  • Apollo 12 - Trans Lunar Injection (Full Mission 02)
    The second video in the full mission series of Apollo 12. Earth Orbit - the crew and MCC check that the lightning strike has not damaged any systems onboard the spacecraft or the booster. The platform is aligned and preparations are made for TLI. President Nixon talks to the launch control team.
    This second part of the Apollo 12 mission contains the transcript for the air to ground, photos of the launch and footage of the LCC gathering of Pres Nixon. Where real time video is not available I have used Orbiter Spaceflight Simulator to depict how things might have looked.
    All video, audio and photos are courtesy NASA.

    I love how Commander Conrad is calling out the numbers after the lighting anomaly .
    He was cool and accurate in an EXTREMELY unusual situation .
    I think the other guys were just giggling and aghast at the possibilities .

    I'm loving these videos. I remember being woken up for key events in the Apollo program. Planted on the couch and watched grainy black and white pictures and commentary that I could barely understand. Now, being a stickler for understanding things on a very technical level, these videos have helped me catch up with what I missed. Great work.

      Fun fact: the ENEMA program handled clearing the software scheduler and could interact badly with the P00 startup program, leading to this comment in the Apollo software code: "DO NOT USE ENEMA WITHOUT CONSULTING P00 PEOPLE"

    At about 52:12 Pete Conrad mentions the idea that the lightning strike that hit them might well have been their own static discharge. Pretty cool how early in the mission they narrowed it down to the most likely cause. And awfully brave to head to the moon having taken that sort of a jolt.

    • @bigdrew565
      @bigdrew565 Před 2 lety

      That's what the two revs in low earth orbit were meant for. Make sure everything is in shape . The only concern they really had was that the lightning strike screwed with the parachutes. Wasn't anything anyone could do about it, so they proceeded with the mission, the logic being that they'd be just as dead if they aborted and the chutes didn't work versus eight days later.. I think the only lasting effect was the gage for the partial pressure co2 was knocked out.

    The ironic thing is that the rocket TRIGGERED the lightning. The weather was not stormy at the Cape, just socked in and very rainy, BUT, unknown to all, the clouds had a fair amount of static charge in them. Not enough to jump to ground on it's own. The rockets exhaust provided a perfect path to the ground (the 2 strokes of lightning ran down the plume and struck the tower)

    Hi, relatively new to the channel, just wondering what the average time I can expect to wait between uploads for these 'Full Mission' series is?

    • @lunarmodule5
      @lunarmodule5  Před 7 lety +2

      Hi Jack...glad to hear you have found the channel and hope you are enjoying the content. The answer to your question is in two parts. Firstly, it just depends which point in the mission the next video is....for instance, the launch sequences etc for part one took 2 weeks to complete...whereas part 2 only took 3 days. The next part is taking longer to complete because of the edit with the TV transmissions and wanting to show the s4b sep from several angles. The audio has to be edited for the gaps and all the simulator sequences captured, then all the captions have to be added. It just takes time.Secondly,I have family commitments and work full time, alongside producing a radio show and playing golf badly and flying online on flight simulator weekly....so time is precious and I put in as much time as I can into the series. This all means that Apollo 12 will take over a year to complete. I hope you will stay around and enjoy the mission and the wait for the next one! Regards LM5
