  • After a couple years of driving on rough roads , car steering components usually gets loose and start to make clunk and rattle noise , steering rack is the major component of the steering system in a car ,
    every steering rack has an adjustment to overcome for the free play developed after years of use , which is called a steering rack preload adjustement or a yoke screw adjustment
    steering rack can develop noise due to two types of freeplay either vertical or horizontal , in horizontal play mostly chances are that your rack gear has worn down enough , but vertical play can be adjusted .
    performed on a volkswagen polo , remains identical for every vw car out their like vento , ameo , golf , jetta , passat , skoda rapid , fabia , octavia , audi a3 , audi a4 , and similar for every car with a rack and pinion setup , just the position of yoke screw differs.

    Same thing happened to my car. Had clunking noise coming from the front left side whenever going through uneven roads. Replaced the lower arm, outer and inner tie rods but the clunking noise was still there albeit not as loud as before. Decided to replaced the steering rack and voila, no more clunking noise! And steering free play that I felt before was gone as well!

    I have a similar sound in my Kia when lightly turning the wheel, or constantly when just rolling/driving at slow speeds, and even use of brakes will occasionally make the clunk sound. These things could also be caused by excessive movement within the rack? 3 different mechanics tell me different things, I’m frustrated that somehow nobody knows what’s wrong with the car but every day I am stressed out over this constant knocking, happening with any impact or movement with the car at all - even getting in and sitting in the seat it will knock from my weight moving the car!

      Sir , most probably your steering rack needs new lubrication , in colder climate grease is much more sticky and hard to work with as compared hot climates , as your engines heats up , your steering rack also get a little warm due to proximity to the engine . And grease inside the rack become more easy to work with . I already have a video on steering rack lubrication on my channel , you can use that as an reference , here is the link .

I cleaned, Air flow sensor and boost pressure sensor, changed the fuel station and also used Liqui moly super diesel additive, but still the problem persists. it did not show any fault code on VCDS as well. skoda service center asked to use diesel additive. but it did not help. Do you think of any other issue causing this problem. My vehicle is 1.6TDI and clocked 1 lakh kms till date.

    • @yourDIYneeds
      @yourDIYneeds  Před 3 lety +1

      Sir an intake manifold cleaning along with intercooler cleaning is what you need
      Black smoke can be cause due to 3 reason
      1 . Low quality fuel
      2. Intercooler filled with engine oil which gets deposited inside by oil vapours
      3 . And that same vapour creates carbon crusting inside intake manifold.
      And if you are going to clean these parts then there is also one anti shudder valve in between intercooler and intake , with 5-10 mins extra you should clean that as well
      Important note . Diesel cars usually emit black smoke in cold weather more than hot climate just due to the fact that combustion chamber remains much colder in winters as compared to summers.
      Hope it helps 👍

      Sir when my vehicle was just 6 months old , i faced a similar issue , on cold morning whenever car got into a pothole ( left front ) it made a clunk noise and after driving for 10 mins noise went away , i tried everything , myself , even gave the car to service centre and they checked it and told me nothing is wrong , i drove my vehicle like that for 3 yrs , and then one day in monsoon season after rain i was inspecting the front left wheel and i saw that the whole fender liner was covered in dust , except for a small spot , which was very clean , and it came out that the sway bar end link was striking against the plastic fender liner only when the temp. Is cold , as the car and shocks gets warmed due to operation the pressure inside the shock increased and then pressure was enough to avoid that impact , so i would advise you to have a good look for any witness marks for impact , so we can trace which thing is making noise due to impact
