What I heard from a coffee manufacturer, those 3 in 1 coffee is using a rejected coffee beans from the coffee plantation. The manufacturer use certain additives to make the taste consistent, so any good or bad coffee beans has no issue for them. I’ve stop drinking 3 in 1 for years and making my own coffee using French press, personal espresso pump, or just a simple v drip. Always drink black coffee, no sugar, no creamer or milk.

I'm very enthusiastic about coffee, and have always regarded instant coffee as filthy poison. Some of the products we see here (locally the Vietnamese ones were the first, now I can buy a wide variety of 3-in-1 types from many countries) are drinkable, but I still regard them as "emergency coffee"! It's a big step up, and that emergency DOES occur! For me this might be if I have an intense busy job, or am taking a long road-trip in bad weather. There have been times when I was tired and cold, out in the country somewhere... and a little portable stove and a pack of instant coffee seemed like a real treat!

  • @Schjoenz

I was used to consuming 3n1 coffee until 4th quarter of last year. I felt bloated and lost the appetite to eat proper meal. I was sure it was the 3n1 because I only get bloated the next day when I tried skipping coffee for a day or 2.. I used to drink 3-5 cups a day. Around October last year, I switched back to black coffee, drank about 2-3 cups a day, and I was happy. No more bloating and I even slept better. But then I started craving for 3n1 again. What I did was I mixed an instant black coffee, muscovado sugar, and a bit of instant creamer and put it in a jar. I get a consistent taste the way I want because I measure how much of each content I add. I still get added fats because of the creamer but not as much as the 3n1 that I can't control. I only consume 3n1 during travels if I have no access to brewed coffee.. Coffee is LIFE for someone like me.

Any product that has "hydrogenated" anything on the ingredients list, we place back on the store shelf. Powdered coffee creamer is on our DNP (Do Not Purchase ) list. A little sugar may not destroy you but I also avoid that. To keep it simple, I support local coffee farmers where I have gone into semi-retirement in the Philippines. A bag of roasted beans, a means to grind the beans, and good water are all you really must have. Filtering is nice but optional. A few years ago, I could purchase coffee beans and roast them to my personal preference. Might do that again soon?

It's not hard to just have a jar of good freeze dried instant coffee, quality sugar and milk (if you really need it) in your kitchen. Literally takes 2mins to put it all together in the morning or whenever you need a coffee fix.
Or even better, get coffee beans, get it ground up and buy a French press. It's the less extreme version of what the barista was presenting because who has the time for that!!!

11:00 stay away from the low sugar stuff. They replace sugar with artificial sweetener, or HFCS which is much sweeter than regular sugar so they can maintain the taste while using less. HFCS cause metabolic syndrome. It is one of the main reasons Americans are so fat. Massive US gov subsidy leads to an overproduction of corn, so they searched for how to use it, and that's how we get HFCS that is so cheap.

I brew my own coffee using French press and then make my own cup with heavy cream and stevia. I am not a fan of instant 3 in 1. I always knew that’s not healthy.

Every action has the price.. in term of your time preparation n health issue down the road... but if a drinker is an exercise freak, 3 in 1 is no issue. Drip drip coffee, drive me crazy... too long to prepare.

The sheets of plastic with print on them, remind me of how I had to teach using the OHP. But why are these being used in this programme, when there is Power Point or equivalent that the screen could project?

I quit 3-in-1 Oldtown (Classic/Original or the Hazelnut) about 2 years ago as I notice it has high sugar. I switched to Moccona and fresh milk and no sugar.

What about educating also on the health & safety aspects like, for example, the acrylamide (a carcinogen) content in the 3-in-1 coffee relative to other: (1) forms of coffee; & (2) brands of 3-in-1 coffee?

Most 3-in-1 instant coffees have very little coffee but loaded with sugar, creamer with hydrogenated oil and other emulsiffers). It's like slow poison!

@@se7enzee444 Agree. A broad-based educational isn't one that purveys merely a single aspect, in this case, of pushing the advertising and promotional view. A consideration of pros and cons is the only way for people to make good INFORMED decisions.
