Lisa and I are so grateful Mark. I've been mesmerised all night studying the plant life in our new pond. It is just perfect Mark. Thank you so much. Rock onnnn.
Nigel Pullen it was a joy working in your garden, enjoy 😉
Hi Mark, all useful stuff. My pond is now structually finished and now ready for planting up and this will be a real help thanks
Glad to help
I’m going to go and buy some plants for my fish pond now I’ve seen that video! Feel very inspired and love the red lobelia so going to try and find one today. Thanks for the planting advice feel more comfortable planting them in my fish pond now! Look forward to seeing the video next week so I can check I planted mine right
Liz Blann fantastic stay tuned
Great video Mark, any information about plants is always really welcome. Following the recent advice on pond plants you gave me my new patio pond is looking good. Thanks
Thank you for watching and the positive feedback
Enjoyed the longer video about pond plants. Thanks Mark
Matty's Fish tanks thank you
Love your videos Mark and would like to see one on the various stages of plants, what to expect and when and potential issues to look out for!
That would be an interesting topic, would have to film it over a season.
Great info mark , cheers👍
Benno Ben thank you
Water lillies are my favourite pond plant. I would love a video on lilies! I know you’ve been a judge for the international water lily society and would love to know which ones are best for this countries weather! As always great advice and knowledge on plants. Good job
Charlotte Wilson I can’t wait to see some flowers this year!
Top job again mark 👍👌
James THE KOI whisperer thank you mate
Would be great to see division and repotting of an overgrown water lily in your water lily video and their general care & maintenance. Also would really like to hear more about the hardy carnivorous plants you showed here.
Got a waterlily video in the pipe line, thank you for the feedback what you would like to see more of. Stay tuned
Another great video Mark! Shoutout from Quantico Virginia! ❤️ I’m learning so much from your wonderful videos! I’m on my second pond build, a bigger pond ,it’s a koi pond this time! You have such a plethora of valuable information. Thank you so much! My first 9’ x11’ x 2 1/2 deep pond turned out fantastic! ❤️ I’d love to see a video from you on the Fiber Optic plant. How well does it do in the shade? Can you use fish emulsion as a fertilizer etc. 🙂
Hey, yes the fibre optic plants is great for shade
Maintenance of pond plants would be an ideal topic, we’ve inherited a pond in a new home and the water is black due to poor/no maintenance. Currently planning a rebuild to give the koi a better place to live and don’t want it to end up in the same state again.
Lloyd Naylor made a note of the topic pond plant maintenance, it’s been covered lightly in a few of my videos. Black water is also a topic I have covered, how to clear black water if I remember, make sure you have an intake bay or surface skimmer feeding a nice big waterfall or wetland filter!
Amazing vid, after moving to our new place the wife made me rid of all my aquarium and fish, but allowed me to build a pond which is all new to me, watching your videos have helped me massively on my first starter pond, many thanks keep up the good work
thank you for sharing
Lovely, useful video!
Cheers mark, buying some plants today!
Ben love it,
@@ThePondAdvisor Got a few fish aswell
Good stuff Mate 👊🏼
Thank you
Hi mark great video would you come to Cheshunt in Hertfordshire to do a new pond...please???😎
steve smith email me your detail mark@anypond.com would need pictures of your garden to see what you see!
Hello mark. You are amazing in your work.I always see and learn from your videos. Mark I am from India, At my place the temperature is around 6 degrees in winters and around 45 degrees Here we have very very little rainfall. Mark i m startng a fish store and garden pond making bussiness in coming months.I m learning from long time from your videos. My question is like in aquariums we need 30 percent water change in a week. Do we also have to change water in a planted garden fish pond or not.
And if we have to change it is in how many days.Just now in my pond i only level up the evaporated water in a week.
Thanks a lot
mfaisal bobby no need to change any water on an outside garden fish pond, you will have to keep the pond topped up however. When you say 6 degrees is that Fahrenheit or Celsius
Brilliant video.
Great walk through of all the plants. Love the names are included. I couldn't spell half of those. Haha. One thing that would help is if they will all survive winter (zones)? Can they live in water coming up from a spring to a lake?
In the U.K. yes for sure, so zone 7 and 8
Hi Mark! I would love to see you do a detailed video, giving specific step by step instructions on how you adapt an aqua block to hold a submersible pump. I've watched the high speed videos and tried to pause and slow down, etc. I know you must use a specific tool and follow a few "rules of thumb" when you do this. I'm almost done digging the giant hole for my intake bay, so I'd love to see a video like this. Thanks!
bags GA I have a intake bay video coming out in a couple of weeks but I use a pump vault and a aquabloc cut in half.
@@ThePondAdvisor I will watch for the video! Thanks! What do you use to cut it? Do you just sit the top back on? Or attach in some way? Love your videos!
I cut the blocs with a multi tool myself but you can use a saw or disc cutter. Snips what ever you have. A multi cutter is the simplest if you have one. I cable tie the top or a door on one side so you just have to clear the gravel and then open the door/top. If you don’t fix it might move unless it’s a tight fit!
Great video again mark what's the best plants for koi fish as they just RIP them apart I was trying to get water lettuce just hard to come by keep up the good work
Grow the plants in floating baskets or in planting pockets where the fish can't get to them, yes trying to grow water lettuce on a koi pool it's expensive salad. Grow out of the reach of the koi, in a waterfall or stream.
Hi Mark, fantastic vids. I have a fish pond, I like the way it is which is nice and clear, what plants can I have that won't compromise the clarity, easy to maintain and won't take over the pond.
Yes all the ones in this video will help
Great video. It is worth saying that the red flowers on the Lobelia draw hummingbirds to our pond area. Also I found it strange that you said floating plants and not “rafting plants”. I thought that was a signature U.K. Thing? Do you guys use bog lily there or spider lily?
lol, yes lobelia draw in hummingbirds but not across the big pond here in the UK, as we don’t have any, no we don’t really grow spider/bog lily’s it’s a plant that is over looked buy the growers.
Hi Mark, what's the best Red water Lilly for a small pond? Great job as always.
My favourite is Perry’s Baby Red
Great info! Can you do a video on planting/potting them? I've heard so many different things, just use top soil, just use clay, mix natural clay kitty litter w/ top soil, use aquatic media.... what works for you for most plants? I've got a small 50 gal pond. I plan to add corkscrew rush, dwarf lilies & water poppy. I really would like pickerel rush but I think it'll be too big for my little pond (with gold fish). Thanks so much!
Great idea! I would love to develop my own aquatic soil.
Fantastic Channel
Thank you 🙏
hey mark, i just found u yesterday and finally got time to watch this video. I am liking your content very much, but i have some questions. the classification of zones describe what exactly? are these zones for all plants? or just the ones that are classified as pond plants? my interests are for ponds and ecosystem filtration. obviously with the proper arrangement I'm sure i can find myself getting into other hobbies with plants, but for now I'm just learning about these types.
Basic depths of the water
Love it great job first
petClub Aquatics thank you
Can u do more info on growing ferns in the pond please
Lee Rose would love to, some ferns love growing in and around water
Hi mark. I just bought an iris for my fish pond. Do they like to be submerged or just their feet? Also some pink flamingo and brooklime? Thank you
Depends on the variety
Could you make a video on how to thin or cut pond plants? Do you pull them out with roots or simply cut them and where is the cut made? Also when is the best time to do that.? I’ve got bulrushes choking irises and water lilies, what is best for plants and also pond regeneration zone such that root filteration is maximised.
Gaia Games most water plants prefers different husbandry, I have a few plant videos. The plant care is different with each plant as you have 5 to 7 zones
would love to see a few top 5 plants for these catagories 1 fastest grow for a (aquaponic bog garden) 2hardiest plants
3 most colourful
Daniel Merrell fast - water cress, buy a bag or two at the supermarket, hardiest reeds, duckweed, colourful, red foliage lobelia, white and green foliage (Iris lavagata var see my video), white and pink foliage - Oenanthe javanica ‘Flamingo’
Do you have a video of pond plants that you think are good for streams and waterfalls.
Yes, can’t remember the name best flowering waterfall plants
Cheers, Mark. Have enjoyed loads of your videos, but am wondering is there an advantage to leaving waterplants in their pots as apposed to rooting them under stones/rocks?
Yes and no, if it’s a dedicated water garden (all about the plants) then yes 100% leave them in containers, if it’s about planting up a ecosystem pond (something for everything) then in the rocks and gravel.
In a water garden or water lily pool you can feed the plants a lot more so growing in containers is a must. Plus normally the water is dyed black so the eye is not distracted by the containers and under water stuff.
@@ThePondAdvisor my ponds are definitely for dragonflies/damselflies, frogs and newts (if they ever turn up!) so will get the gravel out. Much appreciated.
hello...does water lettuce roots reach down into the pond bottom/dirt ? I
Hi Mark can some of these plant go in a bog please iv just got iris, evergreen one and the 1 with red foliage with red flower can u do a video on bog plants please x
Gwen Gray yes all of these plants would be ok in a big garden, are you talking about an up flow bog (ie wetland filtration)?
@@ThePondAdvisor flow bog
@@gwengray130 that's what I'm looking for > up flow bog plant's
I've just finished doing a pond pool thing in the garden is 460 liters 2ft deep with a 1ft ledges. I'm wondering what plants would clean and oxidize the water? I have built a small waterfall thank to you're videos.
vigilante Rider all of these plants will be good for water quality
The Pond Advisor thanks for that information
No problem
Can you advise what and where to obtain plants that will clear the green water that has appeared in my small pond on allotment. I have a couple of lilies with 5 buds and a fern type greenery as well as shield type plant. Never had a pond before and am floundering on what to do! Sandra
czcams.com/video/Rw9RcmdBccg/video.html
We have a 2.2m deep pool converted to a koi/goldfish/rainbow trout pond (Australia). We have water lillies in the shallow end (0.8m deep). What can we grow in the deep end?
Floating baskets any depth, there are water lilies that will grow up in 2.2m - 2.4m plus you can raise them up on aqua bloxs
What size planting basket should Juncus effusus f. spiralis corkscrew rush be planted in please? And also any info on typha minima please?
m.czcams.com/video/SA7vBEZ6pOY/video.html
Juncus Spiralis can fill a 10 to 15 litre (4 gallon) pot. Depending on the age of the plant.
Typha Minima will enjoy a solid-sided container
Hi Mark,
What's the best deep water plant can I get for my small pond 8×5×4
Charles Bryant orontium aquaticum golden club
@@ThePondAdvisor thx u I will get some ordered
WhT is your thinking of elephant ears in ponds. I have two in mine. Are they beneficial for the water.
Yes and No, depends on the Latin name, I know a few plants with the name elephants ears.
What plants are best for absorbing nitrite, nitrates and ammonia?
Fast growing or large leafy ones, I use rafting plants unless its a koi pool the I protect the plant growth from the fish until is grows enough to cope with the elements. Veg, wetland filters.
We have a big bird of paradise plant we would like to make the focal plant in the center of our pond, doable? we are in AZ so weather is not a issue.
Yes if you build or create an island in the middle, I have not grow bird of paradise in the water so I can’t comment on if it will do well in the water.
Pls do a video on pond plants that can survive the winter water freezing without having to bring them indoors. I live in Canada with -30C winter. Thanks
I don’t have the experience with temps around 30- but I would say all the hardy pond plants will be ok. I was surprised to see so many of the same plants when I visited a few years ago. I also saw a lot more tropical pond plants growing as annual, loved the lotus we don’t have the sun or heat I believe in the UK so the plants do poorly
Hi Mark, great video. I just wanted to know where you get your plants from?
I buy plants from all over, if I see something good I will buy it and hold it grow it or propagate it. A lot of the aquatic centre have good plants in around Easter and bank holidays
Thank you very much
Have you got any suggestions for plants to use in a bog filter?
Depends on the size of the bog? Depends on the construction of the bog, depends on what else is in the pond. All these plants will enjoy an upflow of water
@@ThePondAdvisor - I really appreciate you responding to my comment. After writing this question, I stumbled across your video on ‘what plants grow in gravel’ which was really helpful and basically told me what I needed to know. Your videos have been such a huge help in inspiring me to create a nature pond in my garden. Not quite finished and the bog filter is something I want to build once I’m happy with the pond.
Hi Mark My husband and I are doing a Pond for Koi Fish this year Very Soon. I need to find out where can I get. Or Grow Water Lillies. Thank you So much!
You can buy lilies online, local garden centres
Thank you So Much!
How do you go about planting plants in between rocks and gravel rather than in a basket? Do you remove as much soil as possible or leave the original potted soil? or make a space in between gravel and compact soil in there? Sorry, water plants are new to me!
all of the above, if depends on the plant, the type of pond or pool. fish or wildlife, plant only ponds or water gardens where it’s all about the plants
Thanks for the reply mark. Was looking at putting some forget me not (Myosotis scorpioides variegata) variety and marsh marigold in my biofalls rock tray, hopefully without soil so as not to promote algae growth. Also planting umbrella palm in between rocks inside of pond and water Lilly’s without introducing soil to the pond. I have a couple of koi and goldfish, can I do this with these plants?
How do you make a pocket for plants in a stream, and how deep would you use stones.
Same as a pond, underlay/overlay pocket. Not sure 🤔 by the question how deep would I use stone. The depth of gravel? Planting pocket, Filtration base of pond all different answers
@@ThePondAdvisor sorry, when doing a stream and also in base of pond
It would be nice to see close up pictures of the plants to help me identify them .
Thanks for the feed back
Can you do reeds, there's so many and little fish love to hide in them. But I struggle with them. Thanks Mark.
Yes no problem, what reeds have you tried?
@@ThePondAdvisor cattails, bullrushes that sort of thing. I even put root tabs in their pot to spur them on in spring, they just melt away and don't grow back. They get partial to full sun in the afternoon. I can grow the native grass very well though. I may try the small papyrus next. Thanks. (you can see my pond if you click on me).
Jeff Parry ok I will take a quick look
Added a lobelia and arum Lilly to my bog. Do I need to cut them back at anytime of the year?
Great question, no I would not detail trim (cut them back), I would remove the dead foilage
Some times the lobelia might need support if you have an exposed site. Or it will snap off
Fantastic video . I have just recently started interest in pond plants . I have waterlily in whisky barrel pond. Which water plants I can order now to add in my water Lilly ponds ? Where can I asked for ? I liked the red foliage in your video very much .
Please reply . X Zarina

Which to order now, evergreen ones!
Where can I ask - not sure of the question
Red foliage - lobelia cardinalis
My pond located in a shaded area I planted some water Lilly and the will never bloom. What can I do to help them bloom
Kendal Jones waterlilys need a sunny spot, a pond lily will do better but the flowers are different.
try hawthorn

great video, I have a small collection of carnivorous plants growing in a peat bog, I have bought some plants that I would like to grow along side my CP , Geranium Palustis, Iris Versicolour- blue flag. Primula Rosea. Lobelia Siphilitica ' Alba ' would they tolerate the peat or grow them separate ? they were in a clearance sale so they only cost me £2.00 each.DaveC-london
They all would prefer loam based aquatic soil. Cotton grass love peat.
thanks for the info, looking at solar fountains just to give water movement opted for a mono crystalline panel as it does not require sun and a pwm unit to keep control of the charging to a car battery.
Sounds good
Is there a plant that can grow in the pond without soil. Tried to do so for pandan but the roots rotted.

Hello mark, I'm looking for help on what plants to use to help rid my wildlife pond of blanket weed and other algae to help get clear water again. Any information would be a great help. It's a 7ft square pond and 3ft deep. Thanks in advance
3’ deep that sounds more like a fish pond? Why did you go so deep? I would clean out any rubbish in the bottom of the pond and then build up planting shelves. Fast growing plants is what you want to start with. Cheapest one water cress buy a bag from the supermarket and float on the surface.
@@ThePondAdvisor it had gold fish in before I took it over. Its on my allotment. I've made some shelving and put in a ramp but struggling to get the water clear.

I'm struggling to grow my waterlily from a pip its taking forever & only has 1 leaf? Is this normal its in 15cm of water in a still sunny area away from my waterfall & the leaf is only the size of a 5 pence piece.

Cover the basket, with a wire hanging basket or cobbles.

Oh my gosh you are adorable!

How do I actually plant these? In a pot? But what stops them tipping over?
Yes we plant them or use large containers. Most of the time its planting pockets and in the gravel.
Can I grow Vetiver on Pond as a floating island?
Not sure, I don’t know that plant
Most grasses will be ok I guess it depends how much the roots are in the water. I have grown a lot of plants on floating polystyrene before. Not this one however

How can I winterize plants that are planted in gravel in a wildlife pond?
it depends on where you are in the world
remove the snow so light cant get to the plants, the plants will oxygenate the water then, you can cut a hole in the ice for air breathing animals but the plants will be good if they are hardy
I’m in Pennsylvania which is a zone 5-6
patheticsteam perfect, hardy pond plants will be fine in the gravel, treat tropical as lovely annuals
I love your videos but not the music - sorry you wanted feedback x
thank you
Sarracenia roots should only be in water and not the rhizome, and even then they don’t like lots of nutrients in water that can be commonly found in ponds.
Yes fish ponds and pools can be a nightmare. Peat is the best media to grow these lovely little plants in. Have you seen my video when I was in Florida with Kenan we talked a lot about Pritcher plants
Music to load
Loud
Hi, I don't think you want to be introducing or encouraging Horsetail into your garden, our friend cannot get rid of it in his. It is a complete nightmare. This is what I found on the internet -
Horsetail is an invasive weed that can cause a lot of damage and disruption in British gardens.
Although it’s not an unattractive plant, horsetail has fast-growing underground stems which let it spread quickly and take deep hold, making it difficult to keep under control - Just a thought?
Lot of different Horse tail plants. Some are crazy this one is “Rough Horsetail” I find it easy to control in our ecosystem ponds. If you have a natural pond (clay lined then it might be a problem).
Your background music is too loud. It's very annoying.
Thanks for your feedback
