Australian Touring Car history at its best lovingly restored to preserve Australia's wonderful history of locally built cars. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Pa...
    The 1970 series was run under the name Tasman Touring Series,[1] with the South Pacific Touring Series name adopted for 1971.[2] Up until 1972 the series was open to Group E Series Production Touring Cars [3] [4] and from 1973 onwards, like the Bathurst 1000 endurance race, it was switched to the new Australian Group C Touring Car regulations.[5] The position of the series on the Australian racing calendar meant that it was the first title to be contested by the Chrysler, Ford and Holden teams each year.
    A Manufacturers Trophy was awarded in addition to a drivers title in 1970,[6] and in later years the Entrant of the car driven by the driver gaining the most points in the series was awarded equal recognition with the winning driver.[4] [5] [7] [8] Ford works team lead driver Allan Moffat was the winning driver in 1970 with the Ford Motor Company of Australia awarded the Manufacturers Trophy. John Goss took the title driving for McLeod Ford in 1972. Harry Firth's Holden Dealer Team and its drivers won the title four times, with Colin Bond winning in 1971 and 1975 and Peter Brock victorious in 1973 and 1974.
    By the mid-1970s the series, like the Tasman Series, was in decline and it was discontinued after 1975.

    Wheel braces; terry toweling hats in the pit lane; Moffat on the ragged edge; a face-splitting smile on my face for 27:27 minutes. It doesn't get any better than this....and the kids think they invented drifting. Bravo & huge thanks to whoever saved this classic footage.

    Great to see the old racing days. Love the XU1 ... so quick and got a huge following early in it's life thanks to Bondy and Brock. The Falcon, by comparison was a heavy. clumsy car (as you know if you drove one anywhere else than in a straight line). Good to see the Chargers also.

    I grew up with Chargers as my hero cars- can still remember at 3yo singing "all new Charger- unbeleivable!" parroting the ads off the telly. Can you imagine my delight at seeing how this race turned out? What a gift, thank you!

    Wonderful memories - thanks for your restoration efforts, which are marvelous. I love these older motor races when men were men and cars were full of raw grunt and noise. Pity Warwick Farm closed as a motor racing circuit in 1973, but at least "horse power" still prevails on the remaining racecourse.

      The Vals used the same tyres as the Fords, but on an inch wider rim.

    It's a shame the Warwick Farm track is no more, it was one of Australia's better tracks. Love the Chargers as well, I wonder how they would be regarded if Doug had won Bathurst in 1972.

    I remember Leo Geoghegan was asked at a Charger club “Do you think you would have been more successful if your Charger had more power?” To which he said “We had plenty of power. The brakes were not good enough for racing. The pads were so hard the discs wore out!”

      As far as I know the racing Chargers had the same disc/drum setup as my VH Ranger XL except for having cooling find on the drums. I'd be interested in what Geoghegan and others really thought about the front discs, because in my experience the discs on my VH warp if they get hot after long downhills, the originals had to be skimmed a couple of times, and Iv'e been using a pair off a VJ for a long time, and they need skimming as well.With all the hard braking they did racing them ,warping must have been an issue surely. I used to have a VF Regal ,and you could get it's discs hot and they never warped, must have been better metal.

    oh yeah that made sense long ratio 3 speed gearbox top 60mph in first thinking you are going to get of line quicker,dont know where that logic comes from.all clutch work and revving just trying to get away.those 3speed boxes are like a 4speeds 2nd-3rd and 4th gears.

    Badday!! Toranas lost then as did Moffat. Though they did better on the Ford even after smoking them sideways and a couple of big lock ups as well. And quite a few huge oil surges as well. Those Fords were on the point of disaster all the time.
    Chivas was quite smart, not as fast but more reliable. Those Chargers all looked bum up? Yet the otherway as a road car. Someone has stretched the rules!!

    • @robp2831
      @robp2831 Před 2 lety

      E38/49 had adjustable rear spring hangers, and torsion bar front, so no cheating required to alter their stance. I thought the ones in this race were high enough both ends to be rally cars :-)

    • @ldnwholesale8552
      @ldnwholesale8552 Před 2 lety

      @@robp2831 Adjustable front bars for sure. Rear ride height was fixed however. No adjustable shackles. And yes they are cars I have worked on. In period.
      Though my recollection of the then rules is that ride height and springs/ bars had to be standard.
      And those Chargers went from pig understeer to superloose. .Not much in the middle.
      For say a current GpN they can fiddle with suspension to get the things to handle ok. Though so can the Falcons and Toranas so they are still chazsing them. The Toranas are generally very good. Not that many really good Falcons around. They have Mustangs or Camaros!
