How the Orlando Magic went from a Finals contender to the NBA's worst team in just 4 years
Vložit
- čas přidán 28. 05. 2024
- Dwight Howard's 2020 championship ring with the Los Angeles Lakers must have been a relief, because back when Dwight was the Orlando Magic's superstar center, he watched a shot at a title crumble around him.
The 2009 Eastern Conference champion Magic were a bit lucky, and a bit of a surprise contender, but they clearly had something cooking. Stan Van Gundy's system surrounded Dwight with a record-setting bunch of shooters, and there was a clear path forward to keep that team intact. Instead, GM Otis Smith tinkered with his roster. When that team failed to match the prior season's success, the tinkering continued, and things only got worse. Howard got restless, the Magic overreacted with some all-out moves, and before you knew it, the kings of the East hit rock bottom.
This is the story of a team underrated for its revolutionary greatness, and how they lost their identity and their superstar just 4 years after a Finals appearance. This is the collapse that ended the first chapter of Dwight Howard's fascinating career.

New series idea: rebuild. Teams that were once a laughing stock of their league that evolved into a championship team for many years. One team is the Tampa bay lightning, they were once the worst team in the nhl and are now one of the most dominant teams in the entire league for the past nearly decade
I also like the series idea “Hopeless” where teams like the Eagles and Chiefs who’ve been good and sometimes had the best team in the league and always find a way to fail in the most heartbreaking fashion, until the day they finally breakthrough. Maybe it should be called “Breakthrough” now that I think about it. There are other teams that fit that narrative. As a Chiefs season ticket holder since 1996, at 38 yrs old, I’ve known 35 yrs of gut-wrenching heartbreak and endless hope living side by side. Until 2017 when we drafted Mahomes, and all of that misery, or Missery as we say in Kansas City, MO. Thoughts?
That was my Cubs until they broke the curse in 2016. Now I can just sit back and watch some excellent baseball knowing I got to witness a championship in my lifetime
Same here Doom, I got it with the Royals in 2015 and the Chiefs in February. The chiefs journey was much more painful during the bad times and it was a lot further in the past since the last SB we’d won in 1970, Royals had won a WS in ‘85 but 30 yrs was plenty painful also. You had the most magical triumph of any fanbase Doom, and I’m so glad the royals had just won a ring becuz I was able to enjoy the cubbies win with genuine excitement for a deserving fanbase instead of bitterness and jealousy. Plus y’all had Benny Z after he’d been the key to our offense, what a winner he was man. The Red Sox had a pretty sweet triumph as well. Goddamn, I love sports.
Rebuild: 2019 San Francisco 49ers: they were horrible for years and we popped off last season; a true rebuild

Lol similar to me I picked timberwolves as my fav team when I was a kid because wolf is my fav animal. Still waiting for them to at least make the conference finals again 🤣🤣
The greatest crime Stan van Gundy ever committed was to start Jameer Nelson, who was coming off an injury, after Rafer skip to my lou Alston had driven them all the way to the finals. Smh!
Yeah that first game in the finals! We all thought Nelson was done for the season, and perhaps he should have been by coach's decision!
Underrated comment
STRAIGHT FACTS!! I still hold resentment towards Stan for this!
I will always stay pissed at SVG for that move. SVG is so stubborn to the core. He gets too one track minded sometimes. Alston was playing very well during that run. Then, once Meer gets back, Alston goes to the bench instead of Meer working his way back into the game itself. 🤦🏾♂️

A very accurate and detailed story of my Orlando Magic fan life in two collapse videos. The local media drove our superstars away, oddly enough. The poll about how much Shaq is worth was dominated by non sports fans and the "Dwightmare" campaign was driven by sports analysts who thought we should trade for Andrew Bynum.
We now have our 4th number one pick, so hopefully Bancero can turn us back to championship contenders soon if we can get some 3 point shooters for him.
He won Rookie of the Year. Hope indeed 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Its crazy how they had 2 generational centers consecutively
I'm pretty sure there was an 8-year window in between but I'm impressed about is how they hopped from great talent to great talent you go from Shaq to Penny and then you get Tracy and you have Grant Hill but he never played for us and then you go to Dwight
3, They have Mo Bamba now
@@Izrezar lol
But both Shaq and Dwight failed to win in Orlando even after reaching the Finals in '95 and '09 respectively.
They both won NBA rings as Lakers' players.
JJ Redick’s career is soooo fascinating: he played at Duke, but he never thought he’d aspire to be a star, just a ‘shooter’. He’s been on the supporting cast of some truly great teams, these Magic, the Clippers with Chris Paul and Blake Griffen, the good part of the ‘process’ with Philly, and now he’s in a lineup with Zion. His ego didn’t let him think he’d have to carry a team, and because of that, he’s major underrated piece to a lot of these contending teams. We’ll see if New Orleans will contend for a title with him still on the roster, but I have no reason to think it won’t happen.
News for ya…
someone break the news to him
He never won a championship at Duke or the NBA. Meanwhile, my Heels got 2 Championships when he was at Duke.
CZcams is a time machine!!
The way he embraced his position and using the skill sets he did have to best help his team was wise on his part and demonstrated a healthy level of self awareness on his part. He could have demanded to be a higher level guy and been out of the league fairly quickly. Instead he embraced the role he was provided and did the most he could in those roles in the teams he was on and ended up having a fifteen year career and made roughly $116M in his career from NBA.pay. And now he has smoothly transitioned into being an analyst on ESPN now. A good example of making the best of what’s available to you even if maybe as your dream once was being the guy and not letting that deter you like you see from some guys.
As an Orlando native and former Magic supporter, it's no wonder here in Central Florida they got the name "Orlando Tragic". We had Penny & Shaq, T-Mac and Dwight all within the first 20 years of our franchise. Just being an expansion team in '89 we started off on the right foot. If the Magic organization just opened their wallet, look at what our starting lineup could've looked like:
PG: Jameer Nelson
SG: Vince Carter
SF: Hedo Turkoglu/Rashard Lewis
PF: Rashard Lewis/Hedo Turkoglu
C; Dwight Howard
Dec. 18, 2010 is the day it all came crashing down. Stopped supporting them since that day when they made those trades to break up the team.
And they could possibly had Tim Duncan and if Hill didn't have Glass Ankles been a dynasty a few times
And now after 15 years, Dwight finally has a ring, and he's infinitely more mature then he was when he came to LA. He ain't soft no more Mr. Mamba!

Based on the Magic players recollection (JJ discussed this himself in his own podcast), the main reason the Magic lost to Boston in the ECF was the coaching blunder of SVG *even before the series started.* Even though the Magic was solid heading to the ECF, SVG suddenly decided to make major adjustments for the Celtics series *even before the series started.* Remember what Shaq said about SVG? He was a good strategist BUT he had a tendency to get nervous, overthink, and make bad decisions. That "dark side" of SVG showed up during the Magic-Celtics ECF.

I felt like Rafer Alston was a better starting point guard during the finals, Jameer Nelson ruined the rotation.
Yeah but remember Alston in the first 3 rounds of the playoffs averaged 12.7 PPG/4.4 APG
Jameer was an All Star that season averaging 16.2 PPG/5.7 APG
The Magic were desperate to get him back and weren’t gonna have their All Star PG come off the bench.
@@JWex-jy7sk yeah but the roster had more chemistry with Rafer. Van Gundy ruined the momentum by bringing in Jameer. And honestly, while I like Jameer, it seemed like the moment was too big for him because he was pretty erratic.

Watching their newest video of the Shaq and Penny magic collapse and then queueing this up afterward is hilarious. Genuinely picks up right where the Shaq/Penny video left off. Just 20 years of constant failure
More like 30 years but there are teams who have never made it to the finals. There are 29 failures every year and the same teams tend to dominate a lot, like the Warriors, the Celtics, the Lakers, the Spurs and the 90's Bulls. Being a Magic fan is a roller coaster, not constant. I wouldn't trade those 30 years for half the league.

I LOVE THIS DAMN CHANNEL!!!
Been binging on these.
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG!!!!
Oh man this resonates with me so much! For over a decade I’ve been wanting to discuss that 2009 team and that heartbreaking summer off-season!
I moved to Daytona Beach in 2007, and soon I became a Magic fan since the matches were always on the local Central Florida sports channel (Sun Sports perhaps???) and also because I followed them for Hidayet Turkoglu, being a compatriot Turk myself. The 2008 play-off run was great and the 2009 Finals run was epic! They were a team opposite to weird obsession of American sports where it is not deemed important to be a `team` and rather the focus is always on the `stars` i.e. individualism rather than teamwork. But this team was different, Alston, Courtney Lee, Hedo, Lewis & Howard started games but soon Lee would get subbed on for Mickael Pietrus, Dwight had a decent sub in Marcin Gortat, Reddick was decent as a sub, Tony Battie was alright as a big 4 and Anthony Johnson did an admirable job as Alston’s sub considering he’d be considered a third string PG. All in all, maybe none of the guys beside Dwight were exceptional, but it was a great team! Everyone knew their roles.
All that team needed was a real big man number 4, to replace Lewis, who was an undersized PF, during games as necessary. Lakers had three big men at two positions which Orlando couldn’t overcome; they had Andrew Bynum (probably his best season in his career), Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom. Van Gundy tried Gortat with Howard, and I think Battier with Howard and it just didn’t work. A good PF/C and the team was set for another run the following year!
That 2009 offseason is when it all went wrong! Instead of going for that big man next to Howard, they went and screwed up everything!! Just like they had done in 1994 when they lost Shaq! Can you imagine losing more than half your starters (3/5, or 60%) that made it to the NBA Finals for one man, Vince Carter. Where I was in Daytona, that trade was celebrated but which had made me disgusted. Since they got Carter, that meant Hedo’s minutes were definitely going to get diminished, and pretty much he had no choice (well, more like 90% no choice, cause looking back maybe he could have been less selfish and thought about staying). He was Mr Fourth Quarter that year! This meant that 4/5 (80%) of the starting team was gone! You have to say this because Jameer Nelson was not part of that playoff team. How do you expect to start over from pretty much scratch and do well?!
After that summer, I was disgusted with the obsession with stars rather than teams, and plus I had finished grad school and had left the area, I stopped supporting Orlando Magic. That summer was the beginning of the end of that great team unfortunately.
I remember being pumped when the magic came to town to see d howard

Here’s a simple one: The Pain...It Continues.😞
God or whoever gave you a third chance. You have a WILD young core. Yes Franz and Jalen choked hard last week but don't let last game syndrome take over. The Banchero/Wagner/Suggs core probably the best development core in the bloody league
Looks like the Magic ran out for the Magic.
I love this kind of videos. Thanks SB!
Excellent content!
Can you guys make a Collapse video for soccer? Like how AC Milan went from being Europe's best, to just another team.
Collapse: The 1995-1996 Supersonics
Collapse: The 1994-1995 Rockets
Collapse: The 2007-2008 Celtics
Collapse: The 1991-1992 Redskins
The Celtics didn't collapse as they only missed the playoffs once and are now contenders again
@@ForsterButtery ................Wake me up when this core wins a championship.
Or a collapse of the white Sox post World Series
@@manzac112 eh I could see them winning in the next 5 years. They were definitely close this time
@@leespn4396 nah I feel like Boston is overrated. Too many players who need the ball in their hands to make something happen. There is just something even bigger that is wrong with Boston. I can't put my finger on it tho.
There are interviews on All the Smoke podcast featuring Vince Carter and featuring JJ Redick, which talked about Stan van Gundy's change of strategies in the 2010 Eastern Conference Finals against the Celtics as the head-scratcher. They went away from what worked and it was a shame that team didn't advance to the Finals.
Got here as fast as I can. I always love watching these videos.
If they would've got Tim Duncan along with a healthy Grant Hill & Tracy McGrady would've been scary
Easy 2 Titles the ultimate what if
Prime Tmac and Duncan woulda been scary good
Did anyone else think “which time” when the saw the video title
Ah the 2nd time.....kewl
it’s crazy, been a magic fan since I was a little kid. Remember when they made the finals in 09 I was a kid crazy how bad they are.
Watching this bought back happy
and sad memories about the Magic.
"Vince Carter was past his prime"
That was 10 years ago.
Please make one eventually for the 1990's Indians teams. Those teams were loaded and were very consistent, but overall never won the world series with Jim Thome, Manny Ramirez, Omar Vizquel and Kenny Lofton. Those 4 names alone should be great for any team!
I'll happily listen to anyone from Secret Base talk about pretty much anything. Thank y'all for the work you do
Seth blessed my ears with the intro
Love your guys work
Now Dwight has a ring, we’ll deserved
Howard's offensive game really improved in his prime o the point where he was taking and making bank shots from just outside the paint
Honestly I'm not even much of a basketball fan (as opposed to baseball, American football, or hockey) but all these excellent videos are making me into more of one by the day
This channel gives me life
