  • We visited Ray Ikin and his amazing collection. This episode features Australian Chargers and Pacers! The real standout was a genuine E38 Charger that actually competed at Bathurst in 1971 and the incredible story about how Ray found it! Chrysler Australia's Valiant Chargers punched well above their weight with the E38 and E49 Hemi Inline Six powered racing variants, in a fierce battle of the big three for motorsport supremacy here in Aus, with Ford, Chrysler and General Motors Holden.
    At Master of Machines, we love cars, in fact, we love anything with wheels or an engine, from American Muscle Cars to Australian Muscle Cars, Race Cars and Classic Cars of all kinds and even Barn Finds. If it's fast, powerful, restored or hidden away in hibernation then we'll cover it, and in most cases, we'll even drive them!

Replaced the first motor with over 300 thousand miles on her and it was in such good condition internally the mechanic wanted to keep the motor to show it of. One aspect that made the Charger sell so well was the original $2795 price heavily advertised. This was cheaper than the four door Valiant price. I think cheaper than any HQ Holden or Falcon also. Although this was just the basic 215 cui Hemi three speed it still outsold the four doors for a while. 215 still out powered all Holden sixes and most Falcons. Once in the dealer attracted by that $2795 price, some up selling from the base model may have occurred.
    The Monaro and two Falcon attempts at two doors were always substantially dearer than the four door equivalents so met buyer resistance at the time.
    The Charger, I think help by the lower cost fixed rear windows, turned this value equation around. Where I worked a near elderly Press Secretary went with the Charger. Knowing him he was very careful with his money.

    Very nice collection! Pity that not more detail was given to discussing that race going R/T E38. Also interesting is that when they got to the Pacer it was only called a "2 door body style" as if they weren't sure what else to call it. They are hardtops. Pacer Hardtops. Not "coupes" as over 80% of mistaken Australians call them. It's stamped on the compliance plate and in all the factory literature - Hardtop. The Charger is the coupe. Also seen on the compliance plate. In the Chrysler USA naming convention, the coupes were the budget models or low price code and were built with less to keep costs down and the purchase price low. In keeping with that aim they had fixed or hinged rear windows (as our Charger) whereas the hardtops were usually the high price code vehicles and had side rear windows that wound up and down. All our VF and VG 2-door models were hardtops as the body shell was the 1969 Dart pillarless Hardtop imported in from the States. Also , all our subsequent models with two doors (except the Charger) were all hardtops. The Americans did build many variants - there were 4-door hardtops and Dart 'Post' Hardtops with the B pillar post. They also had Dart coupes, with the fixed or hinged rear window. The Plymouth Duster (also an 'A' body) was a coupe body. Most Dodge Challengers were hardtops but they did build a few coupes (economy ones called the Challenger 'Deputy', which had spartan trim levels and slant Six engine and fixed side glass at the back!)
    If you don't believe me, hear it from the horse's mouth, talking about a Plymouth Road Runner Coupe 6 Barrel: czcams.com/video/1MizVAUrDtw/video.html After about 8 min and after the 13 minute mark.
    Our Charger is a classic example of the economy build. The Charger is the car that saved Chrysler Australia - for a while anyway. Chrysler Australia was starting to struggle financially by 1970 and the brilliant Charger concept was built on a shoe-string budget in a record time. Many normal Valiant parts were retained, even the windscreen. The rear screen was a flat piece of glass. The drainage for the boot lid channel was simply two straight steel pipes running from the rear corners down through the boot floor. Floor pan was simply shortened. It had the fixed rear windows in the VH - which became hinged in the VJ onwards. The boot lid was a simple straight and square piece of panel. Unfortunately no fancy 4 wheel disc brakes or limited Slip Diff (Chrysler 'Sure Grip' was only available for the race type RT chargers. Although the 340 and 360 engined cars got a 4 pinion Borg Warner Model 75. An LSD could be optioned though but was usually reserved for cars with Police Pack, Tow Pack or utilities.
    Ray here needs correcting on one point. Our hardtops were not "exactly the same" from the windscreen back as the 1969 Dart. I thought that too until I was corrected. Government had strict local build rules and to meet those we had to do a lot more than just hood, grille and fenders. Our floor pan was pressed in Australia and our seats are Australian. Door trims were Australian. The entire dash is different although the VF instrument cluster was modeled closely on the US ones. We had different steering wheels and steering boxes mounted (sadly) on the chassis rails rather than the US which mounted theirs on the K frame. There are also different aspects of pressings inside the trunk, eg the side trunk extensions. We had the locally assembled BW75 diff (7.5" I think) whereas the Americans used the Chrysler 7.25 rear axle.
    If you have read this far, thanks for reading.

    I recall reading that Leo Geoghegan said that the VG four door pacer with all the Charger bits 265 with triple Webers or maybe the 340 V8 would have been the unbeatable racecar back then. Seems the Charger looked nice but was not a step forward in handling, body strength and weight distribution.
    Obviously Chrysler could not stick with the old body style, so lots of testing to get the Charger size car to work better.

    Absolutely love the D38 Bathurst Charger Ray. My Father was pit crew for that team at Bathurst ( Colin Pierce) I remember as a young kid Dad bringing that exact car home and working on it numerous times in the driveway as they did back then. Dad would change the intake to trumpets which they would change at the track for racing. But put them on in the driveway for tunning etc. Always remember as a young boy that thing being turned on and shaking the hell out of the house and Lounge room window. My father is getting on now and always wanted to find this car to hopefully get him to see it again and have some pics of him and me along side it. Would it be possible for your team to make that happen and Dad to pass on some stories of what this car was actually like with Ray ?

      @@cassanth That a true muscle car should have a V8 is indeed a fact, not just an opinion. The concept of a "Muscle Car", is American, not Australian. It originated in 1964 when Pontiac put their biggest engine in the smaller Tempest 2 door body & called it the GTO. Even such cars as the Mustang, Camero, Cuda etc. are not real Muscle cars unless they are fitted with big block engines. The smaller engined versions are more correctly "Pony Cars". A true muscle car "MUST" also have only 2 doors. In fact the entry forms for many American Muscle Car events specifically note, 2 door cars only. Unfortunately, the term "Muscle Car", has , in recent years & especially in Australia, become grossly polluted with ridiculous cars such as LC & LJ Toranas being given that title. Strictly speaking Australia has no true muscle cars as we have no big blocks. However, since our small block V8s are our biggest engines we can claim our own version of the term & include the E38 & E49 sixes on the basis of their hp (which in most cases is greater than our V8s) but nothing else, period!!

    • @cassanth
      @cassanth Před 3 lety

      @@bazzag7614 At the risk of getting into an argument, you have contradicted yourself. Firstly you say to be a muscle car it must have a V8 and you use the fist GTO as an example. But then you say that certain cars are not muscle cars because they don't have big blocks in them. The 389 in the first GTO was not a big block. In fact, Pontiac didn't have big and small blocks. So does it need a big block to be a muscle car? Because if it does, then your example is not a muscle car. But then you say we can include 6 cylinder chargers based just on their horsepower rating. So which is it? Is a muscle car based on being a V8, or must it be a big block, or is it based on the horsepower it produces. Because now we have delved back into the realm of opinion, not fact.

    • @bazzag7614
      @bazzag7614 Před 3 lety

      @@cassanth No, I haven't contradicted myself, all Pontiac V8s are considered big blocks. It is the same basic block from the 326 (seen in the first Firebird in 67) through to the 455. The terms big & small block are not factory labels they were coined in the aftermarket & Hot Rodding scene & relate to physical size not capacity. The Pontiac engines are by no stretch physically small or compact. When the small block Chev was introduced as a 265 in 1955 it was not labeled a small block. It was not until after the so-called "W" head 396/409 Chev was released that the terms big & small block began to be used to differentiate the engines.

    • @ChrisRobboCovers
      @ChrisRobboCovers Před 3 lety +3

      @@GlennEverittMasterofMachines It's true. Both engines had a different camshafts to the standard Pacer, baffled sumps to counteract oil surge and 35 gallon long range fuel tank. The E34 spec 4 Barrel had a long runner intake manifold and required torque arm under the bell house to prevent it touching the top of the shock absorber, a triple core radiator, twin plate clutch, race spec engine bearings, shot peened conrods and high volume oil pump.
      The claimed power output of the E31 was 200Bhp and the E34 was 215Bhp.
      There were set up problems with 4 barrel carby on the E34, which resulted in flat spotting when cornering, which required the float to be adjusted to allow more fuel through, resulting in increased fuel consumption.
      As this was an issue with a long distance race like Bathurst, Leo Geoghegan and Doug Chivas chose to run E31 spec Pacers in Class C (against the Torana XU-1's), with Des West and Norm Beechey (running under Shell Racing) to run the E34's in class D. (which was a Pacer fest with the exception of a Fiat 125 and a Triumph 2.5)
      The E31's were about 4 seconds a lap slower than the E34 of Des West, who actually lead the race briefly, but the fuel consumption thwarted his run and he ended up finishing 7th outright, but some 2 laps behind Chivas and Geoghegan (4th and 5th respectively) and 3 laps behind winner Allan Moffat in the Phase 1 HO
      Chivas was actually in a battle with Don Holland in his XU-1 for third, when he suffered a flat tyre on the last lap and had to pit to replace it, but still managed to finish 2nd in class. Both he and Holland were lapping 6 seconds a lap faster than Moffat at the end and managed to unlap themselves to only finish 1 lap down.
      There was also a E35 spec Pacer released later in the VG model run, which was basically the same mechanically as the E34, but without the long range fuel tank.
      Additionally, the black outs on the bonnet was specified under option code A88, which also had the stripes running across the boot lid and down the sides. The factory racers ran without this option code, hence no blackouts.
      Reports suggest that there were also 3 E31 spec 2 Door Pacers built by the factory.

You must remember that the regular 2 barrel 245 was 185hp & the standard Pacer which had the twin exhaust manifold added was about 195hp Add to that that the E31 & E34 had a few more cu. in. & the cam that became the E38 cam plus other mods that allowed them to rev more freely & the dyno figures look quite achievable.
