At this point making anything other than HL3 is just a big middle finger to the fanbase.
We get it, nobody works on HL3 and nobody at Valve cares about HL3 , just come out and say it already. Better be heartbroken than waiting for something that will never happen.

I think it's possible that Valve may just be keeping secretive about things, possibly due to past leaks.
But just think about it, Valve didn't make Source 2 to just update one game to the engine. We may see something about a new game sometime soon, although I can't say which game I think that will be.
Anyway, when it comes to HL3, I personally won't be getting hyped about it nor will I feel defeated about it. At least, not until I know something concrete.

You do realise it's been almost 9 years now?
9 years of silence doesn't look like "we want to keep this a secret". It looks more like "we have nothing to show.
I mean come on, DNF, Pray, stalker, all the games that took awhile to develop at least showed us something. Screenshots, videos, hell, even verbal promises from developers that it will be done "soon".
Valve showed us nothing thus far. So there's only one logical conclusion, HL3 is not in developement, or in a deep frozen status. Either way nobody cares to update the comunity on the current status of HL3 wich is just offensive at this point.
Just telling us "don't wait for HL3, we don't care about it, look at the useless VR that nobody cares about though" will be more than enogh.

And how do you know why Valve made Source 2? Are you an employee?
Because as far as i know you can sell the engine. You know, just like Epic does with Unreal 4. They realeased it 2 years ago and still no games have been developed by Epic. If we go by your logic then they only released UE4 to show off cool tech demos.
Actually this idea of Valve selling the license to their engine makes alot of sense if you look at the Source 2 features. Valve really emphisised the point that Source 2 now have a better SDK which lets you develop for S2 alot easier *wink wink*.
We all know that original Source didn't sell well. In fact almost nobody used it. Partially becuse it was a nightmare to develop for Source engine.

But that's the point of it all isn't it? Half-Life comunity doesn't care about just a "new game". All we care is for HL3, that's it.
Just any "new game" we can buy anywhere and from anyone, and we don't need to wait 9 god damn years to get it.

You should update the social media logos used on the end title screen each week. Each of them have been changed: Google+ (now using the new simpler Google typeface), CZcams (now more flat), Facebook (new typeface), and Twitter (now just the bird, not text).

I wouldn't call it a "new game" still its exciting just to scuffle into the files and find any reference HL3 I could find.

WELSHGAMER PRODUCTIONS A tech demo is designed to exclusively show off the technical prowess of an engine or feature. This definitely shows off VR as a feature, but it's designed more for the player's benefit - to teach them how room-scale works and why it is important.

No need to scream that it is in half-life universe anymore since it happened only because of Portal 1 to sell more copies of the second game.
