VA Rating for Sleep Apnea Secondary to PTSD

  • Research shows that veterans with PTSD have a higher risk of developing sleep apnea, for which they can file a VA claim of secondary service connection. There is also a direct correlation regarding the severity of the two conditions: the more severe a veteran’s PTSD is, the more severe their sleep apnea will be. This is due in part to the fact that many factors that can aggravate PTSD can also aggravate sleep apnea. For example, sleep deprivation, insomnia, hyperarousal, and daytime sleepiness all affect both PTSD and sleep apnea.

I served in the U. S. Air Force from 1967 through 1978. I served in Vietnam, 1968-69. I lived for many years with undiagnosed PTSD and was hesitant to get help because I worked for a defense contractor and my security clearance was critical to keeping employed. My wife also served in the Air Force and we were married in 1977. When we moved in together, I scared her because I would snort, snore, stop breathing, etc. Again, this was 1977. She tried to wake me up to kick start my breathing and that's when she found out it was safer to wake me up from a distance and not shake me to wake me up. I was recently granted a 70 percent service-connected rating for PTSD which put my total service-connected rating at 90 percent. During the time I was in the Air Force, sleep apnea was not diagnosed nor was there such devices as CPAP to treat sleep apnea. It would finally be 1995 when I convinced my civilian doctor to do a sleep study and it came back with severe obstructive sleep apnea. I have been on a CPAP device since then. When I entered the Air Force, I was near the max limit for weight for my height. I am 5 ft 10 in and have a large frame. The VA says that because of my weight problems in the Air Force, I was denied my claim for Sleep Apnea. The Air Force did not have a body fat check in those days, weight limits strictly based on height and age.

I have very severe sleep apnea. The va put me on medicine for my ptsd but we never used that word due to the stigma it held at the time. I am very confident that this is due to my deployment in 2005 to Kuwait. I was subject to the oil fires and burn pits near the base. Looking back on the whole situation it now makes sense . what are my next steps. I am on a cpap.

NO!!! Don't do it! If you're at 100 now, filing a new claim will only open up your entire Claims File to the rater. That COULD result in you getting nothing for SA and reducing your rating for PTSD. If you're already at 100, don't take that chance.

The contract doctors the VA sends you to are instructed not to give you a diagnosis that would benefit the veteran. I have a claim for both ptsd and a secondary sleep apnea. The VA sent me to the PTSD clinic for treatment and at the same time a video appointment for compensation. I have not received compensation yet for that diagnosis. I submitted the secondary claim for apnea because through my 4 deployments, I had to fill out the post deployment health questionnaire , all four indicated ”yes” for sleep trouble. The question asks “ Do you still feel fatigued when you awake after a full night sleep?” . I kind of chuckled because I do not know what a full night sleep feels like and I haven’t since my first deployment in 2001. My last deployment in 2015 my roommates said my snoring was disturbing and one actually wrote me a letter in support. I was sent to a sleep disorder center for evaluation, I felt like I never even fell asleep during the test. The results came back that I do not have sleep apnea, although I snore and stop breathing, it only happens every 2.1 times per hour, you need 5.0 to be diagnosed. The doctor also stated intakes me 24 minute to get to REM sleep each time I awake, do the math. My calculations are that you can’t get to 5.0 per hour if you are awake or in twilight 24 minutes and hour. They also diagnosed me with Periodic Limb Movement Disorder(PLMD) , basically when I do get to sleep my limbs start flailing and it wakes me up, this “might” be associated with PTSD and my dreams, but it not something they compensate or treat you for. I am still awaiting final disapproval from the compensation branch. My only hope for compensation is that some reads the tests results different, and asks the same question “ how can he get to 5.0 and hour if is awake for 30 minutes at a time. The whole process if frustrating and is designed to work against the veteran. P.S my apologies for the long rant but I hope it helps someone else.
