      I loooooved this kind of videos! And The Name of the Wind is my fav book of all time too!! I would recomend 3 of my fav reads of this year: The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden, so magical and whimsical, beautiful writing and a fierce but so wise female lead aaaaaand russian setting and fantasy elements; The City of Brass by S. A. Chakraborty, Oh! The world bulding is strong with this one! Plus... gray characters everywhere! Like seriously... I still can't choose a side and I actually found myself rooting for a character I wasn't supposed to. And Forest of a Thosand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao, a reimagining of the evil queen in an east asian fantasy setting... like... need I say more?
      Hope you get to any of these, I will looking forward to your opinion 😊

    Another high fantasy series I enjoy very much lately is the Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski. It gets more attention lately for the video game series based on it but the books are actually great as well. And since the author is Polish, there are some really fun Eastern-European folklore elements in the worldbuilding.

    • @LouisKing995
      @LouisKing995 Před 6 lety +17

      Elsa Ruuskanen I’d say WOT is more complex personally though I am a fan both. The number of characters you follow and the history you explore is truly vast. But there are 15 books in a WOT . WOT is definitely more high fantasy though, and the authors borrowed from each other since they were very good friends for instance WOT has “The Game of Houses” which is pretty similar to the political “Game of Thrones” (WOT did come first). Robert Jordon wrote a short blurb on the front cover of A ‘Game of Thrones’ and GRRM credits this with kickstarting his books popularity. But they were great friends as I said, much like how Tolkien and C.S Lewis were.

    • @mrblump
      @mrblump Před 6 lety +7

      :tugs braid:, Going to have to strongly disagree on this one. Books 6-11 were slow and sometimes downright painful to read. The female characters are one dimensional and all 1000 of them are written practically the same way. The first book was written as a one of, which causes Jordan to have to retcon Rand's power and re introduce it to the reader. All that being said Sanderson wrapped the series up pretty well and even though it was painfully predictable it still had a lot of fun moments.

    • @LouisKing995
      @LouisKing995 Před 6 lety +4

      mrblump I don’t think they’re one dimensional at all, some of them are perhaps annoying but they aren’t all written the same way. Nynaeve goes from being my least favourite of the women to be my favourite by the end of the series and Cadsuane grew on me immensely. They are however very prominent in the story and exist in society with almost equal status to the male characters, which is somewhat unusual for high fantasy. It’s not all golden but the size and scale of the world he creates is remarkable, and although the final actual showdown with the Dark-one is somewhat predictable, I wouldn’t say the journey to get there is, nor the actual ending of the series.
      Also what about Rand’s power was retconned after Book 1?

    • @mrblump
      @mrblump Před 6 lety +5

      Trajan compare the female characters to those in series like Stormlight archives or Kingkiller chronicles. I am fairly certain Jordan had only interacted with a single women(his wife) for the last 50 years of his life and based every single female character off of her or a fantasy of her. The characters say the same lines over and over and over again and they become stereotypes of themselves until Sanderson takes over the series.
      The publisher had not approved WOT to be a series so Jordan wrote it to be a one off if need be. Hence Rand handily dispatching the Forsaken at the end of book one with god like powers not to see powers on that scale again for MANY more books.
      Don't get me wrong, WOT is not a bad series but Jordan fell short in many area's and because of that it does not hold up against many other series out there.

    I think a series you would like since you enjoy unique magic systems and middle grade fantasy adventures is the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane. This series follows Nita and Kit as they discover that magic is real and that it is the job of wizards to make sure The Lone Power doesn't hurry entropy along. What makes the magic unique is the fact that is magic really fantasy magic per se but a scientific magic. Nita and Kit have to use formulas and calculations and the language of magic to use magic. This series takes to the bottom of the oceans and the farthest reaches of space, back in time and into ones soul. So good.

    This couldn't have come at a better time. I literally just finished the last book in the Black Prism series last night (per your recommendation) and my heart sank when I found out the next one doesn't come out until fall of 2018. I have been reading that series for the past year and I honestly don't know what to do with myself until next year. Lol. I suppose I will have to start a new series and hope that they're as good if not better. Honestly though, the prism series has been a HUGE blessing in that this past year has been very hard for me and it has helped in more ways than I ever thought a fantasy serious would, so thank you. Keep up the great work. ❤️

    I would highly recommend Truthwitch by Susan Dennard. The easiest way to describe this series is that it's what SJ Maas books could have been. The world is incredible and the characters are wonderful. It's diverse with enough historical notes to round everything out. The main draw of this series for me is its focus on friendships. The bond between the two main female characters is the single most important relationship in the series and I am here for it. 10/10 would recommend

    • @thecrazycougar914
      @thecrazycougar914 Před 4 lety +2

      @Alec Pitcher Well, I'd say no. I'm an 18 years old male who primarily reads adult fantasy, but who occasionally dips into YA. Short (-ish) answer: I'd say that the first two books are really good, but from there it goes downhill and turns into an poorly written and edited cringefest (a bit harsh maybe but no one I've talked to about it have denied the truth of my thoughts - although not always agreed)
      Longer answer (spoiler-free):
      It was first after the forth book that I became really annoyed by Maas' writing and during the fifth, it further compounded. The whole fifth book especially felt cringy and porly written as well as edited. Examples of poor writing/editing: her describing characters feelings when telling through other character's perspective, things that makes no sense gets no explaination - people can locate each other across worlds with no other explaination than the fact that the other characters are also being a bit perplexed (or once that the character had a gut-feeling it was the right way), and worst of all, characters' thoughts are lying - for example, someone is thinking that everything goes to shit and later says that it was all planned from the beginning, contradicting her own previous thoughts. The latter problem is to give the story tension while trying to make the character feel badass - not worth it though...
      Edit: and as for romance, it gets a lot worse, A LOT. Fifth book is almost porn
