reactive behavior towards strangers and other dogs . As mentioned in the previous comment some times rescue dogs have attitudes and is hard to get to a comfortable level where the dog is fully happy and listens. If you can give us tips on what we should do to make foster / rescue dogs more “calm” and obedient that would be awesome.
@Tom Davis--have you ever looked at functional analysis for implementing behavioral interventions for people? It could be something interesting for more quickly identifying and understanding the reinforcer of the undesirable behavior so you can interrupt that directly. I'm no dog training expert, just a clinical psych doctoral student and therapist, but just thought it could be something cool to look into
I have a really fearful GSD, he's terrified of people but really good with other dogs, I really needed a video talking about how to deal with fearful dogs. Could you do a video talking about how to build confidence in a dog??
I'm not a dog trainer but something that helped my dog a lot was running him through agility type courses and working on new commands and leash work:) Also here's a link to a previous video about this czcams.com/video/KFtJkrRFp7U/video.html
Great video Tom!! It’s so neat to see this guy calm down within minutes. Thanks for doing a video about dog anxiety. I hope you can do more videos on this topic. Any tips for dogs with car anxiety?
It's the owners fault thoe. Typical spoiled dog with no leadership. That dog has been used to getting his way with his behavior. So it's amazing the dog wasnt worse....
My pit mix Sammy is so nervous about everything and is hyper-attached to me. Sammy and his partner in crime Karma rule the house with the exception of the parrot. She's queen!! The pups and the parrots save my life.
My darling Quini is a super smart GSD. I rescued her from a flea infested dirt pit. We work together everyday, learning from your videos! Now, my neighbor has a anxious GSD that they leave alone constantly with no exercise so she barks constantly at mine. Im teaching (the neighbors GSD) to chill and leave Quini alone, its slowly getting better, but its sad. There are NO BAD DOGS!
my moms dog is a beijing poodle and is the same exact way with my mom and i can assure she had never been through any trauma and the more time over the years she spends w my mom the worse she gets. she is not happy or content unless by my moms side so in some cases it is pure genetics along w i’m sure a few other minor factors involved. doodles are only somewhat food motivated so that wouldn’t help n my mom would never use a prong so kinda sad but all in all shes happy i think. Plus as a senior dog now, she still acts like a puppy, it’s amazing actually.
New color looks good on u. Love these short vids. This one was good bc I have a new doodle with issues. Rescue from Mexico. Afraid of being handled but a sweetie. Doesn’t like collars or leashes or being sought after. Thanks again Tom!
Thank you so much for the useful explanation, I saved many puppies from death and i am trying to use your advice to train them so it would be easy to find home , my puppies are 8 months should learn how to walk by leash but the problem they are anxious of people, i want to break that fear and i hope it works with me , I couldn’t find the foster families because people prefer to foster special breed , mine are Cannani desert dogs , very smart and lovely and very special to me . I am watching your videos and i will do as you said , i like that you explain in details , god bless you ❤️

How did it go? Hope the dog was able to calm down
This was very helpful, I hope that you will be able to give us a video that has a little more or maybe a series of related videos
Good mix of the POV and full view shots! The POV is helpful!! Love viewing the Upstate Canine Academy videos from the Midwest! Thank You, TOM!!
Beautiful video and perfect tool for the job and thanks for the link to the buckle my hands can’t do the prong that well the buckle should really help
Awesome Tom from the land down under, Australia. Wayne.
I can see you love dogs. I love them too. They are the best companions if they are treated like a dog,, not like a kid ..
I'm not a dog trainer but something that helped my dog a lot was running him through agility type courses and working on new commands and leash work:)
Also here's a link to a previous video about this czcams.com/video/KFtJkrRFp7U/video.html
I see this alot walking my neighborhood. I'm sure I'll experience it as through my training apprenticeship. Another great lesson. Thank you 🐾NBD!
Great video Tom!! It’s so neat to see this guy calm down within minutes. Thanks for doing a video about dog anxiety. I hope you can do more videos on this topic. Any tips for dogs with car anxiety?
Molly and Buckley are my two dogs names
Bless that owner for not giving up on the dog!
It's the owners fault thoe. Typical spoiled dog with no leadership. That dog has been used to getting his way with his behavior. So it's amazing the dog wasnt worse....
Love ❤️ your videos Tom they are fantastic
One of the very best trainers!
Pleeeease do a video about separation anxiety leaving a dog at home alone 🙏
Yes POV! Very helpful.
My pit mix Sammy is so nervous about everything and is hyper-attached to me. Sammy and his partner in crime Karma rule the house with the exception of the parrot. She's queen!!
The pups and the parrots save my life.
I love the hair Tom ❤️❤️. You are so good at what you do, I wish you could come to Barbados .
Thank you so much for doing all of this for us! I love your teachings
my moms dog is a beijing poodle and is the same exact way with my mom and i can assure she had never been through any trauma and the more time over the years she spends w my mom the worse she gets. she is not happy or content unless by my moms side so in some cases it is pure genetics along w i’m sure a few other minor factors involved. doodles are only somewhat food motivated so that wouldn’t help n my mom would never use a prong so kinda sad but all in all shes happy i think. Plus as a senior dog now, she still acts like a puppy, it’s amazing actually.
Would like to see the whole video ! 😊
New color looks good on u. Love these short vids. This one was good bc I have a new doodle with issues. Rescue from Mexico. Afraid of being handled but a sweetie. Doesn’t like collars or leashes or being sought after. Thanks again Tom!
Thank you for the information.
Another great video! Structure is indeed the key word! Very sweet dog.🐶🐶🐶🐾🐾🐾♥️♥️♥️🙏🙏🙏
Thanks fir sharing. Have a great day all!
