    OHMYGOD HEY!
Last week I was invited to the national press night of the SPONGEBOB musical at the Birmingham Hippodrome. The show is currently on tour across the UK ahead of a limited London season Summer 2023 at the Southbank Centre.
The musical, based on the beloved Nickelodeon cartoon stars Lewis Cornay as Spongebob Squarepants as well as Irfan Damani, Chrissie Bhima, Divina de Campo, Hannah Lowther and Gareth Gates and Tom Read Wilson who share the role of Squidward.
Check out today's new review vlog for my thoughts on this new production of the show...

Just to tap into the bit about being able to see musicians, I get that it can create issues when the music isn’t the main idea, but being able to see them makes me really happy because I feel like musicians, particularly in theatre, don’t get enough love and being able to see them not in a pit, forces people to credit them as well as a conductor, but I get where you’re coming from

This is probably one of the hardest shows to tour because of all the weird set shit- some of the more iconic tricks need a certain shaped stage to pull off, and a touring show might opt to save themselves the trouble and nix it.

i saw the broadway tour in 2019 and it was FANTASTIC. there were definitely set pieces missing that are present in the stationary productions, but i was still floored by how well everything came together. i felt everything maintained what made the chicago and broadway productions so special. it’s sad to see that some of the charm has been lost in the UK version. the direction and the costuming seemingly is, as is said in the video, cheap

I have to disagree with you about the songs. Tom Kitt was that central composer you mentioned, but it was Tina Landau’s vision to have the songs feel different to highlight how different and mismatched the town is. Imo the only weak song is Bikini Bottom Boogie, but that’s down to personal taste. Also Not A Loser is a GREAT song I won’t stand for this slander, I adore the wordplay and it’s my favourite song in the entire show.
But I do agree about Gareth Gates. I’m a diehard Gavin Lee fan so stunt casting a non-tap dancer as Squidward feels like such a mistake.

Yeah but BBBoogie is supposed to be a generic pastiche anyway, For me, weakest song is Chop to the Top - it's just very bland and doesn't really provide any sort of dramatic weight to the scene.
Outside of that, the songs are fire, especially the contrast on Money Money and the middle rap in Going Gets Tough.
Not a Loser is a massive show piece; superb execution.

I just performed SpongeBob, as SpongeBob, and this probably the best IP-turned-musical out there, the sets are spectacular, the casting (for Broadway) is spot on, and the songs are a bop, namely I’m not a loser and when the goin gets tough. Some of the jokes, like anything the mayor says, are absolutely hilarious. I respect your opinion, but three stars?!?

Went to see it in Birmingham on Saturday, not even much of a Spongebob fan, and I loved it! I actually thought the set was really impressive (but I agree that the volcano not having the gap they mentioned was a bit weird lol). I think the biggest drawback for me was that the songs weren't particularly cohesive, like you mentioned, and I really wish we'd heard even more of Patrick singing - his actor has such a beautiful voice, me and my mom were blown away by him.
I will say that Squidward's song was actually my favourite part of the show, and definitely the biggest crowd-pleaser on that night! There were definitely a lot of Gareth Gates fans in our audience. I also really, really loved the glow-in-the-dark sponge-ography, it was so impressive - I have no idea how they did it so precisely!

I saw the Broadway version in the pre-NYC tryout (in Chicago). It was a great deal of fun. It had all sorts of bizarre set pieces, including a kind of giant pinball machine.
The very, very best part of the show was Squidward. The actor's performance, basically, channeled the late, great Paul Lynde. It worked very well, of course the other performers were also great. My wife and I had a lovely evening.
    I bought keychains!!!
Mickey --- did you mean to say the whole cast was shipped from Broadway to The UK for the pro-shot? That sounds amazing, but possibly convoluted.

I saw the show on Broadway in 2017 and bought a ticket after seeing some set shots. It just looked fun and it was. However, I agree that the music lacked a certain direction and unifying quality. Having so many people involved, with so many different styles, made such a mix that I wasn't able to describe what it sounded like when a friend asked me the next day. That was one of the rare times I left a theater unable to hum any song. I also think that the ensemble has better material than the leads in this show. The group numbers were well choreographed and shone the light on a very generous and invested cast. I'm sure the principals had a good time, but the group always seemed to have more fun, more energy and stood out more when I attended the show. I can see how and why it has become a popular title with community theatre and high school groups.

I'm going to join the people who are ready to FITE IRL about Squidward's song. The person performing it really has to nail it, though, otherwise I can see how it might seem meandering. @@MickeyJoTheatre Oh my god hey! But also, boo this man!
Seriously though, I can see how it's a YMMV thing. All of the songs for the musical were written by artists who don't normally write songs for musicals, with very...variable. Results. The Jonathan Coulton and Sara Bareilles numbers work better than the ones by Lady Antebellum and John Legend, even though they're solid songwriters in a non-musical format. The too-many-syllables-in-a-line-to-a-nonsense-degree and the triple-negatives in I'm Not a Loser tickled me, but that's my sense of humor. I can see how it might drive a music or theater major up the WALL, though, it's structured more like a comedy/novelty song than a song from a musical, even a silly one.

I honestly always try to avoid stunt casting, I say to my friend if a celeb got the role there's a chance they'll be great but there's also a chance they'll suck because they've got the role purely because of their name. But if you have a regular actor they auditioned or got selected for the role because of talent.

Great review as always Mickey! I personally adored this production, I felt amazed when I walked into the Hippodrome at the extent they’d reached with set design. I completely understand the view on how the set doesn’t fully replicate its budget, but I think for a touring production in which there are weekly slots in various places, I was impressed on the usage of the TVs and the resources it expresses. I personally wouldn’t expect a Broadway design level for this minor scale, but I get it! I also love the songs funnily enough, I agree that most of them may be forgettable and not necessary but some were great, particularly Bowie’s No Control. Will be heading back for my second viewing of this in a few weeks, had such fun embracing my inner child as an adult! 🫶🏻

I definitely think Lewis Cornay pulls the show together. I gave a small analysis of his character performance in my review, but he definitely feels like a character that is younger than Slaters performance, which makes him instead feel as if SB's out of his depth and really sold that lack of confidence SB has - I think that slight change in characterisation made all the difference. I honestly think that he manages to be the heart of the show well.
I thought potentially my opinion of Gareth Gates as Squidward might be controversial, but it seems as if you have a similar enough opinion. I *think* Gates was directed to play a slightly older version of the character, so it contrasts more with Cornay's more youthful performance, and I'd hazard a guess that is the reason why, at least for me, the performance doesn't really gel with me. Which is a shame, "I'm Not A Loser" is one of my favourite songs from the soundtrack, and Gates' performance took me out of that (it wasn't bad, just did not gel with me in the way it should have).
The monitors on each side of the stage had issues of glitching out and going to standby during the performance I saw, which definitely didn't help. I didn't necessarily feel like the set design was "cheap", but perhaps that's because I wasn't comparing any of that to the previous performances. I was sitting near the back of the Hippadrome though, so perhaps the effect of it feeling cheaper was lessened by being further away in the theatre? Not sure.
Glad you gave a review of the show, was eagerly awaiting it! I might go and watch the show in Wolverhampton with Tom Read Wilson and see how that compares to Gareth Gates performance.

The theatre industry is really in a very, very precarious position at present. We need to manage our expectations in terms of visual impact because this is not the 1980s, the money for helicopters and chandeliers is behind us, at least for now.
I would fat rather watch a great performance on one set anyway but I certainly get that SpongeBob doesn’t necessarily add up to much without all the bells and whistles.
The Catch 22 is that the vast majority of big sellers (or potential big sellers) rely on a fair amount of visual oomph, simply because the writing often doesn’t hold up to much under scrutiny. And musicals that are so strong that they could be done with a black box and two chairs aren’t the ones based on huge movies, TV shows or recording artist’s back catalogues. We are in a transitional time, but we should expect cheap (looking) tours for some time

Yea the set was lacking a bit, but a lot of the broadway set was sparse and relied on small cutouts. Considering Wicked and Hamilton have an average value of £90 for pretty much all of the seats in the theatre for their new tours it was nice seeing so many different people have access to this show because the price made it accessible. If the set takes a hit because of that, then so be it I think

Gotta wholeheartedly disagree with the criticism of the score, for a few reasons. There is a reason the score was done in the way it was. It was because SpongeBob as a television show is quite eclectic in nature and the creators felt the score should mirror that. The composer, Tom Kitt was heavily involved with the writers to create the songs and then to arrange them in a way that was both eclectic and fit the narrative and style of the show. On a subjective level I also think most of the songs are great with a few exceptions. I definitely wish the set design was more like the Broadway version, but I enjoyed the different designs for the costuming.

I saw it last night in London and I’m in perhaps a state of mourning.
I found the show through your video about it filming in Plymouth (right on my doorstep at the time!) and I watched up to the end of the second song in the pro shot. I adore Bikini Bottom Day and No Control.
3 years later, I guess I had extrapolated those songs into an idea of what the show is that it isn’t. Or the UK tour isn’t.
It did feel cheap. And the plot sort of plateaus after No Control. I guess I had imagined things gradually escalating as the threat of the volcano got closer.
I didn’t watch SpongeBob growing up, I got really into the world of the show in itself. And I think that’s been smoothed away. Just so much of the charm seems to have been lost with the new direction.

Saw it yesterday and loved it all. Went with my 9yr old who adored all of it too. Casting was fantastic, they were all so strong in their roles, we saw Tom not Gareth and my one criticism of the entire production in fact was that his costume wasn't elevated enough, yes he had 4 legs, and the physical comedy he pulled off with that was great, but I found him visually dull. When he was stationary particularly, there was no visual hook that made him unmistakably squidworth, which was a shame - a head piece that nodded to squidworths bald peanut shape and monobrow would have done it much better than slicked down hair ever could.
In contrast to this reviewer, I felt the style of actors/musicians all on view, minimal set pieces and representative costuming, with so much breaking of the 4th wall, was all very deliberate and almost brechtian, and I loved it for that - you were completely absorbed yet totally aware of the statements being made, and the fact you were watching theatre. I definitely also disagree with the criticisms around the representation of the media. Through a screen, sensationalising, distanced from the realities, perfectly pitched I felt, I had no idea who he was, but totally got it.
In all a wonderful show, that masterfully straddled cartoon to stage show, to actually message, that had me grinning throughout. I'd highly recommend others to watch if they get the opportunity.

This show is secretly super deceptive. It looks like this fun wacky mismatched mess that just WORKS, but as a result it’s a very precarious thing to keep in that right zone. I watch the Nickelodeon proshot way too much for my own good. Even on Broadway I think there’s a lot of things that are weaker than others: there are songs I don’t like, their Mt. Humongous was similarly unimpressive (gorgeous, Ethan Slater killed it, but equally small feeling and mime-heavy in my opinion), and the plot does have some depths that work for people of all ages that you have to hit with the right tone to avoid it being too kiddie. I’m also curious how they didn’t have Perch Perkins as a character? Who sings No Control? Perch is shockingly important to the plot so having him not interacting onstage seems like a shot in the foot.
I feel like as a result it makes it near impossible to adapt for touring or smaller audiences such as school plays or deviating from the original direction without it falling like a house of cards.
Edit: okay I’ve hit the end and I’m gonna fight you on Squidward’s song- it’s a delight and I find myself drawn to watch that part of the proshot more than any other part. Maybe the guy isn’t great but that song IS

    • @mollymcdade4031
      @mollymcdade4031 Před rokem

The UK tour has Perch as a pre-recorded performer (Good Morning Britain host Richard Arnold) on one of the screens so it looks like he’s broadcasting on TV. No Control is still sung by him but it’s more electronic-sounding (which I don’t like as much because a lot of lyrics get lost)

I enjoyed the show quite a bit when I saw it, my only question has to be about the lyric changes, especially for the song 'Chop to the Top' where they've changed practically all the lyrics except for the chorus in the tour. Bikini Bottom Day and No Control as well as quite a few of the other songs had changes, and it's not like they wouldn't have made sense in the UK, they just seem to be different just because which did lowkey ruin 'Chop to the Top' for me as it's a song I've always wanted to hear live and it was basically the remains of my favourite song from the show, not the song itself. Would love to know the reasons for the changes for sure!

    • @mollymcdade4031
      @mollymcdade4031 Před rokem +2

If you’re comparing it to the cast album, the lyric changes were made between the Chicago to Broadway transfer - they only did the original cast album for the Chicago tryout (which is also why Going Gets Tough changed massively to include the speed rap segment)

I have never been a fan of musicals with a mixture of different composers. I can not think of any show done like that that was hugely successful. There is just no cohesiveness to a score like that. It needs one composer. What composer would I have picked to write the score ? Maybe Andrew Lippa. Or Tom Kitt...maybe even JRB. Possibly Paul Gordon . William Finn.
