Brandon actually reprised this role recently in the Arrowverse and it was awesome. He didn't quite fill Chris' shoes in this movie but he did great and he most certainly did fill them in that crossover. There was another Superman series from the 90s, Lois & Clark and also a Superboy series that essentially inspired Smallville.

Brandon Routh is so unappreciated in his role as Superman, it's a shame. He's been in some really good films since and has been in one of the DC live-action series as the Atom, and had a Superman cameo as well. James Marsden (Cyclops from the X-Men films) is another actor that slips under the radar without getting due recognition. Being a fan of the Syfy version of Being Human, it was great to see Sam Huntington in this role - he and Brandon Routh are friends in real life.

You referred to the 4th movie, but the actual one it pretty much directly references is the first movie. The first time he shows up he saves Lois from an air travel accident and gives her the "I hope this doesn't put you off flying, statistically speaking it's the safest way to travel." That's why he says "still the safest way" as he's kinda weirdly flirting with Lois and is basically saying "hey, remember when we met?"

  • @richardb6260
    @richardb6260 Před 2 lety +7

The movie peaked with the space shuttle sequence. It never gets better than that.
The shot where Superman lifts a car over his head is a recreation of the cover of Action Comics #1, the first appearance of Superman.

  • @MAMoreno
    @MAMoreno Před 2 lety +15

In regards to continuity, this film may actually come shortly before Superman III instead of replacing it on the timeline. This idea is strongly implied by the CW crossover story Crisis on Infinite Earths, where Brandon Routh reprises his role as the 1978-2006 Superman and makes an allusion to the junkyard fight. Considering that Lois is barely in Superman III, there's no reason to think that she couldn't be with Richard in that film. (That would also explain why Clark would be open to dating Lana.)
The film Supergirl could easily fit within the five-year gap between Superman II and Superman Returns, as the film explicitly states that Superman is off-planet at the time. And since Crisis states that Routh's Superman went on to marry Lois, we can assume that Richard left the picture somehow before Superman IV. The fate of their child is currently unknown.
And since you asked about TV shows that came between The Quest for Peace and Superman Returns, I'll inform you that there were three live-action shows: Superboy, Lois & Clark, and Smallville. The first series, Superboy, was made by the producers of the first three Reeve films and Supergirl. It is not in continuity with the films, but it shares numerous similarities. Lois & Clark is in a distinct continuity, and it is the only proper Superman show of the three. Finally, Smallville does the same thing Superboy did: it draws on iconography from the Reeve films while existing in a separate timeline.

The bartender was played by the actor who played Jimmy Olsen ion the 1950s TV series, and Lex's sugar mama at the beginning was played by the same woman who was Lois Lane on the TV series.
They did such a good job matching the Christopher Reeve films. I am so sad that Brandon Routh only got to play this version of Superman only one more time (so far). Christopher Reeve's widow personally gave Routh her approval. Bryan Singer said he wouldn't do the film without rights to the John Williams score.

A lot f people hated on that movie, but I liked it. Brandon Routh really embodied the Spirit of Christopher Reeve. I didn’t care for the choice for Lois Lane or Lex Luthor , but other than that I thought it was pretty cool. Bad reviews I think spoiled our chances of getting a second Brandon Routh as Superman movie. Very disappointed that WB made that decision and decided to reboot with Henry Cavill . No disrespect to Henry , he did a great job, but now it seems even he’s out of any future movies. I think that the music you call the Lois Lane theme is officially titled “Can You Read My Mind”.

I can't stand the "he only lifts stuff" haters. The story was well crafted and flows together very well. I hope it gets more appreciated with time, but with Singer/Spacey I doubt it will be watched rationally as a movie. So a story about Superman’s uncle saving their family in a pocket dimension only to have Supergirl come to earth (directly from a Krypton city) to fight magic from an evil female Dr. Strange. Supergirl (1984) was an okay, not to bad movie considering there wasn’t a lot to choose from👍

To me, Christopher Reeve IS Superman! Having said that, I feel like Brandon Routh was perfectly cast as Christopher Reeve. I'm so glad you loved Returns as much as I did when I saw it in IMAX 3D on the day it premiered. The movie had its problems, but they nailed Superman/Clark Kent and the overall feeling and atmosphere of the original films. I remember most people disliking Returns because they wanted to see Superman fighting enemies. This film was meant to be a reintroduction to the characters and Metropolis, and the sequel was going to be more action-packed with a lot of battles. Obviously, it never happened. The movie actually did pretty well at the box office, but not as well as expected, so they never gave us the sequel we were craving! By this time, we already had the X-Men films and a ton of Batman films, so audiences were used to darker, grittier comic book franchises and were not appreciative of the warmth and saccharine qualities of Superman up to that point. Shame. I felt and still feel terribly for Brandon Routh. He thought he was in it for the long haul. Henry Cavill is a great actor, but his Superman films lack all of the heart of the original films. Not to mention no John Williams theme!

You made me enjoy this movie through your enthusiasm. I hated this movie at the time it came out because he was so "emo". The scene where he showed up at Lois' house and eavesdropped on her and watched her with his x-ray vision seemed so stalker-ish. Superman shouldn't be an emo stalker.
Alot of people were disappointed that he never punched anything. This was partly why the Man of Steel movie had Henry Cavill punching the heck out of bad guys.
I enjoyed these action set-pieces. I also enjoyed the cameos by the actors from the 1950s "The Adventures of Superman" (TAOS) TV Show. I enjoyed this film a great deal when it first came out in 2006, it's a lovely story. A lot of fans complained that there were no superfights in this movie, but that was also true of the original 1978 Christopher Reeve film. I thought Brandon Routh was magnificent as Superman, and I was so pleased to see him reprise the role on special episodes of The CW "Arrowverse" TV series in more recent years. I think he's an underrated actor.
Unfortunately, what troubles me about this film today is the predatory nature of director Bryan Singer and Lex Luthor actor Kevin Spacey. I always try to separate art from the artist, but these two are notoriously bad people. That's not a judgment call on people who enjoyed the film, far from it, it is very well made; these are matters that have come to bother me personally in the years since it was filmed and released.

I unfortunately agree that it's tough to watch Bryan Singer movies now and not think about everything we know. It's even tougher when Kevin Spacey's in it. It sucks, because he's a great director and made some movies that are otherwise staples in cinema history, as well as favourite movies of mine, like Usual Suspects and X2. But it's like anytime you see Harvey Weinstein's name in the opening credits of a movie, and you just kinda can't help but think for at least the next little bit... Brandon Routh always looked way younger than Christopher Reeve, yet I believe they were both the same age when they took their respective roles. The plane sequence is what Superman is all about! If there's a bank robbery you call another hero. But when you need saving from some truly overwhelming disaster....that's a job for Superman! At the time many complained the movie was too nostalgic and didn't have enough action....well, be careful what you wish for because then you get mindless crap like Batman v. Superman.

Okay, deep breath (0:22) *Reasons you should watch Supergirl (1984)* on your channel:
    1. Made by *the same production team* as Superman 1-3. It’s really film #3.5 in the Reeve series.
    2. The flying effects are *better than any of the Christoper Reeve* films, including some *amazing* wire work.
    3. The Zoptic projection effects in Supergirl are *miles beyond* the blue screen effects in Superman 4.
    4. There are *characters that cross over* from the Reeves films into Supergirl. It’s set in the same universe.
    5. Features arguably *the best villain* in the series. Faye Dunaway delivers the campiest most arch-villain performance ever, you have to see it to believe it.
    6. The villain sidekick in this film is *a lot funnier* than Lex’s Otis.
    7. Like Superman 2, it has *multiple versions* & an interesting production history (3 in this case, Tri-Star 105 min, International 124 min, directors cut 138 min - would recommend the “int’l” cut)
    8. An *amazing score* by Jerry Goldsmith (who scored Star Trek, Rambo, Planet of the Apes, Rudy, etc)
    9. Kryptonians on earth have two main weaknesses: kryptonite & magic. The films in the Reeves-verse you’ve seen have covered one of the two, Supergirl addresses the other. ✨
    10. After all the movies reviewed with guy leads (Bonds, Rockys, etc), on balance, reviewing more films with female leads would be most welcome. 🎞

Also, it makes the whole serie sflow better.
I get that they wanted 'Returns' to stand as the conclusion of a trilogy, but it doesn't really make sense. A lot of the story choices just seem -- odd. The title slate in theatrical cut is very off putting (unfinished, like a placeholder that someone forgot to replace with a real text screen or crawl or something.) And the explanation of Superman's departure -- just to look for Krypton for no real reason.
However, 'Returns' actaully makes much more sense -- the whole series: Lois' absence and being sidelined in III and IV -- all works better if you follow this order:
      1) Superman: The Movie
      2) Superman II (Theatrical Cut)
      3) Supergirl (The longest cut the better, special ed, UK, what have you) - shows us Earth in Superman's absence.
      4) Returns
      5) Superman III (now it makes sense why Superman/Clark is 'dating' someone else after the events of Returns
      6) Superman IV - again, Returns explains why Clark is 'playing the field'.

It had a sequel planned, which apparently would’ve come out in either 2009 or 2010 but due to this film’s less than stellar box office (it did make $391 million off a $223 million budget but the general rule it has to make at least double back to be considered successful) it was scrapped.
Which is unfortunate to a degree as the sequel apparently would’ve had a lot more action in it, as well as possibly Brainiac and / or Bizarro.
I even heard Darkseid was a possibility.

I'm going from memory. Bear in mind, I haven't read the Making Of for this movie since the years before its release, when it was covered in Starlog Magazine.
First, Superman 3 & 4 were pretty universally panned by the fan base: 3 in large part because Margot Kidder declined to reprise her role, so they went with Clarks comic book high school sweetheart, Lana. It also suffered because I think a lot of us were excited when it was reported that Brainiac was going to be the main villain, so we were seriously upset when those exciting plans got jettisoned in favor of that stupid computer. (Brainiac is a villainous computer lifeform from the comics.)
Superman 4: everything that could go wrong did go wrong with the production of Superman 4. I think they finally just cobbled together what they had, & hoped for the best. The fans hated it so much it killed the Christopher Reeves Superman franchise.
Meanwhile, the studio didn't want their cash cow to die, so proposals floated around. It was a given that we were just going to ignore the disastrous 3 & 4. Initial script development began on the premise that Superman chased a missile into space. That idea went nowhere, & pre production languished...
Meanwhile, in the comic books, a very popular story arc had just finished where a genetically engineered villain named Doomsday had apparently killed Superman, who was then buried in a tomb in Metropolis' equivalent of Central Park. Four different heroes arose carrying on his legacy, including a young clone & a mysterious, menacing "Superman" in black. The story arc ended with the true Supermans triumphant return, to defeat the amoral synthetic Superman in black.
Excited, the studio revived the project, announcing the movie's name: Superman Returns. The idea was to try to tell a version of the death/rebirth story from the comics.
Again, the project languished. Eventually, this script got written, & the movie filmed so long after the death/rebirth arc that the title was virtually meaningless. They added the unexplained absence to give the title meaning.
This movie was better received than 3 & 4 had been, but purist fans (myself included) were upset with changes made to Supermans costume. Not only were the colors darker, but they altered the belt buckle. They also tried to make the costume sexier.
I still want to see a Superman story with Brainiac! Preferably the re imagined Brainiac that looked more like a silver robot traveling in a skull-shaped ship that was an extension of him; and not the green skinned faux Coluan (?).
I will try very hard to not accidentally see you watch the Richard Dinner cut of Superman 2. I got halfway thru it watching another CZcamsrs reaction. I HATE the idiotic Richard Donner cut!!! The theatrical version is so much better!

Oddly, the things you liked about this - the many replays of moments, gags, and even quotes from the first film where you call the punchline before Superman says them - are the reasons that many found this film disappointing at the time. Combine that with Superman's borderline-stalker activities and the unprecedented level of brutality from Luthor in what should be a family-type film, and you can understand why this was not a huge hit.
