Storing seed potatoes before chitting

  • Today on the Smallholding I’ve taken delivery of my seed potatoes for this year and because it’s so early in the season I’m storing them before chitting in the garage to keep them cool and dark
This is the first step this year in my attempt to be completely self sufficient in potatoes

Very useful storage you’ve got there. Be aware that once all those people have tasted your spuds they’ll never go back to shop bought spuds again so you’re a spud farmer for life!!
I’m not sure those cheap lights are worth having. They are cheap because they are rubbish, from what I’ve heard. I’d suggest you don’t bother about chitting your bulk main crop, after all commercial growers don’t. Why are you planning on ridge and furrows when you do no-dig? A couple of inches of your home made compost piled over each seed and then grass cuttings as they start to grow. Harvesting traditionally grown potatoes is a considerable task and you’re bound to leave volunteers behind whereas with no-dig it’s a pleasure and quick. Actually, potatoes are the crop where no-dig really is outstandingly better than traditional growing more than any other crop. (In my opinion, anyway.)
So so easy, minimum effort and great results.
Whatever you do , good luck!

Yeah good point I may just chit the earlys in the spare room as it’s cool that’s what I normally do
I will be doing some in the no dig garden but if I did all this lot most the beds would be used up, and about 50-60 containers but I have quite a large area that I’ve grown spuds in for years so as I’ve got so many this year they will go in there traditional way

@@SmallholdingUK You don’t need any kind of special “no dig” bed to use the method. Just plant on the surface covered with compost and save yourself a mountain of work when you plant and when you harvest.

I know what your saying but I have a large no dig garden so doing it anywhere else would in fact be more work for me, easier to use what I already have 👍

@@SmallholdingUK Excuse me persisting on this topic but I admire so much of your enterprise and I really think this method will be of great benefit to you. I think we have a different understanding of what no dig is. In this context it’s simply not doing any digging or any other soil manipulation. A better name might be the “Ruth Stout Method”. Several CZcams videos available including some by Liz Zorab in Wales. With your chicken litter and masses of grass clippings it’s a no brainer for you of all people (in my opinion). At least try it for a row or two. It’s so productive, you’ll give up using containers as well, except for some Earlies. I’ll shut up now and wait for your spud harvesting videos😊

🤣 no please don’t keep silent I love the input 👍
I’ve watched liz zorabs video I think she used hay if I remember
I’ll tell you what, as you’ve been persistent I’ll try to remember to do a row this way just to see how they come out 👍
I’ve decided to leave my poultry pens in place instead of moving them and just bed up with straw which I will take out in spring, do you think this could also be used on top of this style of growing potatoes?

Phil, my last 2 spud crops were Desiree. They were all the small leftovers from the previous years crop. It's the one spud i love (mashed). I just leave them in a paper chicken feed bag over winter in the wife's shed (my shed's too good for veg storage 🙂 ). Unsure if this method will lead to less yields or disease but so far so good. I am thoroughly enjoying your vids. We've been tinkering with veg gardening and such for 30 years now and have always dreamed of a small holding. I think the time has passed too, looking at the price of land now. Hey ho. I'm quite fortunate as I have a couple of permissions for firewood collection / wild camping and such. Just invested in some petrol gardening kit and may venture into private work when I retire in a couple of years.

Yeah I love them they are a good all rounder, I’m going to try saving my own seed this year for the first time
Free firewood is a good thing sounds awesome, I love a bit of camping also here on the holding, nice fire few beers and a bbq

Nice one, I saved some of my potato’s from last year hoping to seed them for this year. Anything you look for in particularly for a seed saving potato or will any spare spurs do.
Have them sitting i a tray in my Harry Potter cupboard, I hope they keep:s

It’s something I’m planning on doing this year I’ve not saved my own seed potatoes before, I think just nice undamaged potatoes about the size of a hens egg should be good for seeds 👍
