I think getting a case of each set or how ever much you can afford and then really going hard on 2-3 sets is the way to go. Booster Boxes only!
The thing about diversifying with pokemon is that its also fun to have a diverse collection

There’s a quote from the movie Rounders that says something along the lines of “you don’t hear much about the people who take their shot and miss”. Plenty of guys who went hard on 1 thing and were totally wrong and are forgotten to history or spending years grinding back. That’s the opposite side of the coin so to speak.

I completely agree with your take! Just wanted to clarify that Rudy does hold both cases of booster boxes and ETBs thought (from a Pokemon video he released a few months ago I believe). I focus on booster boxes for main sets and PC ETBs for special sets - maybe I'm old but I don't really see the appeal of booster bundles (although they just appear to be mini-booster boxes?)
Ya i think he did pick up positions in some very cheap from distributors trying to dump them but his primary holdings i believe are booster boxes. Im with you. I dont understand the booster bundle thing either. I guess we will see how they end up doing together lol

I diversified alot in pokemon. If I could go back in time during COVID I would only buy Evolving Skies booster boxes, forget everything else.

RoaringKitty is an exception : You even pointed out how many people lost money for this ONE person to become rich. The Dogecoin Millionaire turning $250k to $3 mil to $50k is an example of what could easy still happen. Putting all your eggs in one basket leads many more to failure than it does success. Investing golden rules like diversifying and not investing more than you can lose exist for a reason.
Alex said himself he buys some of every set that comes out because he can’t always predict what the winners will be, but I think what he’s trying to say is the times you can predict you should go hard, like silver tempest right now, it’s extremely predictable short and long term while dogecoin is not and GameStop is not, silver tempest is very low risk and those are very high risk so yeah not really comparable for me since I don’t view dogecoin or GameStop as viable safe long term investments
@@marcburch2633 Yea I got most of that, and love the channel, but between the video title and the first half of the video I feel like a lot of the 18-25 demographic won't get that. I think fundamentals of investing and risk management should be highlighted more.
Sidenote : People convinced Doge and GME as "low risk" at one point, and I love Pokemon but in a world increasing uncertainty who's to say what Silver Tempest is worth if A.I. takes half of the existing jobs? Nothing is really "low risk" anymore IMO.
My play has been basically load up on battle styles cases when cheap (circa. May 2024)

Big fan, I’m a young guy with low funds. #1 play is Crown Zenith ETBs for the same reason you will sometimes take PSA 9 slabs over a 10

Crystal ball needed! I guess the trouble it, everyone's sitting on booster boxes. So much so just that we will cause a re print as we bought all the stock! Im happy to also buy products based on certain pokemon, as long as the price is right, Also the odd collection box, based on packs and again, if the price is right! Im still new, a year or so. I will venture into singles eventually. My next move will defo be getting a psa submit in.
I’d be way more excited to jump on JP151 if they’d start sealing them again. Probably doesn’t hurt the rip & ship crowd, but I think it’s going to hamper it long term vs the first run of sealed boxes
Psychology (Daniel Kahneman) says that the pain from losing from a big play can greatly outweigh and debilitate one much much more than the satisfaction from winning from that play, which is yet another reason to diversify
Id love to grade some singles but popular SV singles with GOOOD quality feels near impossible to come by.
Ive grown through like ALL the listing for PFates Zard, Bubble Mew, and my newest is Bloodmoon Ursaluna.
I did pull the trigger on one Zard, but had damage on the top of the corner, impossible to see in the listing, immediately sent it back. The print quality is horrendous. Maybe grade some CZ cards or super high gem rate ones

You diversify to spread out specific types of risk. Let’s say I have massive conviction in Lost Origin as a set, which I kind of do.
There is a universe in which Pokemon decides to massively reprint Lost Origin, but not other similar sets to the same degree.
This is what keeps me from just going all in with all of my Pokemon investing money into Lost Origin. We don’t know what Pokemon will do. There is no play in Pokemon that is just so head and shoulders above everything else that it is worth taking on that amount of risk and tunneling just into one or two things. Diversification makes sense in a world where Pokemon can reprint sets currently in rotation.
As they move out of rotation, and the likelyhood of further reprints drops, such as with Fusion Strike and Chilling reign, it can make more sense to divert a larger percentage of your dollars into a single set.
All the analysis and deep dives over 1 or 3 items purchased. That is so common in this hobby lmao

Stocks and Pokémon get correlated so much people think buying all sets and different products is diversification and it’s the same as a diverse portfolio in stocks. They’re not the same.

I never said in this video don't diversify. I said don't over diversify. When you have too many holdings sure it can be safer but it also inhabits growth.
I don’t think anyone will truly be successful investing until they have killed/satisfied the collector part of themselves first, you already have a decent collection built so there isn’t thousands of dollars worth of cards you NEED for your collection, which makes it easier for you to think straight and put more of your budget into big plays, I’m definitely with you though, I will be taking a break and saving money until sets get reprinted or an opportunity comes up like brilliant stars at $150 the other day, if only I had the money 😩

I am just pushing more of my funds into the stock market and building up my cash position well into 5 the figures in a HYSA for the upcoming deployment. I need to get into the Pokémon scape soon again, as the Cramer mentality of buy and don’t trade/sell of my sealed investments are getting lonely. 😆

Temporal is my favorite main set in S&V so far. I think Temporal will be one of the S&V top sets.

I don't really sit on sealed product but I do have a good amount I'm sitting on right now. I diversified but only cause it was celebrations and there were no booster boxes. But I didn't diversify all at once. I bought etbs till they were all done, then I did the Fred Meyers tins till they were done and then switch the the zard and Sylveon boxes. So I'd say there is points when the only option is to diversify if u really want to invest in the specialty type sets. Did the sand with 151. Those will both hit good on the next bday set. Lol. I only do that on the two specialty sets. I wouldn't do that on like evolving skies or anything.

I agree with this but I also think that way about sets. I’m young and don’t have a lot of money so I’d rather take the risk of trying to invest in the best set or sets then buying everyone and averaging it out form the good and bad ones.

@NostalgiaNomics I'm probably too diversified honestly lol. Over 60k in collection value and only 60-70 booster boxes if I had to estimate. Only have one SM booster box and none older.
Saying wealthy people don’t use index funds is just wrong though, look at any millionaire study out there it’s majority normal folks investing consistently and hit millionaire status by 50. I agree with you that concentrated bets can produce a lot more returns if you’re right though, and diversification isn’t really a proven strategy in Pokémon investing, that is a great point
Ya 100%. If you want to take the work 30 to 40 years and steadily invest you can save enough for a comfortable retirement within a lifestyle you want for sure. I thought i made that clear in the vid but i guess it came out wrong...

Gamestop is the only stock i own along with crypto and physical gold and silver - so not a lot of diversity. Would without a doubt put everything into only GME but the reason i diversify is i dont want to gamble on predicting the timing of how things will play out.

I get what you're saying and i agree. I'm also on little halt atm, but i would rather buy another case of Paldea Evolved instead of Silver Tempest. I have this feeling in my guts telling me that PE has much brighter future than ST.
The only thing that scares me is a reprint on Paldea becuase of its popularity.

If you do your research and are confident then make plays that you think are smart. I buy BB but I also purchased 30 metagross IR 178/162 last month because of how cheap they were and after doing some research. Obviously you shouldn’t put 100% into one thing. Read the market, do your research, and have fun-if you don’t enjoy what you’re investing in find something else that you do. Can’t make big plays by being risk averse.

True over diversification can inhibit your winners. But being diversified is essential if your risk tolerance isn’t high. Risk it for the biscuit. I went big in sword and shield when everyone was dumping it. I’m up 50% from those investments. Best investment ride the market up and downs. If you wanna hold cash keep it in a HYSA
i try to tell people tins and collection boxes are a waste of time, and i get downvoted or told im an idiot lol let them waste money , less people with booster boxes down the line and will be stuck with niche stuff they'll never be able to sell

This is so stinking true people NEED to listen to this. How are you doing all this research, all this work, all this time in a hobby, knowing more than 99.9% of the people who buy cards and then second guessing yourself? If you want diversifcation, the S&P500 or Nasdaq will always be there for you.
Alright this motivates me to go heavier in obsidian flames. It’s literally flashfire. Flashfire was a weak set imo. The only reason it’s so hyped up is because it’s so expensive. Think about it obsidian may be a smaller set, but because there’s like 3 Charizards it makes for a perfect set. Not to mention there’s only about a 30% PSA 10 report. Thanks Alex.

Doesn't matter what it is, because all sealed product is a good buy and its all going up. Now in this video, it sounds to me like your saying just buy booster boxes of certain sets. Also, for people who do tons of research or have tons of conviction on certain plays or cards, it was a hopefully helpful for them to trust themselves and make the play instead of always just talking about the opportunities
This is probably the most irresponsible video you've put out so far, telling people that diversifying doesn't work. Telling people that rich people are only rich because they won the lottery and that they too should "bet it ALL on 17!!" Is extremely dangerous. Then again I sincerely hope no one is coming here for actual investment advice.
Haha obviously didn't listen. I said if you want to take the diversification route and work for 40 50 years while those small gains build snd compound it 100% works but if you want to get there faster the way all the people I named did then you would have to take higher risks with your convictions. Pretty simple.
