    Hi Sam! Wow, an LNWR locomotive?! Love that railway! My favourite LNWR engines are probably the Cornwall, Jubilee 4-4-0 (gotta love compounds), the Greater Britain and the Claughtons. Finally, here's an idea for the future: Uncle Fredrikson's Balancing steam locomotive, I think it could be possible if it was a tender locomotive that doesn't have a pivoting drawbar. (up and down movement) 😄

    I think you've inadvertently designed the best possible mechanism for model trains here - with driven small and large wheels, you've got the best of both worlds when it comes to gearing. You've basically combined two different engines together - It's like having a freight engine to start your train, then an express engine maintaining its speed. Brilliant!

    Sam,small note- your prototype is in the shop gray,that the Victorian builders used,for the photos! The reason for that,was the use of ORTHOCHROMATIC FILM,which was extremely blue sensitive! PANCHROMATIC FILM,all colors didn't come in,until later! Ortho film was/is still used in the graphic arts for printing plates(lithography),and other technologies[including printed circuits]! Just a side light,on what most people take for granted! And yes,I handled my share of that type of film!! Thank you 😇 😊!!

    first off, hats off to you on making an incredibly difficult locomotive. i think you are on a great path to making it work, here are just 2 other options that may have worked.
    the first is my favorite, and thats to have the single wheel driven, have the rear wheel fixed and have the front wheel floating in a sprung slot. this produces an authentic look but has issues with traction
    the second, i would have had the pusher and trailing wheels powered, with the center single left unpowered. having it floating with a light spring pushing down would keep the wheels in contact with the rail. this in my opinio would produce the best runner, but might have other problems i am unaware of.
    overall, i think you know what you are doing and probably have the best design. these are just 2 other alternatives that came to mind

  • @lindaoffenbach

    Amazing new printing project Sam! Resin does open up an entire new world indeed. Another potential problem of resin printing is deformation and warping of the printed materials which your prototype does show as well but you hopefully get that sorted. Märklin has done an RTR of such wheel configuration with the 'Adler' (Eagle). We don't have it in the collection so we don't know how they've solved the inherent traction problem. Your solution seems to work well, so well done there. The prototype was a Stephenson's made and design for Germany's first commercial railway by steam traction for the public. Bon chance for all the work involved and for bringing this fascinating loco to life. Cheerio.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Thanks Linda - yeah all sorted with those issues now luckily! I'd be interested to know how they solved it actually, it's certainly a tricky wheel config! I'd guess it's tender/coach driven, but only a guess!
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    • @lindaoffenbach
      @lindaoffenbach Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@SamsTrains Having found online instructions of that model (year 2000), yes indeed, you're quite right. They've put the motor in the tender which has 4 wheels / 2 axles, all being driven via 2 worm gears. Two wheels have been given rubber tyres (M's default standard) opposing diagonally, but you don't like such. The pickup shoe is located under the tender as well but that's not relevant for the Trix model (2-rail DC). Running characteristics have been rated as mediocre due to rather compromised contact to ground caused by the relative lightweight of the whole thing. But there you have it. Tender driven indeed. However, in your case, your tender in the project has 3 axles as well which would pose a similar traction problem should the motor been place there.

  • @MGDriver99
    @MGDriver99 Před 11 měsíci

    Always a kick when you find an engineering solution to a problem. Just as a point of interest, you can see one wheel spin slightly when starting after changing direction - this is because of the backlash in the gears. If it's the driver that momentarily spins when starting then at least you can claim it's prototypical! If you're not using one already I can recommend getting a "space mouse" to orientate the CAD model with your left hand while you select points / commands / etc using the normal mouse with your right.

    It’s a wonderful model, I’ve been working on a GWR 2-2-2 class; the Queen class, which through its life started with a slender boiler and no cab, but ended with a 20th look with cab and belpaire firebox. It doesn’t have visible pistons and rods which makes it much easier, and as I’ve stuck to a single axle drive, the front axle is suspended, but to be honest, it’d probably end up a better loco with tender drive using a Dean Goods tender (Mainline / Dapol / Hornby). What you have achieved here with the gearing and that twin driven axle akin to the locomotion models Sterling, is absolutely superb, hats off to you
    Resin is great for detail but I wouldn’t use it for much of the chassis, it ages quite poorly and I’ve got loco bodies that have shattered like glass after a few years so I’d try and make key bits of structure (and valve gear) produced in FDM and where FDM can’t deliver detail, add a resin insert. It’s surprising how capable my little ‘Weefun Tina2’ is at producing rivet detail for these kinds of jobs.
    Where I’ve struggle with dimensional accuracy over time (heat, UV) I’m actually considering using laser cut acrylic to act as a ‘backbone’ for chassis parts.

  • @davidbugler4597

    In the March 1967 'Railway Modeller' there's a Stroudley single-wheeler with the leading and trailing axles driven, leaving the centre axle unpowered and floating. That could work here too. Alternatively, how about tender drive, which with decent weighting could effectively give you a power bogie.
    24.25 The 'brake wheel' is, I'm pretty sure, for raising and lowering the water pick-uo scoop between the second and third tender axles. If you have this wheel and shaft, ideally you should also fit a basic representation of the scoop as well -- not that much of it would be visible anyway in the raised position. Ramsbottom fitted these scoops to his express locos, including the Problem class, from 1862.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Před 11 měsíci +2

      Yeah I did consider this too! I deemed it too complicated to bring gears to both ends of the chassis like that. Tender drive would almost certainly have been much more sensible... but I just like loco drive, and I enjoyed the challenge of doing it this way... it was a bit of a skill building exercise I guess!

    Suggest you add extra side clearance on the undriven axle of the loco and the centre axle of the tender to improve running on curves, May also need to change the brake rigging on those axles to allow these axles to move sideways on curves. May also need a redesign of the electric pick ups on the side moving axles. Very good attempt at a redesign of the original for an OO model. Many era 2 locos where 0-4-4 or 4-4-0 until later in the era when 0-6-0 became the norm. Of course 0-8-0 came from Austria in era 3. Well done.

    You've used the same solution that Bachmann used on the Thomas-the-Tank-Engine version of the Stirling Single, powering the driving wheel and the rear carrying wheel, and adjusting for the difference in wheel diameters via the gearing.
    Another solution that I've seen for 2-2-2s is to power the two pairs of carrying wheels, with the driving wheel freewheeling. That, in effect, makes it like a diesel bogie.

    Centre mounted dual ended motor driving the outer axles with the driver free running and floating up/down and left/right? Simple gearing via worm gears (one left handed, one right handed) and still plenty of space for weight over both driven axles.
    Just a thought :)

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Před 11 měsíci

      That is a great idea for sure, but there's only room for a small radius gear over the rear axle due to the height of the running plate in the cab... so there'd have to be multiple gears powering that axle, taking up a lot of space. The twin worm drives plus the motor would actually pretty much fill the body too, which would leave very little room for extra weight!
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    This is a case where having all wheels sprung would be the best solution. Harder springs on the driving wheel so you can make it work prototypically. You should build a Martin Finney, or high level kit. It would get you TONS of experience on how to make well balanced, sprung or compensated locos.

    If you can't think of anything to do with your prototype models, you could paint them up into scrap engines, or engines that are being constructed as dressing for the layout or a custom load for a flatbed car. 🚂

    Hey Sam, great video as always! Just a quick tip from a fellow designer/3D printer enthusiast. Design your rivets as cylinders rather than hemispheres, less geometry for sketchup to run, and also theyll look a tad more prominant than the rounded ones, especially once painted which will also help to round them off a bit.

    Yeah 2-2-2's were an absolute nightmare in real life to work properly. And were infamous for slipping when starting and if the springs on the front and back wheels were not set properly they would steal grip from the single driver. And I always feel bad for the footplate crew having no weather protection. Don't fancy driving one of these on a rainy day with the wind blowing.

    Fantastic work on this one! I figured you’d be coming up with some good stuff using the new printer!
    I have the etched metal kit from London Road Models waiting in my collection of things to build. With the Romford wheels and axles, etched brass plates and other parts I got to complete it, I think it’s cost about US$200 more than your printed model, so that’s a lot saved on your end! 3D printers really do pay for themselves.

      @@SamsTrains Looking back, the 32mm drivers I got are Romford/Markits, but the bogie wheels are Scalelink with plastic centers. I think R/M does have metal 14mm bogie wheels available, at least direct, but I usually order through other sources for all-in-one-package convenience.
      Alan Gibson also has a huge range of specialized wheels for UK 00 scale models, so I think those would be worth a look.

    An interesting project. Going down the route Rapido went with their Stirling Single. And it looks excellent.
    I hope someone does new versions of the 2 singles Hornby have done, since both are severely outdated: GWR Achilles class (Dean Single) and CR 123 (Caley Single). Plus, a model of the MR 115 class (Johnson Spinner) would be great as part of the National Collection In Miniature series (like the Stirling Single was).

    a) no matter if it works or not, you will have leared loads, that will be useful in your next project. b) if this version doesn't work, make another one, making the original's second iteration... obviously it wouldn't be very prototypical if the first one worked flawlessly right away

    If you like Ramsbottom LNWR locos, the DX Goods is a massive gap in the market. It was the most numerous British steam loco by some margin (beating the LMS Black Five) but is almost forgotten, as is John Ramsbottom. The man was a genius and invented half the stuff on steam locos.

    • @lantilo6873
      @lantilo6873 Před 11 měsíci

      The DX goods was also famously his greatest mistake. The locomotives just kept getting produced up until Webb took his place and immediately shut down the production, because the engines were performing dreadfully. The LNWR suffered major economical problems throughout the entire mid Victorian-period because of it, as the engines simply couldn’t perform the tasks needed of them. Webb desperately tried to improve upon the design, but because there were so bloody many of them, it just wasn’t feasible.

    They were called the "Problem" class because (and some of the reasons may be erroneous, for reasons I'll explain) 1) The first "Problems" had very temperamental water injectors, which is almost certainly erroneous, as the early "Problems" had a totally different system for getting water into the boiler. 2) They were called "Problems" because the first was named "Problem" in tribute to mathematical problems (this COULD be true, but it's very, very niche) or 3) The engines, although otherwise very good indeed, used to surge fore and aft at high speed, being a bit of a jerky rider. (This, to me, is probably the best theory as to why the "Problems" were called the "Problems"!)
