I've finally been able to mount GLaDOS on a wall for proper testing. I had to redesign her neck for a third time and tidy up some joint mechanisms for the servo-linear actuators. Right now she's running a set script from a Pololu Maestro. Still lots of work to do to animate her! - Hry
One thing this video made me notice is how silent she is in the game, you can basically only hear her voice but when you compare it in real life it is possible to hear even the slightest move of her head.
To be fair he is recording it really closely compared to in-game where she is hanging up and farther from the player
You could, theoretically, make machinery that large pretty silent. It would be astronomically expensive, but you could do it.

Because you are very far in game and she isn't exactly a home made mechanism
@@issacgandero3962 it wouldn’t be that expensive, just reduce friction and weigh on motors. Stuff like good typology for internal shells can help

I'll make my whole house into a smart house with a GLADoS AI system, but without the stuff that makes her addicted to testing.

The linear actuators in the neck have to spin pretty quickly, giving them more inertia and making the motion more smooth

The second Portal game actually shows the entire calibration process, with GLaDOS spinning around twice while resetting the position of all her parts.

Im really interested in seeing how she looks with the face plates on, are you adding anything else to cover the back or are you keeping it like that? It may be because she's missing her face plates but the back mechanisms really stand out to me
She's basically unpainted at this point. Most of the wall mount and rear mechanisms will be black, so much less noticeable than they are right now. I just couldn't wait to test her as is before doing more cosmetic work.

To be fair, many people thought the same about a future Half-Life game.
Plus they said they most likely wouldn't make one, but they still did.
So it is still possible.
I personally do think a Portal 3 game will come out eventually, though I think it will be after Gabe Newell's position is replaced (Which is technically inevitable). Though it quite literally could be another 35 years, unless he gives up his position to someone else before then.

it really says something about Valve that even despite them barely making games anymore, the generation that grew up in the orange box era is still attached enough to their characters that some people learn robotics and custom fabrication to recreate their characters.

Thanks! I would love to fully build her someday. She'll have to be a head for now, because even at this scale (about 1/3rd) her body wouldn't fit in my house and would cost thousands if I were to build her right. My channel needs to grow before I can afford something like that.

i'm a literal child and amateur engineer. i would really like to pursue the creation of a life-sized companion cube. as such, 3d printing it would likely not be optimal. how do you reckon i should go about it? thought it'd be a good starter project cause no electronics are required.
Hi Emasti. That's a great starter project! I would start by making a mini version first out of cardboard to get a sense of how to put it together, then I would make a full size box out of wood and make the corner and curved pieces out of EVA foam (workout mat material). I would check out channels like Punished Props and Kamui Cosplay to see how to work with the foam, but you'd be able to make it with cheaply, and with basic tools that way. Hope that helps!

I feel like a Backrooms game with Death Stranding-esque mechanics would be killer.
A lot of the mystique of the backrooms is just that - mystery and uncertainty. A lot of these games tell you exactly how to fix/defeat/dodge/complete something, and i feel like players fixing things or leaving their own notes for others to find would be pretty neat.
