  • The Next Pandemic Could Make Antibiotics Useless | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Drug resistant superbugs are a major cause of increasingly preventable deaths in the world. Data suggests that these infections are the reason of at least 1.2 million global deaths annually. Infections that can easily be treated are now becoming hard to combat. A 2019 study revealed that India is among the most vulnerable countries in the world. Experts say the overuse of antibiotics could make the medicines ineffective. According to a survey conducted on 10,000 patients by the National Centre for Disease Control- more than 50% Indians were given antibiotics as a preventative drug. It was only in 45% cases that an antibiotic was taken as a medicine to treat infection. Such practices fuel the rise in cases of drug-resistant superbugs in India, and around the world. Palki Sharma tells you more.

Why do Indian doctors issue so many prescriptions for unnecessary anti biotics? Are Indian doctors Irresponsible, incompetent, malicious or just greedy and in it only for the money?
When it all goes bad as it will we can blame India for this up coming disaster as India blamed China for Covid 19.

@@arthurlincoln9093 The first rule taught to all doctors in any medical college is to ensure their own safety and also to ensure that they have enough to sustain your family before helping others. If you think doctors take "high fees" you do not understand the effort they have put in to reach that position - and thus these fees are justified. Moreover, the high drug resistance in India is due to the fact that many people feel that they do not require to take the full medication prescribed and when they do not show any symptoms, they simply stop the medication without doctor's recommendation. This is not a doctor's fault - it is the fault of the general public in India.

To be a doctor one has to spent huge amount of money, esp.to get educated abroad. Their hope is recover the money invested by some means. The pharma companies comes to aid here. They do sponsorship for doctors for prescribing their drugs, second is the hospital themselves coz if they want to have good repuation the patient should get a relief soon. The medical shops also wants more sales revenue and profit. The last, nobody has got time to cure and recover naturally. All these factors put together increase drug consumption in general.

This is true, they give antibiotic and steroid medication for any reason. A dermatologist gives steroid cream for simple rash. An eye doctor prescribes antibiotics worth a month for any eye issue as they always assume it’s conjunctivitis. If you have pain in any part of your body, it is very likely that a doctor will prescribe an anti biotic with a pain killer, just to rule out everything. None of these medications even need a prescription when you go to a pharmacy, which is there on every street corner. If you have any infection people just take their “favourite” anti-biotic or whatever suits them, regardless of the type of infection it is …

There is no need to panic yet. Bacteria can only hold so much genetic information, and we have discovered that when bacteria develop immunity to antibiotics, they simultaneously lose ability to fight off bacteria killing viruses. So with proper research we can basically trap bacteria into either being killed by antibiotics or being killed by viruses that only hunt for bacteria

Thanks for bringing up this topic. It is an important issue for everyone to understand. It is simple but counter intuitive and hard to understand for many people. Please also include how easy it is to get the prescription medication in India compare to the rest of the world which is a wrong behavior for this reason. New antibiotics are very cost intensive and time consuming and we need to avoid bugs becoming super bugs. Medical community also will have to take the charge in changing this behavior. Government can also play a big role by cracking down on this behavior. Again, thank you.
