I really needed this. I was going down a spiral of never feeling like I can catch up to the big guns in the hobby. There is so many cards that I need to collect that I’ve stopped eating properly and spent less time with loved ones. You are right. It went from a fun hobby to an addiction. Thank you
How tf does collecting take you away from your eating habits and family
It can stockpile. Hope you take the break you need!
@@zacharymutter8432 I’d rather spend it on cards then go out with friends and or eat. The sword and shield fomo got me acting up.
@@zacharymutter8432 These people get FOMO and lack self control. Hopefully they learned their lesson 🤷♂️
@@zacharymutter8432 🤣
The one thing no one tells you is “Don’t invest”. Buy for fun and for the love of it, but don’t invest, it’s too expensive.
Just because it’s expensive to you doesn’t mean others shouldn’t invest. People should stop giving advice because to each their own. And stop judging people who want to invest and not just be a happy ole collector.
There's always the c/uc cards for you kids to play
Buy what you like and enjoy.
@KevinCostner471 People want to make some profits too, economy is poor and retrenchments are everywhere
Buying these cards is a hobby. Maybe a speculative play. It’s not investing.
I’m at a place where I am satisfied and happy with my collection , but I do remember a point where I recognized I had an issue . It’s a never ending hobby and there’s a good chance you will never have all the cards you desire and that’s ok
You never will. That’s exactly right and it’s really good to understand that.
@@phillips.collectiblesdidn’t happen overnight, it’s a slippery slope , with the arts only better imo .
This isn’t just TCG advice, it’s life advice.
Great content.
Appreciate that bro. Thanks for tuning in
I really needed to hear this, not just for my pokemon collection, but for my life
Thanks for watching. Awesome to hear it was valuable!
Self control is huge in this hobby. The majority of my collection is just sealed cases and I submit some stuff for grading and keep the 10s... I don't chase much anymore but I did in the beginning.
Yeah it’s a big learning curve
It's really refreshing seeing someone on CZcams being transparent. You can really tell that you care about your fan base and followers.Thank you for your kindness and wisdom.
I appreciate that! Thanks very much for tuning in and the kind words.
Sometimes you just need to take a step back and take a bird's-eye view on what you're built/gained/collected.
In this hobby it can feel like you're constantly one-upping yourself with new chases whether it be singles or sealed products. Most of the time, for me at least, it's the thrill of the chase rather than actually getting the end goal. Great insight and an important message a lot of people needed to hear.
Appreciate that. Yeah exactly you never know how deep you are until you’re in!
Investing adds a layer of fun to pokemon, you buy cards now for cheap and in 3 years or whatever its worth more, if u dont like the card anymore u can sell it for a profit for whatever the new thing is. I think investing is great. Also buying booster boxes to keep sealed, its never going to be worth LESS then what you paid for it (if u buy it new at retail or below retail price)
Correct!
You’re a real one for this video!! HUGE fan of you now! Subscribed and will continue to support you🙏🏽
I appreciate that! Thanks for that, hopefully you enjoy future content
As someone who is new in the hobby I luckily never had the experience of feeling burned out but your advices are perfect for real life.
I'm never really happy but I always forget what I achieved so far, should remind myself more often about my achievements, thank you man 💪
Thanks Leon I appreciate you commenting about your journey!
One of the realist videos I’ve seen in the hobby in a while. Super important to remind ourselves as collectors to step outside of our bubbles to see the bigger picture. Your content offers great value and insight, keep it up Phil!
Awesome to hear you’re enjoying the content. And absolutely taking a step out of it is important.
Just found the channel, and I love it! Thank you for being so down to earth and actually talking about life and not just about chase cards and so on. You got yourself a lifetime subscriber!
Welcome!! Appreciate that my man. I’ll see you on the next video!
Same
If you're a collector, you gotta catch'em all.
The final boss is TCG catch ‘em all
That was an amazing video, well done. So many content creators are just ripping stacks on stacks of packs and I think for a lot of people it has a negative impact on how they view their collection and spend their money. I know personally it usually makes me crave more and I have to remind myself that that’s them and I don’t have it like that. 😂
Couldn't agree more!
Love your content. Take your opinion seriously when it comes to investing in Pokémon card and collecting in general. Cheers from Arizona!
I appreciate that!
great message! as a new to the hobby collector in midlife with a son who is really into it i can appreciate what your saying about having realistic and appropriate goals. the problem occurs when passion is involved and many collecting hobbies revolve around semi-obsession….. you almost need an addiction reality check!
Yeah you're 100% right. It can cross over into an addiction.
Man your channel and content is so refreshing. I love the takes and knowledge you are applying to the hobby, its a great watch! Keep it up, cant wait to see more!
I appreciate that! Really awesome to hear this.
My problem is I got back into the hobby a few years ago and I'm always coming across cards I didn't know existed. After I bought some singles from temporal forces and decided to take a break. I'm satisfied with my collection for now and hit many goals. Gonna skip twilight masquerade and possibly the following set. I needed to hear every bit of this!
Awesome! Good job on taking a break
This video hit home for me. So many times in life I have little victories but I didn’t achieve the goal I initially set out for. Or maybe I achieved this goal but it wasn’t until I started aiming for something better/higher. People need to understand you need to celebrate the little wins, and be grateful for what you have and who you have. If you are always chasing, you don’t appreciate the here and now. This lesson pertains to life and collecting. Great video.
Thanks for sharing samer. That’s so true. We sometimes don’t look at what we have achieved.
This is so good to hear! Helping cure the itch to keep picking up the cards ive been eyeing.
Seems it’s a shared battle we all go through.
Great video crazy you make this video because I’m literally at that point in my collecting where I’m like “hey I need to stop for a bit, other things are important at this point but I’m still gonna keep an eye out for sets with art work I really like”!
Life stuff comes first! Thanks for watching.
Thank you for this video! It's really important to hear this for every collector.
My pleasure! Appreciate the feedback.
I really needed this too 😂 thanks for the great video and reminder for everyone !!
Of course!! Appreciate you tuning in.
Hey, I have just discovered your channel, and I gotta to say, the way you explain things is incredibly easy to understand and so much wisdom in it. In addition, you've saved me a lot of money :D- I was about to buy a ton of Pokémon cards / boosters / ETB`s but your advice really helped me make a more informed decision. Thanks a lot!
Welcome aboard! And great to hear. Look after your money and yourself!
I needed to hear this thanks! I love your content!
Happy to hear that! Thanks for watching
we need more videos and discussions like this in the hobby, thank you so much for this! Really needed it right now!
More to come!
Such a good topic to cover. Self control is massively important to collecting for sure.
100%!
I needed this content, it’s never ending. Thank you man, once you take a break from collecting and come back, the passion will be even stronger.
It really never ends. Important info to know!
Great video and great channel. Keep up the awesome job. I really like your demeanor and perspective!
Thank you! Will do!
Respect an appreciation for your!! Love that you talk about this so that we don’t make this mistake 👏🏼
Absolutely!! Appreciate you watching!
My new fav pokemon channel because the advice relates to me more than others. My chase has always been the team skull pikachu and I can't get the funds to afford it, my mentality is that I can make investments and eventually fund it and I am worried that I will run out of time before it increases in prices again. It has become overwhelming for me and I have bought more necessary. I could probably slowly save up to buy the card straight up and be happy, but then I ask myself if I will be happy after that. You are right that I should be content with what I already have.
I appreciate that bro! Super happy to hear the content resonated.
Refreshing video. Thank you friend.
Thanks Rob - appreciate that!
You said it so well, so important, thank you very much. I only recently started collecting and I quickly felt pressured. especially through this comparison, and all the videos of people telling you that now is your last chance. I quickly got blinders on and didn't even notice that some of the fun in this great hobby had been lost. You helped me a lot with this video, thank you.
You’ll always have another chance. Don’t fall into the trap. We’ve all been there and it’s not worth it.
Great words of wisdom that apply to life in general, and a good reminder especially in collectibles where completionism mindset is prevalent
Absolutely!
Finally, someone talks about priorities! You have earned my sub, buddy ;)
Welcome aboard!
Great video! I for myself tend to look at new IRs and SIRs and think 'omg I really need those, they're fantastic!' all the time, then take a deep breath and realize I have to wait 1-3 months until market calms down... boy, it's tough. But it's the right thing to do. 😊
There’s too many products it’s close to impossible to collect them all
One of the best videos I have seen recently. Loved your video and everything you said is so true.
Wow, thank you!
Thank you for the reality check.
We say comparison is the thief of joy, yet when you told the stories of the millionaires it’s easy to see them wrapped up in it, too!
So many takeaways here. Great video, well organized and well presented.
To your continued success!
Isn’t that interesting…we think we’re alone but it’s a shared experience. Also I love your name haha!
I really resonate with what you're saying in this vid. I personally spend a lot of time thinking about the cards that I'm chasing and not enough time thinking about the cards that I have pulled. Alt arts are great but some of the basic rare cards that I've pulled have some really nice art that some could argue is underrated.
Well said!
Excellent advice. Thanks for the perspective.
My pleasure! Appreciate you watching.
Great video!! Awesome reminder.
Thanks for tuning in!
Very unique video! Loved the insight as it can probably relate to 95% of collectors. Appreciate this type of content! Keep up the great work!
Thanks! I’ll keep it up. Thanks for stopping by.
You earned yourself a new sub, started collecting during Obsidian Flames as a master set collector and it’s been overwhelming because I’m a new father also. Great video on reassurance since now looking at my collection in a new light, I have a ton of great cards I should be proud of.
Awesome, thank you! Great to hear you enjoyed the video. For sure, know when to take breaks.
Comparison is the thief of joy, and that applies to collecting too like you have said. Great video.
Absolutely!
You are absolutely amazing and on point! Youve got my Sub friend👍
Welcome aboard!
there is never enough pokemon cards, just like money so true so true...
Always the next chase
Very good advice. The first person I’ve seen talk about this.
Thank you! Thanks for tuning in
I feel this. I started collecting Pokemon less then a year ago and went through most of all the phases and now i can’t wait to achieve my goal, mastering Paldea evolved and POGO, and “quit” collecting.
Haha the ultimate goal!
As others have said, any investing is speculative, and with something like Pokémon that also has a lot of nostalgia or passion involved, my best advice is play your own game - figure out what you want to collect rather than always chasing the rarest cards.
100%!
Always a great reminder to not compare and love what you have and the people in your life!
One of life’s challenges
great video - subbed
Thanks for the sub!
Great video and found it very interesting.
Thanks mate! Is the Tyranitar in the collection!?
Your best video so far. Keep it up 👏
Appreciate that!
Very nice video. Definitely some of the mistakes I have made and it can get you into a hole real quick.
Very true!
Great video! I actually decided to take a break not too long ago.
Good job. Important stuff!
Thanks brother. I really needed to hear that. ❤
You're welcome! Thanks for tuning in.
Thank you! I just started collecting Pokemon again about a month ago and ive been buying so much etbs... I do need to calm down.. FOMO hits really hard.. i really need this vid
Absolutely pace yourself. You won’t miss out!
I recently got back into pokemon cards and spent a lot of money chasing cards i finally hit the main one i wanted but realized i could’ve just bought it for cheaper this video was really helpful and i think i will start slowing down
Buying singles is always better!
I love your videos, thank you, great content ❤
You are welcome!
Damn your so right about this!! On point. Made me stop and think! Great advice ! I’m going to run with this
Thanks for watching.
Amazing 😮
I just into the hobby about a month ago and have been always finding more product to buy or cards to chase, it’s like there’s an endless amount of stuff you can acquire.
I wanted to just collect the 151 pokemon in the 151 set now I’m buying other sets like Silver Tempest and Brilliant Stars, worried if I don’t buy now I’ll miss these sets that are going out of print.
I wanted to open evolving skies products but it’s too late for those for me.
Thanks for the video! I appreciate the cards I have collected and need to chill 😅
Yep, we all go through it. There isn’t really an end in sight!
When it comes to investing or collecting, 99% will eventually become not as valuable. A long term collector needs to stay focused on the 1% best and most iconic items related to that hobby . The problem with Pokémon for your pocket is it combines investing with collecting and opening. Some times these play against each other so you can not do one in the correct manner. The best investors should never open any product, but then that would be boring. A successful person needs to plan and have discipline based on what they can afford.
I randomly watch your videos now for a month, I'd say, and now I look forward to them because of your clean collecting mentality. Also, kudos to loosing weight. 👏
Awesome to hear! Yes that was a journey. I appreciate that.
This video is a BANGER! Should be shown in every poketuber channel
Appreciate that!
@@phillips.collectibles realized how bad my typing was lol. Fixed it now.
If I’m ever down under, I expect to rip a booster box with you good sir 🫡
Great information my friend thankyou 😃🇦🇺
No problem!
Great video👍
Appreciate that!
ive been collecting pokemon cards for 2 years now and have a collection im proud of phil, but these are the general rules i follow for collecting pokemon.
That’s awesome to hear!
Great perspective! Thank you for the insight.
I started going down this spiral that you speak of.
Time to take step back. T
100% appreciate you tuning in.
Speaking deep truths brother! I got the alt art Latios & Latias but I didn’t feel any happier when I got it, I realize it was just a temporary height of happiness. Thanks for the content!
I appreciate you taking the time to comment. It’s a realisation that a lot of us go through.
I work to buy expensive alt arts from SWSH only because I think SWSH is special to me. I had vintage but I didn't even sell it I gave it away because the art was so plain but very popular. But something about SWSH art feels like a physical copy of an NFT or something because its art and it has "value" but I do it for the Art and It motivates me to work more to get more slabs. My investments are Schwab, TSP, and sealed products of pokemon. My portfolio is 30% each and I put in 20k in to pokemon so far. Probably my next move is to have a portfolio of vaulted PSA cards.
That’s a cool goal. You got any so far?
@@phillips.collectibles not yet still have to save for 3 months
Great vid! You won a new sub!
Awesome, thank you! Welcome to the channel!
needed this. perfect timing
Awesome to hear, appreciate you tuning in!
If you had to recommend one scarlet and violet set to invest in what would it be and why
You know what....thats a good video title and idea, stay tuned...
Let me tell you that the quality of your content is worth of 100k subscribers.
I completed all the WOTC and S&M sets during the pandemic. However, I had to stop collecting after 1 year of medical school because it was financially irresponsible and I felt like it was an escape from anxiety.
I'm a bit disappointed that I missed on alt art but I also realize that my collection is just sleeping in a cupboard.
Appreciate that Simon. I try put the effort in to ensure the quality is there.
You are my favourite CZcamsrs
That's very kind of you. Thank you!
Well said. I have fd myself royally. But I have some nice cards, lol.
Yep…we’ve all done it
I love my collecting but, the cards i pulled myself always are the best ones i got.
Yeah nothing beats that
This is such a hard thing to do. Very important information.
Incredibly hard.
I took a break with 151. Now, I'm waiting for the Black Friday deals.
Pokemon is not investing. Its speculation. Anyone that calls a speculative play an investment is not someone you should take financial advice from. In fact, run far away from them.
Great point, comparing anything with another person makes you miserable in my opinion, focus on your goal instead of others.
amazing nobody talks about this and I be talking to my wife about this all the time. That’s how I’ve noticed all my goals been archived successfully. This is something that should be used in a daily basis in life not only with Pokemon.
100% it’s so important.
Thank you for this vidéo . I finished the alt art SW a month ago and I think to do SM. Bad idea…
Haha nice collection!
Yeah we all needed this
100%!
You almost made me feel guilty. I’m 35 cards from finishing all the Sword shield master sets, but it’s only because my kids and I had a blast doing it. We didn’t do it all by packs though. We set a budget and had fun opening cards and finding reverse holos lol
If you do this hobby for investment purposes, Bless your path. But it seems to be a far more frustrating path than having fun collecting
Also, just got to the end of your video, really appreciate your focus on the love of collecting and not wanting to perpetuate addictive behavior or financially irresponsible collecting. Kudos to you for having a grounded focus on the hobby.
Thanks for watching appreciate this comment. Don’t feel bad, if you’re in the position and you can do it there’s really no issue
I am in this boat right now, i have cards I am going to send off to get graded but after that, need at least a 3 month break from collecting. I have some goals I want to achieve but need to put them on pause for a bit. I really after finishing my goals want to stay more narrow focused on my collection and just have 1 or 2 niches to collect.
Best of luck!

Human nature is to want what you can't or don't have, always thinking its greener on the other side or if you get something you'll be satisfied but you can never have everything. Tangible objects will never bring true happiness/fulfillment.
100% it seems there’s always something more
Yeah I got in and went crazy. Had to spend 6K on some damn cards 😂
Damn what did you pick up?
I got into this recently and spent way too much lmfaooo. Where was this vid like two months ago? 😂
