    Thank you so much for all of your help with Saint! We have been working on our obedience and using the ecollar to lower his anxiety. Even in the few days since our sessions with you, I see a huge difference!! I'm so glad we were able to train with you and look forward to all his progress in the future! I can't thank you enough!

    Really helpful video, I rescued a year and a half old GSD that had no socialization and was scared of other dogs and people, 4 months ago. Since COVID, I have not been working and can’t get professional training so I have turned to your videos for help. She knows all her basic commands now but since we are always together, I believe she has become a codependent! She want eat or play unless I’m close to her. If I go in the house when she’s outside she just lays down and stares at the door. I will begin with the sit, stays you described in your videos. Please continue with the tips on separation anxiety, with the pandemic I’m sure there are many dogs and owners in this situation. I will someday return to work and I want to have her ready for that day. Thank you!

    Hey Tom!
    My 8 month old puppy Hudson (chihuahua spaniel mix) is dealing with isolation distress. He gets plenty of exercise and nice long walks twice a day. When someone is home, Hudson is fine to be in his crate, wait patiently, or play with his toys in another part of the home while we’re in the bathroom or kitchen.
    Initially we believed him to have separation anxiety, but as we reinforced crate training and constant rewarding for being quiet when left the room, we discovered his issue is only when we leave the home.
    We approach leaving our house the same way we approached crate training and keeping him in other rooms (we call them “In and Outs”).. started with short periods of time, rewards when he was calm, extended to longer periods of time the more comfortable he got. When doing In and Out training, we can build up his time to hours in his crate, or 15/20 minutes waiting outside the house (it’s a cold winter in Canada, can’t stay out there long).
    The problem comes when we leave the house and Hudson realizes this no longer is a training exercise, he howls excessively until our return. He refuses to relax in his crate or take a nap. He once howled for 3 hours straight when we needed to go out. How am I suppose to reward a calm puppy for my return if he’s never calm and doesn’t stop howling? We need to eventually re-enter our home, but because he’s howling that means Hudson wins.
    We can’t do “In and Out” build ups everytime we need to go out to the gym, dinner, grocery shopping, etc.
    Please help!!
    Michael and Stephanie

    If you tell a dog to stay, I feel you should RETURN TO THE DOG to end the stay, and not end it by calling the dog to you. My reasoning is this: When the dog is on a stay, and he knows the next move is his, when he is called, of c ourse he's going to be attentive and anxiously awaiting that call from the owner that means he can move. On the other hand, if the dog knows he is on an implied "stay" until the owner returns to HIM, he is more likely to rest, relax, or even snooze or chew a toy while waiting.

    • @indygsd
      @indygsd Před 4 lety +1

      Completely agree. I also find that many dogs will anticipate the call-out and watch you like a hawk for any little signal that they can interpret as the sign to come to you.

    • @jfrank9350
      @jfrank9350 Před 4 lety

      @@indygsd I'm just starting the stay at 15 months old and it took just a few minutes...so a trainer said to mix it up...Half the time I recall him to me and the other times I approach him to say good stay break....I think it depends on the dog's mental state too.

    • @kazwhitehouse5155
      @kazwhitehouse5155 Před 4 lety

      Agreed to vary the return to the dog and to either side and call to come to you. Also may be helpful to teach a bridging stimulus ie "good" which is I like what you're doing and keep doing it.

      When I’m able to get a service dog prospect, I plan on using a wait and stay command. That way they know to: wait until I call you; stay until I come back to dismiss you. Although I prefer to have implied stays, same rules but less to say.

    Thank you Tom, my husband suffers from Bipolar and unfortunately my Shih Tzu who is 9 years old has fed off from my husband and it’s unfortunate because Giovanni suffers from anxiety separation from my husband. My husband continues to contribute to this. Example when anyone comes over instead of allowing the dog to adjust, he picks him up and holds him the entire time of the visit. He will not leave the dogs to go on vacation with relatives because the dogs will miss him.

So we are super dedicated to keeping him and making sure he never has to go bouncing around again! Not right! He has the kindest disposition and he’s in there somewhere! I do
    Want to know
    What size or what kind of collar we should be using with him? He’s about 12lbs. He is a little guy, but, can be nasty!! I certainly don’t want to hurt him, but, this guy needs some control and confidence! I want to train him with the best tools I can get? I know you are super busy, if you have time can you recommend the right collar so I can start properly working with him? I’m using a regular collar for now, and a harness while walking?

    I have a very specific question. Every time I bring out the leash my dog automatically gets into walk mode and doesn’t want to train in doors.. should I just not get the leash involved with training indoors? Or try to desensitize her to the leash so she’s not in that over excited state? Thanks! Love the videos!

    AKA, Lokima-Schmokima, Schmoke and a Pancake, etc. He's a 2 year old Siberian Husky and is awesome, except for when he's taking ME for a walk instead of the other way around! I could use some help on leash manners for sure.
