The Biggest BOOMS in Rocket History

- Space is hard. There’s a reason we use rocket science as a benchmark for anything extremely difficult.
I for one champion all things space and eagerly await every single upcoming space event. But, in order to move forward, we’d better look back at some past failures and see what we’ve learned from them.
What better way to do that than to watch some of the biggest boom’s in spaceflight history?
BUT as always on my channel, this isn’t just a random compilation of crazy explosions, nope sorry…
I’ll be teaching you what went wrong and other random facts about each mission so we too can learn while we watch some fireworks….
After all, mistakes are only mistakes if you don’t learn anything from them.
That being said, let’s see some of the biggest booms in rocket history!

26:27 "We have had an anomaly"
Anomaly. What an interesting way to spell "explosion followed by literal pellets of fireballs raining back down to Earth"

Such a strange anomaly.
Anomaly is a way of expression for mission control.
It's a scientific description. You only state what happened unequivocally.

23:50 He was so excited and proud that it made me dread his reaction given that it's part of this video.
You can feel the life draining out of him
30:12 The N1 explosion released 2.5 TJ of energy, the RAF Fauld explosion in 1944 released 8TJ of energy, and the Halifax explosion in 1917 might have released as much as 12TJ of energy and the shockwave was so powerful that it was felt 130 miles away in Cape Breton, and stood as the largest man-made explosion until the nuclear bomb, the N1 was a big boom but it's far from the largest
That's actually insane though, I knew the Halifax explosion was huge, but it kind of puts it in perspective when you realise that it was equivalent to 4 or 5 moon rockets exploding at once
he probably saw what people assumed, which was that all the fuel exploding would have released close to 7 Kt of TNT. But later investigations revealed around 85% of the fuel did not explode, leaving it at less than 1 kT
The entire rocket contained about 680,000 kg (680 t) of kerosene and 1,780,000 kg (1,780 t) of liquid oxygen.[58] Using a standard energy release of 43 MJ/kg of kerosene gives about 29 TJ for the energy of the explosion (about 6.93 kt TNT equivalent).
Thats from wikipedia.
The N1 is so big its explosion was larger than an entire muntions ship exploding.
That is if they burned together with 100% efficiency, clearly that cannot happen when a rocket comes apart. It was 2kilotons max
@@TransoceanicOutreach No it says "standard Energy release" aka the usual energy release of Kerosene assuming it all doesn't fully burn. 2 kilotons isnt really a lot when you consider Fat Man was 20 kilotons, and the Gagdet At Trinity was like 20 kilotons too.
@@corpsimmons575 that’s what would’ve happened but I think it was 70-80% of the fuel didn’t explode

now we should add sn8's explosion to the list.
Lol
No cuz the sn8 was succes full cuz and the explosion was according to plan
@@sultansuleymanthemagnifice5647 don’t think ‘according to plan’ is the best terminology. If i recall the statement right it was anticipated after pushing the Raptor engines past their upper thresholds, it WAS a success due to the successful self-landing maneuver. The engine just couldn’t pull off another nominal burn to complete the landing phase.
@@hellowrld00 ok
@@hellowrld00 It was a fuel supply issue, not an engine problem. Not enough pressure from the methane header tank meant not enough fuel to the engines, which in turn meant not enough thrust. The engine failures were a secondary problem... the loss of fuel left the engines oversupplied with oxygen, which reacted with the engine metal to produce that lovely green flame (and not-so-lovely black smoke).

Thank you for posting this very entertaining and informative video. You definitely got my respect for keeping out anything that had a loss of life. Like you mentioned they must be treated with great respect to those who where tragically lost and to the families and friends they left behind. That really was a beautiful thing to do. Many years ago I got a chance to fly to the Kennedy Space Center. I was in a CH 46. I got to see one of the space shuttles up close. They where an amazing piece of equipment. But of all the things I had seen at the KSC there is one thing I will never forget. As you walk through the building you will see on the wall plaque’s for every mission. Each one has its own mission patch with the launch date just above the return date. When I got the the Challenger it very sadly was missing the return date. It brought me right back to High School when I was seated at my desk with great excitement watching the launch live. It truly was a tragedy.
