Just imagine it… You wake up on Christmas morning, brimming with excitement to see what presents Santa has left you under the tree. You spot a large, beautiful gift topped with a bow. THIS is the present you want to open first. You run towards it and the moment you touch it, you realize your mistake. You’ve failed your investigation roll… Large fang-like teeth pop out and eight monstrous eyes are staring straight at you. You’ve fallen victim to THE CHRISTMAS MIMIC.
Mimics are shape-shifting monsters that pretend to be an ordinary object to lure in their prey. They can be found in games like Dungeons & Dragons and Dark Souls. For Christmas 2022, we’re going to make our very own yuletide Mimic Christmas present. This DIY Mimic is easily made with foam board, air dry foam clay, and acrylic paints.

On the foam clay: when it dries it has the same properties as EVA foam so you can use a Dremel and/or a soldering iron for detailing but you want to wait until it is COMPLETELY dry which can take multiple days

That is so totally awesome! I've always felt that mimics were an underused critter. Since they can be anything why do they always have to be chests? Why not books, armoires, chairs, couches even and I love the toilet idea. Would love to see a sculpted toilet mimic!

FYI. Crayola model magic is foam clay. it seems to take a bit longer to dry when it's thick but will work in a pinch when you run out of the good stuff. love the project!

This is cool, but you know what would be cooler? Make the mimic with motion sensors so, when the vict-err…person isn’t too close, it looks like a present that is inviting them to open it. Then, when our target moves in to open it, the motion sensors activate and our mimic comes to life to devour them! THAT would be awesome!
That's pretty awesome, you captured the look of the mimic very well. With that technique, in my mind's eye though I see a symbiote.

Ooo, in February can we expect a spooky valentines day? Bleeding love hearts and flowers with teeth. Heart shaped box with fingers and eyeballs lovingly packed in cupcake wrapper lined slots.

when sticking clay to another surface one thing that really helps to make sure it stays on is to score the surface. Basically just make lots of little cuts and scratches so that there's some texture for the clay to grab onto. Still the way you did it works and the project looks great!

Excellent job! I genuinely thought that Mimic Treasure Chest monsters were exclusively from the Dark Souls video game series? I had no idea they dated back to the 1970s with Dungeons & Dragons. You learn something new every day :)
I love it! Mimics are always fun. I've always wanted to make a spring trap that looks like a normal box or chest but when you open it it causes it to spring open and show its a mimic.

This is so fantastically cool!! Jamie, your paint job on this one was out of this world!! You both are SO talented and I am super glad you have decided to make this a year-round channel! I always look forward to a new video from you guys! Foam clay is definitely something that takes some getting used to but you really did a fantastic job with it! I get your texture woes! You can use a dremel, files, sandpaper, etc. on it once it has fully cured, if that helps! It IS really nice to use when you need to keep something light weight but that cure time can be a bear! Anyway, hope you and yours have a very Happy Holiday and a healthy, happy, and prosperous New Year!

Make more of those Christmas present mimics but in different shapes, sizes, and colors. Put body parts in them, have them stick out, then lay them out around a 7ft man eating Christmas tree with big yellow eyes and big sharp teeth, branches that look like clawed hands, and vine tentacles.

Foam clay is my favorite thing. I shove it in molds and freeze it, then pop them out and let them dry like that it works really well, but takes a while to dry.
Oh! You can carve the stuff if it's completely cured! So details last!
