  • Yamaha's DX7 was a game-changing synthesizer. It outsold its competitors by a factor of ten, and was so ubiquitous that it appeared on a large majority of every hit song in the 80's. There are tens of thousands of great DX7 patches out there for the downloading. In this video I talk about the history of the DX7, demonstrate some factory patches on my Montage M, then demonstrate how to take DX7 patch files and load them into your MODX, Montage and Montage M.

    That’s good ol’ Yamaha for ya! Get you 90% of the way to awesome, then add 10% frustration and limitations to reward us for paying a premium price. Thanks, Yamaha! We love you! (Now, back to programming my Motif ES 7 and Montage 6 setup.)

    Hi, Scott. I see in your video where you mentioned the FM file converter.. yes, it only allows you to place 10 files, but the files can be a single patch or a whole bank. I have used this site for a while and it works great. Am able to have a set of 10 banks of 32 patches each in one montage YFMC file. If you want to change the initial patches in the banks you can use DEXED to modify the banks. Then, dump the banks in the website in the order you want the banks. Am able to have for example the original Roms 1A - 4B (8 banks) and added the DX7IIFD voice (2 banks) making it 10 files. Converted the files and created a YFMC file that the Montage can load as a full library set. 32 patches x 10 banks = 320 patches in the library. The only problem is that the files do not get the aftertouch parameters. Let me know if you try this.. have a great day!. Mmm. I might just make a video about this...😂

      Correct. I think I mentioned that when I loaded them into the Montage, you could see I had 300-odd patches in that library that I had imported.

      @@ScottsSynthStuff yes. That's right. So, that's why I went to check it at the moment I was watching your video and did a full conversion with 10 patches and also with 10 banks.
      And yes it only takes 10 files but just depends on what you load. I also combined them and only 10 were allowed.. hey Scott, (sorry if call you scott. Feels like I know you for a long time.. it happens with media) anyway love your channel. You are always bringing that detail comparison of things and you are not afraid to tell it like it is... my channel is small, but it's there.. one question for sure. In the Montage M8x; using FMX, if a dx7 patch is loaded it only uses 6 operators. In the Montage 7 or MODX 7 two operators are left unused. So; In the new Montage, how many are left unused? 122?

    Great video, thats for all the work. The vast number of FM organ patches is great. Would love to hear a few of the stock DX7 Organ patches going though the new VRM Rotary Effect releasd with the M Series.
    The YC was to first to include the new and improved VRM Rotary effect and is seems now its available in the Montage M series.
    The YC also includes an number of FM Organ patches (limited to a hand full of FM algorithms) based on carriers using: (Flute (sine: Hammond like), BritishTransistor (Square : Vox like), Italian Transistor: Farfisa like) as well the FM Color type) . The Montage series FMX provides provisions for editing any of the operations waveforms using SKIRT as well as feedback to simulate Square, Saw waveforms for operators and carriers. The Montage M also includes the VRM Rotary effect used in the YC, but haven't seem many CZcams Content providers talk much about the new VRM Rotary effect with classic FM organ patches and how it compares the the YC.
    Thankfully, the M series includes the VRM YC Rotary effect now. The VRM Rotary is one of main reasons why I'd like to make the move from Montage to Montage M series. The YC61 does includes a Waterfall keyboard. All the YCs include 9 drawbars verses 8. I'll still go with a Montage M for all the addtional FMX flexibility, ANX, Effect and USB Audio to DAW capabilities
    Thanks for another great video.

  • @classicarcadeamusementpark4242

    One of the great things about the Montage & MODX is it's ability to import DX-7 sounds. It also offers additional FM features, built-in effects, and a much better touch screen user interface.
    My MODX replaced my DX-7. I had the TX-7 table top version.
    The DX-7 by the way came out in 1983 rather than 1982. I tend to think it was more like 1984 by the time everyone heard of it and that it sold in big numbers in the USA, but I'm not positive.

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  Před 5 měsíci +1

      It was released in 1983, but actually built in 1982, which is what I was talking about then, as the sound designers were using it to create sounds in 1982.

    Thanks for your videos and all stuff you are sharing with us.
    I have one question for you.
    Can I export my FM patches from Montage and load them in Native Instruments FM8?
    Any way to do that?
    Thank you in advance.

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Completely different engine, so while I can't say it's impossible, it would take a developer a LOT of work to do...and the patches would never sound exactly the same.

    They’re not categorized and there’s no way to categorize them without a PC editor right?

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  Před 5 měsíci

      You could categorize them on the synth - and realistically, that's the only way to do them, because without listening to them, you really aren't going to know what a lot of them sound like.

    • @xp50player
      @xp50player Před 5 měsíci

      @@ScottsSynthStuff - can you do that? I thought you can only categorize a patch by starting from an existing patch with that category already assigned to it.

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  Před 5 měsíci

      @@xp50player You can...but you can't save it back into the library, you have to save it as a new performance, which you can then compile into a library. So not ideal.

  • @Coowallsky
    @Coowallsky Před 4 měsíci

    You can do more than 10 “patches” with the converter. You’re confusing .syx files with patches. If the .syx files have 32 patches…that’s 320 patches in that library. There was a limit on the previous version on the number of .syx files but it was higher. Probably 20 for a total of 640 patches.

    That's very interesting about 4 days and (2) programmers. This is what I've noticed from Yamaha from back then until now. They are brilliant engineers but they can't program their way out of a paper bag. They have always been rather lame at providing showcase voices almost like they don't know how to operate their own gear. I bet those (2) programmers were very proud to hear hundreds of their voice creations on the radio. It's very ironic that one can build the system to play the sound but doesn't really know how to program it themselves. Even on Yamaha gear today often we hear the same 40 year old which is fine if that's what you want but I'm betting 0.05% of the original Montage voices haven't been fully exploited. Now we have the M which in 7 more years will not even be at 0.005% considering we now have ANx and PAT. We really need a computer routine to randomize all parameters like AI and start inventing new voices at record speeds.

    I really don't get why Yamaha seems to deliberately want to destroy the usefulness of their own Synths and Keyboards. That thing with the DX7 sound converter -> Modx/Montage libraries is utter crap. Kinda bit of the same that they actually did what I wanted with the new Genos 2 .. put an FM engine inside,.. Yay touchdown I thaught ... but why oh why Yamaha is it only working in preset mode. The keyboard have just shy of 15Gb user storage. You could fit ALL the available DX7 SysEx banks on the net in there and only make a dent in the available memory. You would propably delete 90% of it again if you actually had time to go thru all the sounds. I do get that most people using an arranger isn't gonna spent time becomming an FM synth pro sound editor .. but I think that they disrespect their "arranger users" in thinking that they only need a preset version. Fair enough that they don't put an editor IN the keyboard, but they could just make it able to load sysex patches. It's not that it's rocket science to load up some DX7 sounds in DEXed, edit some settings and resave it, or send it to a compatible synth like the Montage/Modx/Kronos/Nautilus .. and propably other synths that can load DX sysex directly. Someone need to give who controls this shit at Yamaha a shake

    • @mrdali67
      @mrdali67 Před 5 měsíci

      It was one of the things I found fun with the Kronos .. to load some of my old sounds from the TX802 and see what I could do with them in the MOD7 engine and add effects that lifts any of the standard DX sounds by just adding some effects and then comes all the new posibilities with a modern FM engine wether it's MOD7 in the Korgs or FMX in the Montage/Modx
