When i was around 8 my brother introduced me to the franchise, im 17 now and actually just beat kh3 2 days ago after holding it off for like 5 years 😅. Even though it's a very long complicated franchise playing every game up to kingdom hearts 3 it's a beautiful story that's been worked on for 2 decades. I have the original ps2, psp, ds and 3ds games too. It's kinda crazy how the franchise is still going since i consider it still a very underrated franchise.
Kingdom hearts 1 feels like a disney game
Kingdom hearts 2 is just straight up badass
Kingdom hearts 3 is a chefs kiss to a beautiful story "conclusion"

Yeah honestly now that i’m halfway through KH2 (life is getting kinda busy so it’s taking longer) i’m just in total awe. like i said in this video, KH already blew me away with just how great it was for the time it released but whole shit Kh2 takes it a step further. I really am happy I got into it, thanks for the comment and for the tip 😭🙏

Glad you liked KH1. I assume you didn't get secret ending, or fight the secret boss, or read the reports. I recommend at least checking out the secret bosses and endings. Also you don't skip CoM, it's before 2. At least watch the cutscenes. And Days comes after 2.
Also there are the mobile games I recommend watching before KH3. Damo has a entire dub for Union X, and compilation of all cutscenes for Dark Road.
You might also want to check out Versus 13 after playing KH3 Remind DLC, since that's important for 3 and 4.
oh i actually have checked our the secret bosses and ending and wont be skipping anything! I just wont be making videos on them haha thank for the tips tho I will definitely check out Versus 13!!

Im glad you enjoyed your time with it! This series is 100% my favorite game franchise of all time with Sonic and Smash Bros right behind it. The sense of adventure, fun, action, and joy I get playing these games is unmatched, honestly. Funny thing, the series is as old as my younger brother, which is really cool. :)
Kingdom hearts 2 and 3 are more of the same as Kingdon Hearts 1, which is just more improved.
The spin offs are part of the story, and they expirement with different gameplay styles. (Still action rpgs, just executing magic and stuff might be different.) The collections organize them in the order you should play them, but just know that 358/2 days is actually better enjoyed after 2. (In the collection, it's just a cutscene movie since the original was a ds game.)
The story itself is only complicated to many because of how much you need to remember. If you play the games in order, it's really not that hard to follow. The spin-offs basically flesh things out worldbuilding or charcter wise, and really help add more stakes as you progress along the story. For example, one game let's you play as another character to see their journey of self rediscovery and how their story ties into Sora's.
But anyways enough of my rambling. My passion for this series can make talk way too much on it. Im just gonna stop and just let you enjoy your journey. Hope you have fun and enjoy this crazy adventure from Tetsuya Nomura.

Yeah. You will find that each title is different, yet similar to one another.
The number titles are similar enough to each other that you should still feel comfy.
Birth By Sleep and Dream Drop Distance both have a unique system called the Command deck system. Still, it plays close enough to the numbered games. This, system was just used to make it easier to play on handheld game systems like the psp and 3ds.
Re:Chain of Memories using a card based action comparison system. Kinda hard to explain it so you'll just have to see it for yourself. Chain of Memories was originally a GBA game you see, and a Gameboy advance doesn't have as many buttons as a ps2 controller, so they had to make a new battle system for gba. They then made a ps2 port with voice acting and 3d and released that after kingdom hearts 2. The collection uses the ps2 version, though it keeps the card system.
0.2 is a separate game that is short, but gives you an appetizer to what kh3 will be like.
358/2 days, Recoded, and X Back Cover are just cutscene movies. The first two were regular ds games, while X Back Cover was telling need to know events from their mobile game. (Yes, it's Canon. Takes place 1000 years in the past.)
Whichever game you'll like by the end of the DLC episode in kingdom hearts 3 will be up to you in the end, but I can't say I hate or dislike any entry in this series. Some I play less than others for sure, but no bad game exists here as far as I'm concerned.

Some more things to remember for the future while I still am chatting here.
Re:Chain of Memories has two campaigns. You unlock the second when you finish the first campaign. I won't spoil anything about either, but the plot begins to take shape here and you may grow to love a character more than you expected to by the end.
Melody Of Memory the most recent game does have new story stuff to tease kh4. Over 20 minutes of new cutscene stuff. You only get to view it at the end of the game though, so if you are not Big on rhythm games, then looking up cutscenes is best. (It's the hardest game easily.) But yeah melody of memory is just a celebration of the franchise post kh3, so it's more just a fun hoorah for making it through the first arc.
Oh and vague warning for the future. If you are the emotional type, keep a tissue box on hand as you continue to progress. They aren't afraid to tug at your heart going forward.

i think it holds up super well! but you could always start with KH2 after watching some story videos :)
