      In the books sure. The series kinda shits on that. Made it really comical when Rand meets Loial the first time and they use the book phrase "you look like an Aielman" (or something to that effect). How can you tell Loial? Coz, Rand literally walked past a whole bunch of tall gingers just to get to the same inn as you. So it sure as hell wasn't the physical look. Eugh. The whole show is like this. Almost entirely departed from the source material in the worst way, but paradoxically keeping true to odd snippets here and there.

    I really thought that they cast Aviendha when I saw the actress for Elaine…so why not cast a more blonde actress for Elaine, cast her as Aviendha and be so much closer to the actual characters?
    Choosing a POC actress for an Aiel even goes against the TV-Series established world building, because Rand is mistaken as an Aiel…not Perrin.
    So what absolutely disgusts me is when they change things from the books, but forget to follow through, … like with Perrin killing his (non-existent) wife and then just failing to address any trauma because….the writers forgot about it and just followed the books.
    How can you fail to see that race swapping almost HALF the characters makes it really hard to establish ethnic groups from certain regions?! That‘s so important for the world of WOT that you can look at someone and basically place them near to their place of origin….but no, if you make every place ‚diverse‘, then you loose all of these separate identities, which is exactly the opposite of what your message should be…yes, everyone has equal rights, but they are not all the same…that is boring.
    Anybody find it hilarious to hear about the ‚blood of Manetheren‘ when you have a black dude, a black girl, an Indian chick, and two white dudes riding with Moraine? They obviously do not have the same heritage going back only a few generations.

    These folks who think the most interesting thing about a character, especially an heroic one, is their sexuality need to be run out of "entertainment." Yes, sexual relations can be used to explore character, but that's not what these folks do. (They'd need creativity and a little effort. I've always wondered about this insane approach to rewriting a beloved franchise. The books will remain bright stars in the imagination of their fans whereas the tv series will be forgotten as soon as it's done and no one, not even its "fans", will remember it when its gone. So these people corrupting legendary stories are making things that won't be sought out and held up as examples of story telling done right. They are literally here today and gone tomorrow. Personally if I were doing something like this I'd want to have a well regarded legacy. Not some disposable garbage.

Not wanting to hurt his feelings. But when he's not around they'll talk amongst themselves about how it's not very good and how Rafe wasn't a great writer and how no one even remembers it except him. Then maybe he'll overhear their conversation one day and feel super sad, realizing at last what we saw all along. I know this type of person, they are myopic beyond belief. If a loved one isn't shouting it in their face they will just dismiss negative reviews as the critics being wrong and stupid, and won't even bother listening. Their whole basis for relationship changes is either that the author never indicted any kind of relationship or he might have slightly hinted at it if we squint our eyes or they just said fuck it and changed the words to twist it into being a relationship they wanted to force in. Like look if you want characters like that then the writer of this series is more than welcome to go off and create their own fantasy world but hey that would require creativity and actual hard work. Otherwise, the One Power is specifically divided into two halves because a man that channels with a woman becomes infinitely more powerful than either by themselves. The show just makes a mockery of the books and changes as much as possible while keeping names the same. The part you don't learn until later in the series is that while men directly broke the world with the imperfect seal and the tainting of Saidin, the women are equally to blame because they wanted to use the Choeden Kal and couldn't make a compromise with the Male Aes'Sedai.

    I unfortunately never read the books prior to watching the series, but I'm currently on book 4 and enjoying it more than watching a few minutes of a series that's mediocre at best. As you've said in your videos on the first season, where they followed the book, it's good, but whenever they divert from it, they seem to lose character development, story lines, good writing etc. The change to Aviendha is really dumb, because Rand is supposed to look like the Aiel, and now that's gone too. Watching the first season I was confused a lot of the time, because they failed to explain a lot of stuff that's clear in the books. Like Rand being different from the rest of Edmond's Field and being mistaken for an Aielman throughout the book. I personally think they should've kept Elyas, Rand and Mat fooling around playing gleemen in Four Kings (which makes them realise they need to be even more careful), the parade with Logain in Caemlyn where Rand meets Elyane and Gawyn and they should've left the Amyrlin Seat for the second season, to show that now the plot thickens even more. I get that you change stuff from books to screen, which is also what Peter Jackson did with the LotR trilogy. The main difference here is that PJ, the team and actors had a lot of respect for the Tolkien, his messages, the characters and tried to keep true to the essence of the story. This series is just virtue signalling all the way, which is unfortunately going to happen to Rings of Power as well. And why are Siuan and Moiraine involved? They're just friends and complicites in an intricate plot. Looks like the Sam and Frodo are not just friends argument.

    • @disparutoo
      @disparutoo  Před 2 lety +12

      This is the issue with changing things is that it's an entire piece of work, it builds upon each other. So you CAN'T change anything because it makes it all come down. They wanted Emonds field to be an international airport, which means that Rand COULDN'T stand out, because it was just a blob of nothing in particular.
      And this is the issue they'll have all over. They use lines about how its possible to know where anyone comes from. While making the entire world have no character as they've destroyed everyones homelands.

    • @stevenmortelmans2877
      @stevenmortelmans2877 Před 2 lety +15

      @@disparutoo I fully agree. Some of the things they changed didn't even make sense when viewing it without having read the books. Like why they hated the Aes Sedai. Moiraine didn't really do anything wrong in the first place. If they had kept it like the books; Edmond's Field being so secluded that even the kingdom to which it belongs didn't bother to send tax collectors anymore and the only news the villagers got was from the occasional merchant, peddler or gleeman. Then it would make sense to be distrusting of Aes Sedai, because then they would've viewed Moiraine as a Darkfriend if she was parading with her ring.
      The changes they make to the characters will cause a ripple through the series (I think) because a lot of the actions from the books won't make sense anymore in the series. And I hate how they treated all the characters as voices for their politics and basically destroyed Mat, Lan and Loial. And the most impactful event of the story; the battle at Tairen's Gap and the Eye of the World were far less impactful than in the books. Adding to that, the Horn of Valere was just plain stupidity in the series...Padan Fain walking like a very confident man, instead of a creeping gollum-like person, taking the little box instead of a heavy golden chest, and just leaving... I'm sorry for ranting, but it gets on my nerves the more I progress in the story.

      @@disparutoo I wanted so bad to like this. I had been giddy with anticipation leading up to its release, and had largely steered clear of any spoiler or interview material. This show though… just wow. I have never been so disappointed by an adaptation in my life. I think at this point a more constructive approach to the convo would be what they actually got right. The videos would be much shorter though.

    Thank you, thank you, thank you! I thought I was losing my mind, being, seemingly, the only one who could see that what is called the Wheel of Time on Amazon is something else! I can't even watch season 2. I start to watch and just get bogged down with disbelief and incredulity at the sheer hubris and lack of respect to the time and effort Robert Jordan put into his books. I have loved this series since I picked up a copy of "The Path of Daggers", (the first WoT book I ever read, before backtracking the whole story). There is no artistic integrity or respect for the source material; this thing they call wheel of time should be called something else, because it certainly is NOT The Wheel of Time!

    They don't even take the opportunity to show that little hint after meeting the boys in Emond's Field, where Moiraine channels near Rand and he gets goosebumps or something.
    It's not until an entirely different book that you later realise he could detect when females are channeling nearby, and this was his way to tell.
    Edit: and it never explicitly makes the connection between the two, it's up to you the reader to make that link, and it was brilliant when I realised.

  • @FractalParadox
    @FractalParadox Před rokem +1

    Hot take: I don't think any of the swooping changes come from not liking the original or thinking they can do better. I think they come as 2 things: 1 - corporate mandates everyone has to abite to (like an internal memo saying 'make at least 2 characters gay plz, we need to meet that quota'); and 2 - wish fulfillment from the writers and directors. They didn't want to work on adaptations. They wanted to write and film their own original TV shows with massive budgets and their best stories, but are stuck with whatever the studios think will sell. So they get all over the adaption trying to insert their own ideas in. That is maddening to the fans, and often ends up sinking the show anyway, because those changes are in conflict with the original story, but the famous IP's what they have to work with, so the famous IP it is.

    • @tokenghost7777
      @tokenghost7777 Před 2 lety +2

      The Perrin from the books would have hung himself if he hurt Faile. The Perrin from the books was all about the struggle of how a reasonable man can justify and deal with the realities of war. Perrin, more than any other character in the books, was an example of a masculine role model... that’s why they replaced him with a wet and soiled bit of toilet paper. Strong masculine role models are not allowed.
      Pretty much every decision they made, every change they made, follows that same pattern: they looked at a character or idea and either completely ignored why it was done in the books, or they were not mentally capable of understanding it. I hope it was the latter, because stupidity is preferable to evil.

I could have even given them a pass for all of that... except they decimated the lore of Lews Therin Kinslayer and his 100 companions.
