Madvillainy is a now legendary collaboration album by MF DOOM, who provides the lyrics, and Madlib, who handles production. The two come together to form Madvillainy.
Madlib is notorious for sourcing his samples from the strangest and least expected of places, and as a result some of the samples he has used are still unknown. This video will breakdown the main samples used on the album - that is, the samples that make up the majority of the beat. If I was to feature every vocal sample and drum loop used I'd be here forever.
As this is the first video I've uploaded to this channel I welcome any constructive criticism you may have. Also let me know if you have any albums you'd particularly like to see me breakdown the samples of.
Finally, I hope you enjoy the video! - Hudba
It's crazy how Madlib picks his samples in a way that makes them all sound like they came from the same band.
Not really (to me) .. they sound like they all came OUT of the same man
@@roderigodelahegbone5815 Pretty much what he said there, killer 👌🏼

Is this just me, or did anyone else think that Dadaelus was in the music video?
@@poseidon6916 i agree with you, instrumental really makes vocal pop but i personally dislike it
I thought Madlib literally sampled Spongebob in Meat Grinder..

HOW DOOM HOLD HEAT AND PREACH NON VIOLENCE????
Shh he bout to start the speech come on silence
On one scary night I saw the light heard a voice that sounded like Barry White, said”sho you right”
Rip raid :P
Can he not defend himself? Thats probably the best tool for self-defense especially against another shooter.
Ankstuh H hey dude listen to Raid in Madvillainy
MADLIB diggin in so many crates for these classics
Nice profile picture.
It's the loop digga!
Stephen Mooney Not all of these were produced by Madlib, DOOM does make beats too you know. All of Operation Doomsday was produced by DOOM.
he indeed is impressive
Stephen Mooney Company flow!
he flipped that sample on Raid from 6/8 to 4/4... madlibs insane
versus beats, not that hard to do. just chop it up :)
That's 3/4 my dude
Still super impressive though
sounds like he just doubled it up
oh shit that is 3/4 lol it's sooooooooooooo good
I was so embarrassed the time I met madlib cause I was spaced out for a few seconds before I realized he tried to shake my hand 🤦♀️
Bruh
At least you met him lmao
@@blossm4002 True you got to meet one of the best producers ever that's an amazing experience
How did you meet him?
No excuse for such disrespect
The only thing i'm asking myself continuously while watching this video is where the hell he got these from, some of these are like weird indie bands from the 70's no one ever heard of. Madlib is truly one of the greatest of all time
Jippe Hiemstra just random digging
That's why it's called diggin in the crates
Jippe Hiemstra That's why Madlib is The Loop Digga!
He visited lots of stores where he bought records and listened to them
Some of this stuff might be considered deep cuts but the majority is mad obvious out in the open stuff if youre into music or more accurately if you're a hip hop scholar. I think that's kinda a cool thing about Madlib (and Doom, yeah he wasn't the one doing the sampling on this although it was a collaborative effort for sure)'s style is that its referential if you come at music at large from a hip hop perspective. I remember that was my first reaction to doomsday; like ok well he just went ahead and made theeese beaats hah cool word etc. At that time it wasn't necessarily cool to just go ahead and loop up Sade. A lot of stuff from that time, like I remembered not really being able to use Vangelis and Phillip Glass samples and then being impressed when I heard El P do it or being fucking vex when Phrenology came out and Queslove flipped the exact same Flying Lizards loop I had on the shelf (I was a dumb kid then). Point is hip hop is a doorway into a greater appreciation of music, dig and actually listening to the records and certain revered producers (who i wont mention here) feel like fucking parasites and others can really be appreciated as musicians. All kinds of music that has legitimately made me a happier person that i wouldn't have given a second if it wasn't for hip hop. Anyway just ranting on this tip cause the internet tends to have a poor longterm memory. Maybe to some extent the thrill of the chase is gone if you're not grabbing $30 of mystery $1 records but at the same time as someone who used to do that the intenet has thrown those loop digger instincts - but fuck that, musical prowess into warp drive. Just be curious. Music is life. I think all the best hip hop producers practice a roll as a listener, selector as well as a musician using a sampler etc as their instrument. It's a pretty decent philosophy in general. Definitely though the whole framework of this shit is right out in the open if you do some homework. People like Madlib and a handful of hip hop producers dating back to Bam etc feel they have a responsibility to educate and encourage eclecticism. Eclecticism is fundamental to hip hop.
It's not just sampling that's an art, it's the placement of the sample as well. The placement is much more difficult than the actual sampling.
With these fists I’m swift to whip some shit up, snatch the vinyl, add a fucking bassline n i’ll, add some flavour. I’ll add some bill Evans trio. Cuz they funky. Definitely rocking. Jazz is the plug. You are the socket . Boom like rocket?

If you think about it, these songs get a second chance in the spotlight

"Eye" is THE most underrated track on this masterpiece by a long way. That flip and the loop Madlib caught there is exactly why he will always be in the top 5 greatest producers of all time discussion.
Eye used to be my least favorite track on the album, now every time i hear it im captivated by how utterly gorgeous the instrumental and vocals are. Its such a great mood change to chill things out and hit your soul, before going back to the cerebral onslaught of DOOM.
Ik, it’s fucking amazing. Eye is definitely underrated. And I feel like it’s crucial for the flow of the album.
Eye don’t know what say.
eye is top 5
Incredible flip. I still dont get it how did he flipped sample like that.
A lot of people will never understand how magical it was to hear this music paired with Boondocks
Boondocks got me even more into DOOM
I agree. That’s how I first head music from Madvillain:
Imma watch this now👀

Fancy Clown was for sure ahead of its time
How so?
Daniel Levy its a song about viktor vaughn talking shit about doom,
doom is the muthafuckin villain and also the main character in madvillainy, not only does mf put it down by writing a coherent story and diss track, its about his own persona,
and the sample used matches perfectly with the whole
“youve been trippin around uptown wooin some fancy clown”
doom is like reenforcing the fact that hes a vile fucker by writing a song where he steals some dudes girl from another perspective, song is definitely one of my favorites on the album and of his entire career
My favorite song on the album
Like, Imagine being so UNTOUCHABLE that you have to go out of your way to diss yourself, and make it sound amazing at the same time?
That's why I love DOOM.
The way Mad chops and screws the vocal melody as DOOM starts rapping is eargasmic
Flip it like Madlib did the old jazz standard.
Meta bar
(Instrumental break)
Strange Ways is one of the greatest tracks ever, pity it is tooooooo short...
SatanDynastyKiller most slept on track on the album
Not too short. Rather Madlib knows how to tease heads
If it were longer it might not be considered "the greatest" track
SatanDynastyKiller makes it even better
Every track is too short
These last few hours have been tough, going through the late kings discography could bring a tear to one's eye
Already listened to both KMD albums and Madvillainy today
I feel the same way, man. Gonna miss him and his music.
The news came at basically midnight, on Jan 1, in our country; I was going to sleep. Spent the entire time listening to his discography instead. Terrible way to start the year.
I cried for like an hour straight when i heard the news
I aint cryin, its the rain i promise
Thought I’d pay a visit after hearing we lost the villain himself. ALL CAPS when you spell the man’s name.

Figaro samples are just absolutely incredible. Perfect melody.
never knew it was lonnie, love that guy
Love this album, Meatgrinder beat is insane.
Dav sound like some Spongebob Squarepants theme
madlib didn't do anything to the original, nothing impressive at all
Barney
Who said it was impressive?
@@Barney-ii1no and im sure you still couldnt make something 1/10 of how impressive it is h8r
Barney there’s beauty in its simplicity. The beat is sick as fuck and chopping it to hell would take away from it IMO.
That rhinestone cowboy flip is next level. Like the fact that he heard mariana mariana and thought to do what he did has always blew my mind.
Madlibs mind works in strange ways
Sampling gives new life to sounds most people either never heard or never exposed to , as a beat constructor I like to find sounds not previously used by any artist .
That’s part of the reason why I like hip hop. All the samples!
I didn't value Jazz until I listened to enough hip hop
“Living of borrowed time, the clock ticks faster That’d be the hour they knock the sick blaster”

That airport love theme though...Curls definetly my favorite track in Madvillainy.
89 Til Infinity and that’s how you supposed to chop a sample. Salute to Madlib
Same
Curls is definitely my favorite track of all time
I think what makes Madvillainy stand out is how different it sounds. Nothing can be compared to it, even to this day. The obscurity of the records that are used as samples on here are ingenious. Madlib really outdid himself here. Then throw in DOOM’s unorthodox, clumsy, off-kilter, abrasive flow paired with his unique skill as a lyricist and you have the making of a timeless classic.
It at times sounds like it's from 2022, and then 1990, even though it dropped the same time as krunk shit was coming out lmfao
I think some of the madlib and freddie gibbs collabs sound somewhat similar
Rhinestone Cowboy brought a tear to my eye when I first heard it

Watching this after the news of his passing. Rest in Power King Geedorah, Victor Vaughn, MF DOOM, your rapper’s favorite rapper
Dumile is resting in peace. DOOM is never dead.
The beat for “eye” is so smooth
this album cured me from feeling lonely in a very dark point of my life. I'm broken because the world has lost it's villain, one who is well-skilled in destruction, as well as building, but at the same time I'm happy I get to witness a legend in real time. See you in the future DOOM, much love!
This made me appreciate this alnum 10x more. Madlibs sampling is insane. They are the perfect duo.
My question is, how did he get all of these samples cleared without those old heads tripping?
The producers dont clear their shit
Not a major commercial release. Even though they have a strong following they have a relatively small following.
Hazael Morel that is not true
Especially the Zappa one. His wife was so aggressive on copyright after he died
Some of them so obscure they can be had for nothing if you ask nicely enough, (have the right connections) others cheaply or you pay x If you sell 100k, xx if you sell 1mm. Especially if they think you're a nobody because your DBA is well hidden.
This hits different after his death
I wanted more of his music, discovered his work few months ago
Rest in Peace to the illest ever

I think it's Hagrid from Lord of the rings
I think it’s from Sandstorm by Darude
I thought I was the only one who heard that...I was always like that's when Lazlo comes to Casablanca...
This shit is still fresh, never gets old. Adding to the voices in the comments seems redundant, but damn I need to express my appreciation for this straight up masterpiece. Bless you Madlib and MF Doom.
