And now for the start of the controversial movies! I didn't think this was as bad as people say it was! I don't think it was amazing, but I had fun with the movie and it had some cool moments! Overall though it just felt like a glorified episode of TNG.

I do like this one a lot exactly for that reason, it's a 2 hour TNG episode, with a good budget. And that's really all I need.
@@alexutopia the problem most fans have is it's a long episode of TNG on par with Code of Honor rather than Best of Both Worlds. Again, it's rewatchability is supremely low, even the effects are subpar.

The actor who played the bad Federation admiral has a couple of amazing deaths in some of his films. Always nice to see these guys in random films haha.
Hi Ollie, loved your reaction as always. I actually really like this film. For me it was nice and refreshing to have a story that wasn't tethered to any continuity from the TV series.
As far as the effects go? Yes budget restraints were partly why ILM was not behind the effects. That and ILM was gearing up for the STAR WARS prequels they were taking only top dollar contract work. It is also worth noting though, that space based CGI is far easier to composit than digital effects in daylight settings. These were still early days and even ILM was struggling to get JarJar Binks to work.
As far as Riker's beard goes though, you are reading too much into it. What is going on is that it is a visual representation of his youthful regression just as Deanna's reaction to kissing him with the beard is as well. As for Worf and Deanna? That ended off screen between "All good things..." and "Generations". It became even more final when Worf to a posting to Deep Space Nine after the destruction of the Enterprise D.
Incidently Ollie, you have seen Riker in command before during "Best of Both Worlds" but he is much more serious in that story. This flirty, funny Riker is who he usually is off duty though not much in the episodes you have seen so far. It was nice that he got some spotlight in this film as he is often benched in the movies.
Frankly this is why I prefer the original series movies over these. In the original series the main characters are Kirk, with Spock and Bones acting as his sounding boards. This remains true in the movies. The supporting cast however are rarely more than that in the series and that also remains true in their films, though they actually get more screen time.
With TNG though, it was much more of an ensemble show with every character having numerous episodes featuring mostly them. This however does not translate to the big screen outings. It is mostly the Picard and Data show and the rest of the cast move to supporting roles. Something has been lost and it also results in needing to watch some of the series to get a handle on the interpersonal dynamics better.
"A glorified episode" is a very apt description of "Insurrection". It's not a dreadful film; it just lacks any kind of epic scope. It's easily forgettable.
Now, "Star Trek: Nemesis" is a very memorable film, but not in a good way. It's a ridiculous mess of a plot with a villian whose motivations make no sense at all. It has neat special effects and a lot of action, but it doesn't even feel like a Trek movie. It feels like the wet dream of a noxious fanboy.
Picard references the Dominion War which was occurring on DS9 at the time. Without spoiling it, it is the largest conflict in Federation history on a scale of WWII. Enormous battles, entire systems lost. It was incredibly well done during DS9's last two+ seasons.

Indeed. Imagine whole fleets of galaxy class ships, Excelsiors, and of course, The Defiant which you saw in the battle with the Borg in the last film which Worf was commanding.
That’s what made me so sad about this movie. They missed a HUGE opportunity to do a kind of war film about the Dominion War. And hey, if done right it could have been a huge long term boon to the Deep Space Nine series and a boost to the franchise. It’s been 24 years and I’m just as sad about it today as I was all the way back in 1998.
That's why they brought up Ketrecel White. The Narcotic the Dominion used to control the GemHedar
It's a 5 season plot line, hope he gets around to it 😅
The concept of a duck blind for observing other civilizations was already explored in the excellent TNG episode "Who Watches the Watchers".
This might be a hot take, but I liked Insurrection (and nemesis, too!)
Insurrection felt like a long running episode and that's just FINE because TNG was great.
Alan Silvestri was an established composer in 1998. He scored Back to the Future, The Abyss, Predator, Forrest Gump, Who Framed Roger Rabbit amongst others well before he composed for Marvel movies.
I'm really glad you're not allowing yourself to be influenced by all of the negativity. There are no worse haters of Star Trek than some Star Trek fans. It happens time after time after time. There are still some ancient "fans" who refuse to even consider allowing themselves to like (or watch) anything after the Original Series.
First Contact was absolutely my favorite TNG movie, but I didn't think Insurrection or Nemesis were the dumpster fires many seem to think they were.
Agree on Insurrection - definitely underrated. Nemesis though had no redeeming qualities.
I feel like Nemesis is a slap in the face for people who had watched all 7 seasons of TNG. Since Roly is just focusing on the movies he probably won't twig why so many fans hate it
Insurrection is fine. It feels like a two part episode of the series. The TNG episode "Who Watches the Watchers" would have been a good episode to watch before this (or after for that matter).
BTW, Worf was in another relationship on DS9. The Ketracil White mention is another DS9 reference. In fact, Picard saying they need all the allies they can get probably has more to do with the events on DS9 than the Borg.

This is the second time Anthony Zerbe (Admiral Dougherty) is killed in a nasty way that distorts his face, the first getting blown up in the pressure chamber in License To Kill. This movie was ok for me, but First Contact is still my favorite, this one was saved a little bit by Goldsmith's score.
34:21 Alan Silvestri did the music for Back to the Future in 1985. So yeah, he was around and known long before Insurrection in 1998. The song "Make Over Mambo" which is used in this movie is from the 1991 movie 'Soapdish', which he scored.

OMG, how did I never realise that was the same guy! I'm one of those rare weirdos who thinks Dalton was the best Bond, too.
The salaries for Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner comprised a lot of the movie's budget.
To call this the worst movie ever is absurd. It's a bit like a double-episode of the TV show, one that people would describe as 'okay'. Personally I like the idea, I like the aging cast discovering their youthful side, I love Donna Murphy as Anij. You missed it out of the cut but the moment when Picard asks 'How old are you?' is really great, as there's chemistry between the actors.
And the score is lovely.
Funnily enough, I was watching the finale of 'The White Lotus' last night and there was F. Murray Abraham, Ru'afo himself, playing a big part in that show. Great actor. Great scream!
I'd give it a 6.5 out of 10 myself. It's always watchable.
For me, this film was a let down from the previous one, First Contact. This film is decent, but the action in First Contact made it more exciting for me.
Anyone who claims that this is the worst movie ever clearly hasn't seen A Night to Dismember, The Doghouse, Shark Exorcist or Elfette Saves Christmas!
This film has one of my favorite verbal slight of hand moments when Picard asks Worf what he was doing there and they get interrupted just as he's explaining. I swear I'd seen the film at least 4 or 5 times before of caught that.
Also, this definitely felt way more like a season finale/season premier 2 partner. Like, if the show had continued this might have ended season 8 and started season 9 perfectly.
I do think this film suffered a bit from coming out at a time when bigger and more consequential events were happening elsewhere in the Star Trek Universe (won't say anymore so as not to give it away) and that it often feels like an extended TV episode with a larger budget. But if you take it on its own merits (as you always do) it can be quite an enjoyable film.
Of all the TNG movies, this one is by far the most similar to the TV series. By far far.

This movie suffered from what the next one suffers from, writers who don't know the TNG cast or show continuity and they make silly mistake after silly mistake that take fans out of the movie so often it's a chore to watch. Example: Data does breath; not for processing oxygen but to regulate his internal components, as noted in Birthright. Picard would know that. They got so lazy about why Worf is in the movies that they just gloss over it this time. Georgie's blindness wasn't because of the age of his optical nerves or anything that would be cured by reversing time, he was just blind. Although in honesty they messed that up in all good things too. etc etc etc. The fact is sometimes star trek gives us a TMP or Final Frontier, or Insurrection, it's not hate to recognize this, it's just being an objective observer of the material one is presented with, not being blinded by a brand name or the pathological need a lot of folks on line have to be positive all the time.
This movie had a lot of heart. It was nice to see less action and more philosophy for a change. The biggest problem is the second half loses it's way. The end death of Ru'afo was reshot because the studio wanted a more actiony kind of death. His original death would have had the collector de-age him all the way to a baby and then nothing. I think this would have been a more poetic death. Some of it can be seen on the deleted scenes from the blu-ray. Michael Pillar the writer said of the movie he wanted to make one for Gene Roddenberry the creator. I think the studio interfered too much. He wrote a book about the film and the struggles working with the studio. It's really good. It's called Fade In.
The whole point of the plot was to create a “humorous ST4 like romp”, where the effect of the planet was starting to take hold on the crew and love was in the air-Picard has his older romance, Riker and Troi are back at it again, and even Worf is starting to get some confused feelings. Unfortunately, that didn’t sit with Paramoubt, who basically chopped out all the character arcs and just left us with the bad-alien plot we weren’t really supposed to care about to begin with. Imagine if ST4 had JUST been about stopping the whale probe.
Excellent point Eric. I do remember around the time of this release they said after the Very Intense Borg-centric "First Contact's they wanted to do something more light-hearted but still with a very good message worthy of Gene's legacy. Insurrection has Absolutely grown on me over the years despite all the misplaced hate it gets. I think it's actually more rewatchable than First Contact!
I don’t care what anyone says, I love this movie. It has humour, heart and a great score. The flaws don’t spoil the enjoyment for my family and we rewatch it regularly.
You asked what happened between Worf & Troi. DS9 happened. By this point in the timeline, Worf was married to someone else. See DS9 for details.
I'm glad you liked this movie. They all have something worthy in them, it's just what kind of balance is struck with the other side of the coin. This does have good acting and a plot with meaning. Picard was always good for having a moral center that drives the story.

Re the beard: there’s a recut floating around on CZcams when, after Riker comments his face is now smooth as an android’s bottom, Data responds that “the resemblance is striking”. I can’t unhear that now 😂
Alan Silvestri was well known for his 1985 score for Back to the Future and the 1994 Oscar winner Forrest Gump so was very very famous before this movie.

6:27 after Generations Worf transferred to Deep Space 9 (hence the reference to it in the movie and why Worf wasn't on the Enterprise at the beginning of First Contact) and Deanna and Worf broke up.
I enjoyed this movie. My biggest gripe is it did come across as a high budget episode, and at the end of the day there were not a ton of high stakes involved. I liked that they went for a lighter tone after Generations and First Contact. Losing ILM for the special effects really shows here. Overall a mixed bag of a movie, but not as awful as many people like to comment.
Insurrection has always been my favorite one of the TNG movies. The effects were great for the time, the villain was phenomenal with a relatable motive & Jerry Goldsmith score for this one deserved an Oscar. It's not perfect, but it's gotta a very 90s feel to it
I remember going to see this film at the cinema when I was 7. Possibly my first experience with Star Trek. The most vivid memory I had was the Enterprise trying to beam Picard up while the Son'a ship was exploding. Visually stunning.
You need to search online for the late Micheal Piller’s manuscript “Fade In” about the making of this film. It’s very enlightening. Piller was the head writer for TNG from season 3 on.
Also the interior of the collector had blue walls because the production did not have enough money to insert shots of space as planned.
Yes that's a really interesting insight from the man responsible for TNG becoming the show it was and rather unceremoniously dumped from Voyager when his ideas for the show didn't align with UPN's (although frankly I thought his ideas sucked too lol).
It's not true (about blue screen). You can see somewhere on CZcams some deleted scenes from collector and there are green screens for effects - not blue screen. This blue screen is a design choice - not very good, but there it is.
So it is only rumor which is somehow popular on internet and I sometimes think it is because of negative opinions about Insurrection (people looking for more bad things in this movie). But this rumor about blue screen is not true.
The blue panels in the collector are NOT unfinished effects shots. This misconception has been kicking around in the fandom for 25 years and needs to end. This was confirmed by the producer years ago.

I always thought it was tragic that LeVar Burton had his eye covered up as Geordi, he has the most beautiful eyes. He's the reason I started watching TNG as I was a huge Reading Rainbow fan so he was the only actor I was aware of... I only found out much later that Data was a recurring character on Night Court and was one of my favorites.

I still find people now and then that never put it together Brent Spiner was Bob Wheeler on Night Court. Hell, there are still people who don't recognize him as Dr Okun in Independence Day, though at least there he was pretty much the polar opposite of Data.
@@inarar5334 Back in the day when TNG was still running new episodes, I told my friend who was a Star Trek nerd like me that the actor who played Data was the same actor who was Bob Wheeler on Night Court. He wouldn't believe me. He refused.
I also had another friend who was convinced that in Star Trek VI General Chang was played by Patrick Stewart. I told him, no, it was Christopher Plummer, and _he_ wouldn't believe me.
So many frustrating arguments would have been avoided if we had internet then like we do today...
I mean, Star Trek got a lot of different roles from the same actors, but I seriously doubt they'd have had any main cast member play a role that wasn't at least related (like Spiner and the various Soongs over the years, or Michael Dorn as Worfs grandfather in Undiscovered Country). Though of course the funny part there is UC reused David Warner who had just played Talbot in FF (and of course later he gives Picard some grief over lights as a Cardassian with a sadistic streak).
I was just going to mention David Warner being in 2 Star Trek movies on a row as different characters.
Kinda like in the Bond series Joe Don Baker plays a villain in one film and then a couple movies later is playing a good guy in a couple movies.

Out of all The Next Generation movies, this movie feels more like a Star Trek television episode than the rest of them. That's NOT a dig at the other movies, because each movie has its strength.
Fun Fact: The manual control column that Commander Riker uses to steer the Enterprise is a modified Gravis Thunderbird PC joystick.
Gordon's Alive Fact: Sir Patrick Stewart wanted his life-long friend Brian Blessed to play Admiral Dougherty. Blessed did over 800 hours of astronaut training at Star City in Russia, and remains the #1 civilian on the waiting list for the International Space Station.
Field Trip Fact: On the Blu-ray commentary, Jonathan Frakes says that for the scene where Adhar Ru'afo (F. Murray Abraham) has his skin folded over his head, producer Rick Berman and several of the make-up artists had visited a plastic surgery clinic to watch surgeries being performed to get ideas for that particular scene.
Oh god, Brian Blessed as Dougherty? I mean, he's a fantastic actor but casting him would have changed the Character completely (unless Blessed had been told to keep it down a notch! :D)
Now that I think about it, Blessed would have been a *fantastic* Klingon.
People give this one hate, but I never minded it. Really, the best way to look at it as an episode. It really felt more like a decent 2 part series episode. It looks a lot better when you think of it that way.
One 'first' in this film was that we get to see the Enterprise's captain's yacht emerge from the bottom of the saucer section. There had been one on the Enterprise-D (and another on Voyager) but we never got to actually see them. IIRC they even used the name for the yacht that Patrick Stewart had always wanted, "Calypso" (named after Jacques Cousteau's ship I think).
We also get to see the Enterprise's "Manual Thrustmaster Joystick" helm control which was just.....aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh *infinite screams*
Actually, the new yacht is the Cousteau.
The old, unseen one, is the Calypso. And yes, it was Cousteau's ship (don't believe me? See the Epic Rap Battle video!)
Patrick Stewart was really good in A Christmas Carol.
I love how Picard can just say to Riker "Number 1" and Riker knows exactly what Picard wants.

A lot of criticism comes from the overall problem with the movies in that they aren't all bad bad per se, but just not as good and kinda serviceable. The big knock I remember when Insurrection came out was that it felt more like an episode plot than movie.
Hey, even Nemesis has several good minutes.
The Village People are always cool and made some of the best music.
Alan Silvestri composed the cores for the entire Back to the Future film series, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, and Forrest Gump, all before Star Trek: Insurrection, and Cast Away and The Polar Express after.
Riker's best captain moment was in "The Best of Both Worlds": "Mr. Worf, FIRE!"

Remember Will Decker and Ilia from The Motion Picture? Riker and Troi are what they had intended to do with them originally when they were thinking to do the Phase 2 series that became TMP. They even have very similar scenes when they meet again on the Enterprise.
Nemesis is awesome. The ship battle sequences are top tier.
I know I will probably get heat for this but this is actually one of my favorite Star Trek movies. I grew up in a extremely wonderful time because I have seen all nine Star wars episodes on the big screen, I also saw the three Lord of the rings films on the screen and I got to see every Star Trek movie on the big screen as well including the newer ones with Chris pine. I know I might be in a majority being a tracker and a Star wars fan but I do love both of them for various reasons. It was an amazing part of my childhood and young adulthood. Now at 53 it is enjoyable to watch a young person seeing them for the first time and enjoying them as I did. I think I enjoyed this movie so much because of the moral quandary that it proposes. Alan Silvestri's big break was in 1984 with the extremely successful adventure ‘Romancing the Stone’ for Robert Zemeckis, and he would become a film score superstar the next year when the two collaborated on ‘Back To the Future.’ He had been an A-list composer with several Oscar nominations, by the time of ‘Insurrection.’
The “Makeover Mambo” Picard dances to was a piece of music from Alan Silvestri's score from the (mostly hilarious, also somewhat dated) comedy ‘Soapdish,’ which was also a Paramount property, thus making it easy to license.
The villain in this movie is F. Murray Abraham. The same guy who was in Scarface who gets hung from the helicopter while visiting Sosa.
"I really liked the Village People!" sounds like a different village people than you meant. 🤣
Anytime Riker yells "Red alert, all hands battlestations!"... 👌
I always enjoyed the emotions of this movie. And the music was amazing!! I always thought that they could actually control time to an extent. They could slow it down. An ability they learned from either being alive for so long, or it was something they could channel from the powers of the planet around them.
I always thought they could have taken the Gilbert and Sullivan joke a bit further with Worf:
Worf: "I have not had an opportunity to meet all the new crew members since I came onboard."
Picard: "They're composers, Worf. From the 20th century."
Worf: "So.. they are time travellers!"
Picard: "... Never mind"
that moment with geordi really does make me cry. it's the music that does it.

Many are encouraging you to hit a Star Trek: Deep Space 9 episode or two. This is a bit more tricky, as DS9 was the first Star Trek series that started to use ongoing storylines mid-way through the series, where you have to watch the previous episodes to understand them (this is because DVD sets came onto the market, and people could "catch up" and watch all the episodes, which was hard to do before). Unfortunately for you, that makes some of the best episodes impractical for you to sample (but not impossible)
With that said, the first season episode "Duet" is one that you don't need much backstory to, and is a superior episode. The only thing you really need to know is that the space station that they are on is near a non-federation ally world (Bajor), that was previously occupied by another race called the Cardassians (think: SpaceNazis).
There. You are good to go, if you choose.
I LOVED DS9s Duet. With its intense acting, it had a Hannibal Lecter/Clarice Starling vibe to it.
I fish at the lake in this movie. It's Convict Lake, across the highway from Mammoth Yosemite Airport in California. Every time I go there I look for the cloaked ship lol...
Definitely one of the more underrated of the franchise. It's a good time for sure.

The actor that played Artim is Michael Welch who went on to play Mike Newton on the Twilight series.
I think Insurrection feels like a really good episode of the TV show but fans want higher stakes for a movie they had to wait 3+ years for. Plus this had to follow First Contact so it had a lot of expectations on it.
I’m one of the few who actually really likes Nemesis so I’m very curious what you think of it.
4:17 “We are your Gods! Bow to us!” That’s basically the plot of Stargate. A pretty good movie. Another one with music by Jerry Goldsmith. Serves as a good standalone adventure movie. You can go on to watch the TV show franchise afterwards if you want to. It is by no means necessary.
Antony Zerbe, who plays Admiral Dougherty and had his face stretched also played Milton Krest who was the minor villain in Licence to Kill who got exploded inside that pressure tank lol
Watching this in theatres, the preview in front of this movie was the first trailer for Star Wars episode I, the first SW movie in 16 years. I almost wonder if the excitement from that preview overshadowed ST: Insurrection.

Nemesis, however... ick.
Ollie, if you're going to watch DS9, just be aware that it has longer running story lines than TNG, so it might make more sense to watch whole seasons minus the incongruous episodes. It's a very bingeable show, though, so that really shouldn't be any hardship. You could even do three or four episodes per reaction video, since they're pretty short.
FYI... Much of it was filmed in Lone Pine, just off of Highway 395 through the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains, north of Los Angeles. A fantastic road trip I've been on a few times.

The shaved beard is kinda an effect of the planet causing people to feel and/or act younger. He didn't have a beard when he was young, so because he was feeling the effects and was feeling a bit more like his younger self he decided to look more like his younger self. The beard is back next movie.
It was also meant to show how little of a push both of them needed to rekindle their romance. I imagine that after "I kiss you and you say yuck?" Riker offered to shave to show he was serious, and Troi countered with what they ended up doing.
Watch the behind the scenes of this movie. You will learn that there's only one CGI thing in the whole film. That's the Palm pet. Everything else is models or animated lasers and explosives. PS CGI stands for Computer Generated Imagery. It does not mean 'non-practical effect'.
In fact CJ was not heavily used at any of the Star Trek movies until Nemesis.
The scene here 14:20 with Geordi is one of my favorites in the film series
I think this is around the middle of all Star Trek movies, directed well with a good interesting story.
As far as I know, the Blue Walls on the Collector-Set were actual Bluescreens and the intention was to replace them with an outside view in post-production but they hadn't enough money to complete the effects.
Speaking of effects, _Insurrection_ was the first to be (almost) all-CGI. And I admit, while the quality of the graphics is very uneven overall, there are a couple of shots that aged really well (I especially like 20:34, it just *screams* "Payback time, bitches!")

F. Murray Abraham played the villain Ru'afo. If you want to see him in his prime as a wonderfully deep and much more subtle villain in an Oscar winning role you should add "Amadeus" to your review list.

Alan Silverstri's first film score was for "The Doberman Gang" in 1976 and if you don't know that one, this one I'm sure you've heard of "Back to the Future" (1985) so no I highly doubt Alan Silvestri was an apprentice of Jerry Goldsmith for a 1998 movie!
6:00 the card scene "🎵come out come out wherever you are 🎵" is not creepy. It's actually from a song from the movie "The wizard of Oz".
Not terribly fond of the movie, but the "British Tar" sing-along is one of my favorite Trek moments.

34:40 by 98, Alan Silvestri scored the Back to the Future trilogy. Not to mention Predator and…the um, super mario movie. He just did the best he could with what he was given.
Poor Anthony Zerbe. You've now seen him die twice in films by having gruesome things happen to his head (also License To Kill).
Visual effects for the this film was done by Santa Barbara Studios they mainly worked on Voyager and Deep Space 9 around this time, for a TV show they did some excellent work. ILM were busy with Deep Impact and Star Wars, the next film digital domain took over the effects and I find some of the effects shots out of the place in that movie, some excellent, but some ropy, especially the choice of colours that was used.
Just binged your Trek content. You mentioned early on the (maybe overblown) competitiveness between Trek and Star Wars fans which got me thinking about it. Growing up I was an absolute Star Wars fanatic. I liked Star Trek too (First Contact came out when I was a little kid and was my first real exposure) but just kind of as an aside, not really something I was interested in. Had a Star Wars themed bar mitzvah. All the new releases at midnight, all that stuff. But as I've gotten older and also more and more invested in human and civil rights, politics, social justice, and history, Star Trek has become my favorite of the two. Star Wars is an entertaining fantasy that I still love (currently halfway through Andor which is so good), but Star Trek is an aspiration. It's an ideal that humanity can strive toward, a fantastical setting that contains within it a genuinely achievable future for humanity if we make the effort and unite in its pursuit. I love Star Trek so much because they've actively pursued since the very beginning ideas and notions that today would be dismissed by many as "woke" or something similar. They've never been afraid to say from the very beginning "humanity is in trouble, humanity is on a destructive path, humanity is getting things wrong, but we have the capacity to be so much greater"

You saw the Admiral actor in your James Bond watch as he was in Timothy Dalton's License to Kill and he died in a similar manner: he was put in a pressure tank and his head expanded and exploded.
That was an ability that she was able to accomplish being at her age known that planet, so yes she actually had powers

It's an OK movie, especially if you aren't familiar with _Who Watches The Watchers_ , but I'd argue that while the movie tackled the concept with a bigger budget (and put a fresh twist on it too by having the 'primitive' species actually be very advanced but just choosing not to use it), the TV episode was more charming and compelling overall. I also think this movie could've been better if it had explored more of the question of who was really in the right, it could've framed the plot as more of a moral quandry instead of just the people on the planet being antagonized by villains. Not bad but also left a lot on the table IMO. The mountain lake they filmed at is Lake Sabrina in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California!

Wasn't that music at the opening of the movie beautiful? I like how it opened differently from the other Trek movies, with credits over the village, not space.
I don't care what people say, I liked both Insurrection and Nemesis!

I thought I had seen this movie before, but I’m one hour in and it all seems new to me.
I'm not one for Reaction videos as I've mostly found them so obviously fake and insincere but, as a Trekkie, I saw this and thought "let's have a nosey"...

Firstly, loving the TOS t-shirt... But I actually really like the format of your video too - intro,view, and after-thoughts breakdown.
So many comments below already resonate with me, that it would be pointless to repeat them, so to summarise my own thoughts and feelings - There are no bad Classic/TNG Trek movies ; as each and everyone of them has something of merit; certainly, some are realised on-screen in a better or worse fashion, but there is a core of goodness to them all.
So now I am going to have to spend my weekend re-watching these films along with you, as I trawl through your back-catalogue of Trek videos.

This one isn't bad, it's true. Nemesis, on the other hand, is genuinely irredeemable.

I love Safe House. It's criminally overlooked. I would also add the Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts movie Conspiracy Theory. But not Green Room. Everyone says it's great, but I hated every second of it.

I can’t believe that Lack of Beard theory has been staring me in the face my entire life and I never put it together. From the mouth of babes...
I remember Star Trek: First Contact fondly as being the peak of the franchise. The TNG crew was coming off of a fun, successful movie; things were starting to kick off on Deep Space 9; and Voyager was off and running. Unfortunately, I feel like Star Trek: Insurrection was the beginning of the end for "old Star Trek." There were still some great moments to come on DS9 and, to a lesser-degree, Voyager. However, this movie pretty much killed any momentum the film series had going (the TNG movies would die altogether shortly after), Voyager was OK but overall a disappointment, and Enterprise eventually found their footing but it was way too little way too late (killing Star Trek on TV for over a decade). But in my opinion, the decline of Star Trek can be traced back to this movie. At a point when the franchise was red hot; they turned in such a bland, underwhelming effort that it did measurable damage to the franchise. It started a downward trend that I would argue Star Trek still hasn't been able to climb back from.
The beat after Admiral Dougherty's death wasn't to mourn him, I don't think, but to note where he ended up. Ugly murdered alone in a back room of an alien ship. The path to Hell is paved with good intentions.
