  • In this episode of the All Things Business - The Podcast, Frazer meets Rory Sutherland, the accidental marketeer and Classics aficionado, takes us on a whimsical detour from the traditional paths of marketing into the labyrinthine alleyways of direct marketing and psychological insights.
He fell into advertising rather serendipitously after a classical education, where Latin and Greek tragically underprepared him for the world of coupons and direct mail. He shares his journey with the ease of a raconteur, peppering the conversation with anecdotes and epiphanies.

Terrific guest. One - small - thing. The Model T Ford was, in fact, available in many colours, but Henry Ford said that thing about only being available in black to try and avoid customers asking for colour. Black was much cheaper to paint. But if you asked for a colour - any colour - they did oblige .

NONONO The car was only offered in black from 1914-1925, however before and after that various models of the vehicle could be purchased in a variety of colors including blue, red, grey, and green.

Rory, I think you should consider Hilary Mantel for your dinner party. She really studied the late, possibly evil, genius Thomas Cromwell. He was a business genius and must have understood marketing and life itself very well. I can, and do listen to Wolf Hall over and over. Ben Miles brings a new emphasis to it compared to Simon Slater (who I adored in the earlier Audible release).

The book name isn’t how to write well, it’s writing that works.
