  • Track 1 from their sixth album “Ma” released in 1973 copyright Motown Records. The album was their most critically acclaimed and all songs were written or co-written by Motown producer Norman Whitfield. Written and produced by Norman Whitfield. RIP Mark Olson, Ed Guzman, Norman Whitfield & Gil Bridges. Featuring:
Peter Rivera - Lead vocals, drums & percussion
Ray Monette - Lead & rhythm guitars & background vocals
Mark Olson - Keyboards & background vocals
Gil Bridges - Flute, sax & background vocals
Mike Urso - Bass & background vocals
Ed Guzman - Congas & timbales
This is the story about the lady that raised me, ah, ha, ha, ha
    Get up, get out
Well, she was born in a log cabin in the backwoods of Blackfoot, Mississippi
She drank moonshine, chews tobacco, raised thirteen children all by herself
Never looked much like a lady, you see, she was too busy providin' and raisin' her babies
Spent her evenin's sittin' in a rockin' chair, never had much o' nothin but was always willin' to share
    Ma, talkin' about Ma, yeah
Talkin' 'bout my Ma, talkin' about Ma, yeah
Education, she didn't have none, never had a sick day in her life
Stronger than any too-good man, you better believe it, oh, yes she was, now lookie here
When Papa died, Mama put her love on a shelf, yes, she did
She swore up and down on the good book, she wouldn't love nobody else
Made sure that we were in church every Sunday
"Papa woulda wanted it that way", that's what she'd always say
    Ma, talkin' about Ma, yeah
Talkin' 'bout the lady that raised me, talkin' about Ma, yeah
Every once in awhile when Ma would get depressed, she'd go to the closet and get Pa's guitar
Sit herself down in the rockin' chair, start hummin' and strummin', ha, ha, yeah, lookie here y'all
That was Ma's way of lettin' off steam, in plain old English we could see that Ma was doin' her thing
Every once in awhile she'd shout, "Wow, let it all hang out"
    Ma, talkin' about Ma, yeah
    Ma, talkin' about Ma, yeah
Talkin' 'bout the lady that raised me, talkin' about Ma, yeah
Get up, get out, give it to me, give it to me, give it to me, whoa

This was our favourite song around the time we got married in 1974 & we insisted on it being played in the restaurant KHYBER in Pune whenever we went out for a meal. Eventually the restaurant guys would start playing it as soon as we entered. Now listening to it on my own BOSE system, nostalgia takes charge. Of course I am 72 & my wife is 68 but we listen to it with the same fondness !!

The Ma album by Rare Earth is a very good album, and Motown producer Norman Whitfield brought out the best of the band on this album. The title track is just 17 minutes of kick ass funk Rock. This was one of the last albums Norman Whitfield produced before he left Motown. RIP Gil Bridges, Ed Guzman, and Mark Olson......

David was way ahead of his time and he that car stereo eight track hooked up to a AC/DC battery charger with speakers in every room . He’d bring you a cold beer that had just a little ice in it . And we jammed most days and then go down to A&W and get those Rootbeers in a chilled mug. You talking about enjoy the times we did. Rest in peace you were Heavy D of the early 70’s. imagine being 17 years old, taking a weekend trip across the Alps to go to the U.S. Consulate in Zurich to get a tourist visa with a bunch of stoner buddies who went to needle park to buy a bunch of hash in August of 1984. On the way back, broke and eating delicious yet cheap Swiss chocolate, getting lost up the San Bernardino mountain pass parking somewhere along a dirt road up at over 700feet altitude in the dark. Falling asleep in that tiny Fiat 127 the four of us and waking up the next morning snowed in with hash smoke so thick could hardly see anything listening to this song... What a trip!
Ahhh, memories... :-) THANK YOU RARE EARTH
