  • Singapore’s hot weather is probably one of our country’s most defining features given our location near the equator. Yet, studies have shown that less than one in four Singaporeans use sunscreen daily. Is the sun in Singapore truly damaging enough to warrant using sunscreen daily?
In this Talking Point episode, host Steven Chia finds out just what the sun can do to our skin and if there’s any kind of sunscreen that’s best at keeping us safe from Singapore’s sunny skies.

Well it really isn’t that expensive and sunscreen isn’t really that easy to formulate and paying for all the tests that need to be done for new sunscreens and so on isn’t cheap so it’ll most likely never really get any cheaper plus so many sunscreens are putting actual ingredients that you’d find in regular skincare into sunscreen so making it cheaper also just doesn’t make sense lol when its actual skincare but also sunscreen you shouldn’t care about it costing as much as regular skincare products.

@@pattycarljackson I get what you mean and you're absolutely right. But still, there are thousands of people that can't even afford the cheapest sunscreen, and we know most of time the cheapest ones are the ones with bad formulas. So I think mostly they have to make bigger tubes, even more when we're supposed to apply sunscreen every two hours. I was advised to use more sunscreen than usual but I only apply once a day cause otherwise I wouldn't be able to afford any sunscreen.

I would say get spf 50 at least. Since most are lazy and wont re apply. You also have to re apply every 2 hours at least. Also there is such a thing as upf clothing. Where it has tightly woven fabric that blocks the sun. Most fabrics block the sun no problem. But some are really thin/cheap/see through. Also upf fabrics are normally thin and for sporting so they can keep you cool and block the sun.
Also gotta wear sunglasses to protect your eyes. Polarized lenses are the best. And you can wear upf 50 hats as well. Also just wearing long sleeve, long pants, light colored fabrics work. And just avoiding being in the sun, stick to the shade. Also you can use upf umbrellas.

A lot of people think wearing sunscreen indoor is crazy or not necessary, but for me, it did made a difference. I've been wearing sunscreen everyday since my late teens. I'm in my 30s now and still no wrinkle or hyperpigmentation. However, I did skipped sunscreen on days I don't go out. Last year, I started working from home due to Covid and lockdown, so I didn't wear sunscreen for 2-3 months. I got noticeably tanner, and my foundation was 1-2 shades too light for me when I finally wear it one day to go out. It truly baffled me because it was when Fall was transitioning to Winter and I usually get half a shade lighter. I didn't immediately link it to sunscreen, but after researching about it, I found out about wearing sunscreen indoor. So I started wearing it like how I used to and voila, within a month, I was back to my original shade. It was wild but it's a lesson I'm glad I learned.

If u want to protect your skin from the sun without spending a lot of money on expensive sunscreen.. here are some important tips for u....
*i know sunscreens are not affordable for everyone because they are very expensive u know,so how can u minimize to apply this sunscreen everyday here are some tips for u...
1)u do not need to wear sunscreen on all over your body if u follow this rule,,,
Wear full sleeve light colour(white and yellow are the best)cotton dress whenever u go under the sun..
2)only apply the sunscreen on the exposed area like face, neck, ears,on the knuckles, fingers etc..
Never forget to apply a good moisturizer or hydrating serum or gel(like hyaluronic acid serum or gel) before applying the sunscreen on your skin..
3)use an umbrella or a hat under the very hot sun, black umbrellas are the best to protect your skin from the uv rays..
4)also you need to take care of your feet,if u wear a open sleepers shoes then wear sunscreen over there, if u wear a full pant with a shoe then it will be good for u and u do not need to wear sunscreen on your legs and feet..
5)daily skincare is good for your skin
*daytime skin care-(in summer):wash your face with a soap free mild foaming face wash,if u have dry or sensitive skin wash your face with normal cold water or Cetaphil gentle cleanser, then apply a water based moisturizer (like nmf e lotion) or hyaluronic acid serum or gel ,then apply your sunscreen(spf 50,pa+++,zinc oxide sunscreens are the best)
***night time skin care(for summer)-it is very important to properly clean your face in the night time, if u have make up or no make up i do not care,u always need double cleansing in the evening time, apply your oil based cleansing bulm or normal coconut or olive oil on your skin massage it then wipe it off with a damp cotton pad or a towel, make sure your make up and sun cream are gone, then wash your face with a foaming face wash or a geltle cleanser like cetaphil....
Then apply a vitamin c face serum on damp skin, then apply a water based moisturizer on it ..u are done,u can use retinol or retin a cream twice a week by mixing it with your moisturizer for anti aging....
&*******for winter skincare(morning)-wash your face with room temparature water in the morning ,u do not need any cleanser or face wash in the morning of winter...
    Do double moisturising, how?
U need a lotion base moisturizer and a cream base thick moisturizer u can mix them and apply it directly on your face and hands, then use sunscreen on it,
***night time skin care for winter_u need double cleansing first like summer night time skin care, then apply vitamin c serum, then do double moisturising on it,if u have dry to very dry skin u can apply a little bit of vaseline petroliam jelly after doing double moisturising process,
    Be safe ,stay healthy....

I also get info from other radiations such as gamma rays etc. In Sweden they still call melasma spots age spots. I use clothes as protection and when necceseary I use sunscreen with combo filter- it's important to read ingredients and understand the amount of sunscreen needed to get to the protection and don't forget that everything you put under or over the sunscreen may effect it's formula thus compromising it's protection. Expensive brands that are good often times sell thier product rebranded as a pharmacy chain product - cheaper but equally tested dermatologic. Look at the bottles and read factory, producers and ingredients.

You forgot to delve deeper into the pa++ rating system, Steve. You talked about UVB and how it relates to burns, you talked about skin cancer, but the relation between the pa++ rating and skin cancer was neglected and I'd argue, is more important. For instance, how many pluses is enough for skin cancer protection? SPF 30 is just fine to use over SPF 100 so what about pa? Pa++ is a lot cheaper than pa++++ after all.
The topic of chemical sunscreen downsides was also not discussed. Most chemical sunscreens available have active ingredients that are readily absorbed into the bloodstream while Australia and Hawaii have banned most of them for the damage they cause to the oceans. People have been living without sunscreen for thousands of years. Melanoma rates have gone UP, not down since sunscreen was discovered. It's much more important to eat lots of fruits and vegetables that contain antioxidants that naturally protect your skin from damage from the inside. Also, eat more omega-3 fatty acids and less omega 6's. This ratio is very important when it comes to the health and protection of your skin. If I go out in the sun I wear a hat and long sleeves. It's OK to put a little on your face if you want to avoid wrinkles, but slathering on tons of sunscreen every day is just unnecessary and expensive. Many brands have toxic chemicals in them too. If you are going to the beach, then you should probably put on sun block, but at least choose one that doesn't have toxic chemicals in them (I am a nutritionist by the way).

The amount you need to apply is borderline ridiculous for everyday use under traditional guidelines which ties into cost and how it makes people look . 3 most sunscreens are uncomfortable to wear even at lower quantities unless you spend larger amounts. This combo along with no visible need from the consumers pov on cloudy days to need to wear it it’s a non starter for most.

Most European sunscreens are thick, gloopy, and shiny but they have high standards in terms of protection and are most often water resistant. For my face I use Riemann’s P20 for kids, for my body I use Altruist SPF 50 (they both have a PPD of more than 50)

Seriously?? The Roche-Posay lady telling us to use 10 ML every time we apply sunscreen, yet their bottles are often only 50 ML with an exorbitant price tag! The price of their 50 ML bottle is $25, that's crazy. Say you'd only apply once every day (the bare minimum), that would be a hefty $1825 a year for minimum protection according to this sales lady. I hate it.

If it actually does what it claims to be doing and when I see positive effects at an age where signs of ageing are usual like 50s per say then I'll be making sure my offsprings make wearing sunscreen a norm just like it's a norm to brush teeth. I mean, if I get to preserve youthful looking skin why the heck not right ?

Both the sales of sunscreens and the rate of melanoma grew considerably in recent years and there's a correlation between vitamin d deficiency and skin cancer. Let's talk about that! Let's talk osteoporosis! Sunscreen is important but it has to be used appropriately as vitamin D levels are FAR more important 4 your health than wrinkle management.

35 looking 25 here. I've used factor 50 religiously, everyday (and yup, even when indoors) since I was 21. People don't realise that 90% of skin aging is caused by sunlight damage. We are a culture obsessed with youth, and yet most spend a lot of money on various skin products but neglect the most obvious solution: sunscreen. Plus the health benefits are numerous: protecting immune system; avoiding skin cancer + feeling better about your appearance as you age. Slaver up and protect your protective barrier: YOUR SKIN! :)

You need to realize that people died in the day from diseases and sun cancer wasn’t a huge concern for death, and usually wasn’t even diagnosed for those who died from it. (If you also think about lifespan of humans, they used to be significant shorter. )That’s like saying “okay humans have lived for millions of years without sunscreen, why need it now?” It’s because we’re more informed on things that risk our health, and human life expectancy is now higher than ever. It’s better to put on sunscreen then risk getting skin cancer in the near future. The reason your skin becomes darker in the sun is due to the fact of sun damage, it’s your body’s response to protect cell DNA. It makes more than enough sense to put on sunscreen.

Just to clarify, 10ml for the face and neck isn't correct. The FDA SPF testing regulates at 2 mg per square centimeter. So, for your face, it should be around 1/4 teaspoon (for the face) and 1/2 teaspoon for the neck. So, in total it will be 3/4 teaspoon for the face and neck. So, (by my calculations of 5ml/tsp.) it will be 3.75 mL. So in a la roche posay sunscreen (50ml), by my calculations you'll have around 13-14 uses and not the 5 uses as the product manager said.
