  • From the Agartala Conspiracy Case against Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his peers to the Santahar town massacre against Biharis for cooperating with Pakistan Army, many events went unnoticed in history that actually led to the separation of East Pakistan. The first episode of ‘A Twisted Tale of Betrayal’ explores all such incidents and the role of three major stakeholders.
TCM presents an exclusive series, ‘A Twisted Tale of Betrayal’ where a Pakistani, an Indian and a Bangladeshi come together to analyse what led to the separation of East Pakistan in 1971. This three-part series examines the events from the perspective of all three countries and how history was re-written differently for Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.

      2. We did a plebiscite in Junagadh were Nawab and Pakistan representatives were invited but refused to attend.
      3. As far as plebiscite in J&K is concerned, UNSC resolution calls for Pak army and it's immigrants after 1 Jan 1949 to leave so that plebiscite could happen.

I’ll agree with most complaints that the Bengalis had but not when it comes to the national state language. Urdu was and is still not a majority language in any province of Pakistan. It was and is a neutral language and allowed people from one province to communicate with a person from another. Also having Urdu meant that no province could claim that another province’s language was being imposed upon it.
Jinnah had said that while Urdu was going to be the national language, the provinces were free to choose any language they wished for official use, but this would need to be done through their elected representatives once a constitution was in place.

Urdu is Lingua franca but you can't impose it on others without their will especially those who believe they want to attach deeply to their roots. In West Pakistan, it mattered differently due to their close proximity to North India. But in East Pakistan, they viewed Tagore and Nazr Ul Islam as the representative of Bangla Art and Culture, not Iqbal or Ghalib. In South and East India, they still prefer their regional languages over Hindi, and the same is true for Interior Sindh, KPK, and Baluchistan. Punjab is an exceptional case.

    • @wkhan5
      @wkhan5 Před 2 lety +2

@@shoaibazizmeer you totally missed the point. If we apply the Bengali logic at present, Punjabi should be the state national language (as Punjab is the province with an overwhelming majority). This would be rightly unacceptable to KP, Sindh and Balouchistan. Yet Urdu is accepted as lingua Franca by those provinces because Urdu does not belong to any of those provinces. I’m from KP and Urdu is just as alien to Pashto as Urdu is to Bengali, and us Pakhtuns didn’t protest like the Bengalis. Furthermore, as I said, Jinnah had said that provinces were free to choose whether official language they wished. This was a totally fair stance. So Bengalis were being ridiculous here.

Hence there was never a stage where Bengalis wanted to impose Bangla on other parts of the federation My argument is that there is no issue to giving Urdu the status of a national language but the way State tried to propagate the so-called nationhood to all the provinces by attempting to alter the history, we paid a big cost and we are still paying it.

The charge of exploiting East Pakistan by the West is incomprehensible. Governor Burrows agreed with the necessity of a United Bengal. He painted a pathetic picture of the future of Eastern Bengal or Eastern Pakistan, after partition. He said:
It would stagnate to such an extent and become so poor that it would end up as a rural slum. Economically it could not survive as all the coal mines, the minerals and the factories are in Western Bengal, so are the jute processing mills. Eastern Bengal would be deficient in food to the extent of 225,000 tons......if Eastern Bengal was to be properly fed it would be necessary to import 800,000 tons at least. The only main crop in East Pakistan was jute. They might turn over from jute to food, although that would kill the Calcutta Jute Industry.

This proved once for all that "ummah" is only a theological concept. People don't unite only the basis of religion. Culture is a stronger bond than religion. If that wasn't the case, Europe would have been a single country and so would have been the entire middle east.

Exactly, why else would there be 22 countries in the Arab world 🌍? Even the Arabian peninsula is split up between several different countries. Islam ☪️ is the NOT basis of nationhood. Ummah is a concept for those who fear Allah and judge by his commandments.
Not for those who usurp power and are greedy.
We as Pakistanis have to admit that what happened was based on racism and impoverishment of the Bengal people.
As a result the Indians put salt on the wounds and Gen YAHYA decided to force power.
Many of the atrocities done in Bihar and the ones labelled on the Pakistani Army were done by Mukti Baani, sponsored by India.
My wife’s uncle served there, he said we were left without proper amunition and resources, very quickly we arrested and our uniforms taken from us.
It’s unbelievable how he returned back.
However the Bengali people were right to have these sentiments of mistreatment from Pakistan and India deeded on it with hate, and when people see military uniformed personal massacring then only hatred comes about.
What happened in Bihar is documented by western journalists and it was extremely heinous. Millions of people became victims as a punishment for aiding with Pakistan.
Even today those Bengalis who didn’t want this to be split from a Muslim country as labelled as traitors even though they were trying not to be split up, and have been hanged in Bengali prisons.
Even Benglis we’re raped and massacred, however we have to see that’s what happens when we fall into the lap of the enemy.
From a Pakistani general perspective this was treason to side with India a staunch enemy!

Don’t blame West Pakistan for breakup. Bengali Nationalists were planning it for a long time. Now even many BD writers have admitted (including Bir Uttar Sharif Dalim) that Agartala conspiracy was not false. That happened years before 1971. Urdu was spoken all over India where as Bengali was a regional language just as Punjabi, Pushto, Sindhi, Baluchi are regional languages. If for the sake of national unity provinces in West Pakistan can accept Urdu as national language, why not Bengalis? No body was asking them to stop practicing Bengali. I have met many BDeshi in foreign countries and they can manage a reasonable conversation in Urdu. That would have brought us even closer. As for false claims of exploitation by West Pakistan, the fact is many businesses from West Pakistan invested in East Pakistan. Investing is not an exploitation.
