This is it, this is the reaction I've been waiting for...it's my favourite tool song by eons. Thanks Polo. Also I'd like to point out that everyone on my block love Tool and even the popo, they're always trying to knock my door down to get inside for a better listen.😆😆
I've never understood why "Ticks and Leaches" & "Jambi" don't get more love.
Prob because ticks n leeches is right before lateralus and Jambi is right after vicarious. They both kind of get forgotten about
Both are TOP shelf songs
Jambi gets love for sure
he’s gotta check out Lost keys + Rosetta Stoned.
because they're trash
This song was my introduction to Tool half a lifetime ago. It still gives me chills after decades of listening to it.
Part of me is jealous of anyone getting to experience Tool songs for the first time.
Part of me pities them, that their life before this point did not have this music as part of its soundtrack.
“Boredom’s not a burden anyone should bear”
Ahhhhhhhh......well said man....hell yes....I ran into a drug dealer once....she asked what takes u to that special place......I said TOOL lmfao....and so it still is....and puscifer and a perfect circle...
That should be in stone
you are a part..of..me! 🤘
Same. I missed a chance to see them live at a Lallapalooza in Greenville South Carolina when I was 18 or 19 because I didn't know that there even was a third stage. But I did get to see them a few years later at Neyland Stadium with The Melvins opening. Lot of good music in the 90's
Something kind of sad about, the way that things have come to be, desensitised to everything, what became of subtlety.
So true
I personally think the static makes the drop even more impactful
What an excellent reaction! Can't tell you how much I enjoy listening to Tool with you. Thanks for sharing your journey.
Parabol/Parabola is a must. I know you'll get there, so I'll be patient ✌
Yes! Just don't pause at the transition.
I see what you did there 😉
I've been think the same thing but I can wait too. It'll be a good one
This song was probably a lot of people's first exposure to Tool. Perfect mix of "radio friendly song structure" and just Tooly Toolness Tooled up to ten. ✊🏽🔥
This is still one of, if not their best CD, or whatever they're calling it now. This one put them on the map and solidified them as one of the best of their era. This whole CD is phenomenal.
Agreed. This album absolutely put them on the map and on so many ppl’s radar, including me.
Technically "Sober" and "Prison Sex" put them on the map after there demo but yes "Stinkfist," is my favorite TOOL song as well as "Phnuma."
@@gabrielkain1 Technically you're right. I find discussing semantics to be pointless, so I'll phrase it this way. Yes, the two songs you mentioned did indeed put them on the map, this particular CD launched their careers though.
@@MacMc691 Fair enough.
You said it right that TOOL never gets old. Been listening to them since 1993 with the Undertow album and the music continually crosses decades.
It's just that timeless.
Freshman year of high school… This song sent me on a musical journey that changed the trajectory of my life. While I’m an engineer now, I spent 15 years as a musician playing and touring in bands. 1000% due to Stinkfist.
There’s no way that percentage is correct! And you’re an engineer, eh? Nice try, Steven. If that’s even your real name…
Just playin. I’m just blazed
I remember on MTV, this video was called Track 1 as opposed to Stinkfist...can't imagine why?....possibly my favorite Tool song...playing with the question (both literally and metaphysically) of alternatives to boredom...like a lot of Maynard's lyrics, there is the face value, and then there's the layers of symbolism that he leaves for you to discover, if you do choose. It's not mandatory to enjoy the experience, it's just there for those who care for such things. For thirty years, I have greatly appreciated those options...
The music video and the cover had the same imagery.
Maynard was so mad about MTV censoring their song title, he implored their fans to besiege MTV with phone calls and letters to protest.
MTV relented and even apologized on air.
@@riffgroove So satisfying. 😎🎸
Lateralus
Parabol
Parabola
Honestly, those early videos scared me and really weirded me out, even putting me off Tool for awhile! Intense.
Ive been loving this song since 1996, definitely doesn't get old. The lyrics are on another level too. Especially the bridge. Those chords are amazing
Is that the bridge at 10:30. That’s the greatest part
I'm in my mid 60's and grew up with 70's classic rock. Tool in the 90's were a revelation. Undertow and Aenima are heavy rock gold showing that hard rock music can have real melody. Stinkfist is a classic.
My first tool song. Where it alllllll began. Loving your journey man!
I bet I've listened to this song 10k times since it came out in 1996. You'll love it more as you hear it more.
“I love that part there”
Proceeds to rewind the whole song
Love these reactions man,keep rockin!
Still Waiting for Parabol/Parabola!!!! This will be Your Favorite TOOL Song!!!!
But don't pause at the transition!
Definitely my favorite tool song
I know this song was created well before social media but it feels like it was written about it. More and more and more all the time. That screechy sound in the beginning is the discomfort before you like what they’re giving you. Next thing you know they’re elbow deep and you’re wanting more.
I agree with your comparison. It’s such a quintessential human experience and it’s been going on for a long time, and now more than ever.
Yep
Good music is timeless and reflects the human experience
Been listening to Tool for 18 years now and it never gets old. Timeless music
TOOL army, “Disposition” “Reflection” and “Triad” must be next! Please listen to all of them together. Can’t wait :)
Yes he is ready for the holy Trinity now.
yeah! holy trinity
Without splitting the tracks up pleeeease
@@supliiiiiieeeeees yeah it's gotta be continious, and with the lyrics. do it polo!
are you trying to kill the man? you can only take so much
The reason the drums stand out so much is because while most bands highlight the vocals, Tool always just treated the vocals as just another instrument in the band. That can make it difficult to hear Maynard sometimes, but it really highlights the skill of the rest of the band.
TOOL are masters of a seemingly lost art in modern music, Dynamics. Something so Simple’s a volume adjustment has such a huge impact . You don’t need to be on 100 all the time.
Heard Radiohead before? :)
@@halfalligator6518 Mate, Radiohead is from the same era as Tool. Ask some new bands to try dynamic range.
@@SuperDoNotWantthe loudness wars fucked us 😂 hate all these “remasters” that are just borderline clipping the entire time with no real dynamic range. And casuals think the remasters are better
This man said, "That'll take you through a car trip." When this album first came out, I bought it just before a cross country trip on the Greyhound... and I just listened to the album on repeat... it was a surreal journey.
I met Danny Carey at a Meshuggah concert. Listen to Bleed by Meshuggah. The drumming is incredible. Even Danny Carey's jaw was on the floor. Tomas Hakke is by no means better than Danny, but the difficulty of the drums in that song is crazy. The guitarist created the drum part on a computer, and it took Tomas almost 9 months to learn it.
My husband is a massive Tool fan. I knew Sober from MTV but nothing else. This was the first song my husband blasted for me on his stereo 25 years ago and will forever be my favorite.
This is my favorite song of all time, ever, by anyone. It’s one of those songs that means different things to different people. For me, I had a moment of revelation listening to this in a really dark time in my life, and the lyrics “How can this mean anything to me if I really don’t feel a thing at all” brought me a point of view I desperately needed.
I base my outlook on almost everything on that sentiment now. If it means nothing, if I don’t feel anything positive, I dismiss it from my life entirely. Which is one way of interpreting the meaning here. The pointless clinging to a negative need that hurts you, and the realization to let that go for yourself.
The guitar part you don't like is supposed to make you feel uncomfortable! It's like a shot in a movie that makes your skin crawl just based on how it's framed and colored. I love that aspect of TOOL.
It literally made him make "The Face" and then he eased into it....
The pure artistry of Adam Jones ❤️
I love to surprise people and do this for karaoke 🎤🤘
Tool did get me through many long car trips though 😊
When Maynard's vocals start in after the instrumental, I swear that melody is a pocket I could live in for years
I remember seeing bootlegs of this song live when it was still being worked out and written and it was such a massive step forward from the undertow album in how they approached songwriting.
The live version they do of this song is so cool, they add a jam in the middle that really kicks up the intensity.
I have not been the deepest Tool fan but this is one my favorite songs of any group. Flow is just amazing and the desperation of the chorus gives goosebumps every time.
Dude, I am loving watching you react to Tool. Like others have said, I am a bit jealous of getting to hear them for the first time again but that is why these reactions are so great to watch. I love that you get it and are enjoying it as much as many of Tool's fans got to the first time through. I can't wait to see your reaction to Parabol/Parabola, Right In Two and Rosetta Stoned. Those are my jams.
After I heard "Sober" in middle school, I was hooked and couldn't wait until this album came out. Bought it the day it came out. It's an utter joy to watch you react to music I've loved from the time I was a kid. Sometimes Tool just finds us when we are ready and need it. Can't wait until you get through their whole discography.
Maynard knows what excellent musicians he has and always highlights each one and uses his voice to accompany the instruments not to out do them. Great reaction!
Still looking for you to react to O’Keefe Music Foundation doing 46 & 2 cover. Much appreciated🙏🏼
Joe Spradley is not wrong. The O'Keefe Music cover of "46 & 2" is chillingly good.
"Stinkfist" was my high school girlfriend's nickname.
was her b.o so bad you had to drive with your head out the window?
🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂
because she fisted you?
Damn yall must have been wild 😂
That was the beauty of being able to witness the change of their music throughout the years…. From raw to orchestra level.
You need to do “Jerk Off” from their first EP. It’s recorded live and is so raw and powerful. Shows you the aggression they are capable of bringing. Please do it for us. Also, “Ticks and Leeches” from Lateralus album. Both will be a different take for you.
I second that
Third! That and the original Opiate. Both so raw! It’s only wrong if you get caught!
Both of these songs please
Those "bad mic sounds" are excellent to boost your tension quickly. heh
Adam does those sounds using a metal guitar pick (I believe) scratching it against the cords around the pickups area.
Hell yeah, I'm glad you got to try this song out and liked it! It's one I enjoy a lot on the road, too, though it doesn't make going the speed limit very easy!
yeah, the intro can smart a little, but it's nothing to worry about, merely danny tuning up his tablas and adam turning up his guitar. this (the video, which is an amazing piece of art in itself) was my baptism into Tool. it is truly one of their greatest, so many brilliant sections, such darkness and fragility among such power and then euphoria as the song reaches its crescendo, and not toooooo long. i'm off to listen to it again.
My guy! You did it, welcome to the party! I’m so happy! That intro is Danny on some electro drums followed by Adam. Maynard sings in a megaphone on parts of the song. Check out the official video, it’s creepy and amazing.
You HAVE TO continue with the next song on the album, Eulogy... My favorite song since 96 🫶
After Undertow, we were so afraid that they couldn't put out something as good. I remember buying the cassette. I was blown away
When I sing along the "I don't want it, I just need it." Always has a salivating in my mouth.
I can’t wait to see you dive more into older Tool. This is the Tool that got everyone hooked on Tool 💖
Justin never gets enough credit for the master that he is. He slays this song and is the heartbeat throughout. Danny takes a back seat on this one.
Been waiting for Stinkfist.. My favorite Tool song!
They do an "Extended Stinkfist" version live. Check out the video recorded in Connecticut 2019.
I saw Tool at Coachella in 2006 and it opened with this song. I’ll never forget how wild the crowd went and everyone jumped at that first drop.
I was there too! Took my dad, last concert we went to before he died 3 yrs later
I used to jam this in my 1974 Chevy Nova on the way to college. My discs were so scratched, I couldn't rip them for mp3s. You could hear me coming, lol. NOTHING blows up your car speakers like Tool cranked. I should buy stock.
Never heard this one so going to be listening with you and giving my impressions. And oh this is jamming for tool. Most of it is hypnotic.
The first time I heard Tool was in 1993 after Undertow came out and I immediately went and bought it and then I went and bought their first album Opiate. Every Tool album is fucking amazing. This is probably my favorite tool song.
I was 19 yrs old and already a rabid Tool fan since 94. Working with a bunch of redneck drywall guys who nicked me Tool as a joke that stuck for life, on release day I had them stop the work van by the local record store and I grabbed the CASSETTE.. Jacked that dude into the work van hi-fi stereo deck and it changed those rednecks lives forever. Still know all of them all to this day.
There is only one Love, Thanks for these reactions. They matter.
God I love this band

PS - don't worry about video length, the Tool Army doesn't care.
First tool song I ever heard, back when it came out. Hooked ever since.
I will never forget when I saw Tool in DC at Capital One Arena (at the time The Verizon Center). I was in the cheap seats and not in the pit, so I had a great view of the crowd. When the intro ended and that riff kicked in I have never seen so many people head banging in synch before or since.
One of my favorite songs ever! Definitely a freaking awesome song to play REALLY loud in the car. With a good system... Now that's 🔥
Love your reacts. Basic song structure is Intro-Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Bridge-Chorus-Outro or ring out. Drums and bass are referred to as the rhythm section as they usually set the foundation for the time of a song. Also, usually what you're liking is the arrangement as well as where they are setting in the mix. (the frequencies they are in as well as how forward placed or loud they are in the final version of the song)For example, some times people complain Maynard is sometimes too low in the mix. Usually when you say note, you're meaning key. Just some music jargon for ya. Keep doing you!
There is not a bad song on this album!
Also, I love that your highest form of compliment is whether or not you’d listen to it in your 4Runner. 😂
Dude, I love how you were so into this one from the very beginning. I’m enjoying this journey with you
Once again another great reaction brother. You have to check out eulogy it's straight up fire, you will love it so much. Loving your TOOL journey mate, glad I'm here with you 🤘🌀🌀🤘
I got my first lap dance to this song lol. Has a special place in my heart ❤️ 😊
The TooL reactions are starting to go the way of how the Harry Mack reactions started. You become aware of the fact that you want to listen to and experience all of these as quickly as you can so that you can get them into your rotation and listen to them on your own....so the videos are coming out rapid fire....and I'm here for it just like I was for the Harry Mack collection. :D
This is my favorite tool album. There’s nothing like it.
100%
BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE...
First time I heard Tool, it was this song and I was hooked. Bought the album there and then.
Aenima was my first experience with Tool in 96 I was 14. It’s a far more digestible album in terms of song length and structure. It’s still my favorite. Now that I’m older I dig all their stuff but the long songs couldn’t keep my attention as a youth so it was aenima and A Perfect Circle for me back then. Thoroughly enjoying listening to them again for the first time with you. Keep it up.
This song gives me chills .
One of the Toolest Tool songs ever! Loving you loving the journey, sir. It's a fun ride!
Bro, you got to be a trendsetter and be one of the few people that has reacted to the tool song 4 degrees
ÆNIMA is my favorite Tool album. It combines their cerebral composition style with the raw sound from Undertow. I feel it's their perfect in between. Every Tool album is perfect in some ways but this is the one I will always connect more spiritually. Hands down.
Please make Tool your first concert you ever go to! It will probably be a while since they just toured last year, but it'll be so worth it! Oh, and make sure you vlog the whole thing for us to see! It's an experience like no other!
If you like songs where the drummer just beats the hell out of the drums, go No one knows by Queens of the Stone age. Dave Grohl goes absolutely ham on the drums, good film clip as well shows off just how hard he's going, even during the lower parts of the song.
No one knows is good, but you can't compare that to this.
Your reactions are great, you pick up on the idiosyncrasies that make Tool so unique. Good on ya👌
This was the first Tool song I heard, I loved it, had absolutely no idea what they were talking about, or even the title, lol, till my grown son explained it to me. Still love it, but definitely changed what I thought it was about. Yes, I'm old, but been listening to metal since the 70s, and the sound of this does it.
If you want to hear Maynard's voice just unrestrained, there are two collaborations he did and both are must listens -
Passenger with Deftones
Mohammed My Friend with Tori Amos.
you won't regret either.
To think I was 15 years old in 1996 when this was released and I heard the album "Ænima" for the first time with friends, starting off with this one, following with "Eulogy", "H", "Forty-six & Two", "Hooker...", "Ænema", "Pushit" AND "Third Eye" on the SAME ALBUM! My mind was properly blown - and still is!
This one's a banger. It was one of their most conventional song structures, verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus. Made it great for radio. But it still showcases very distinctive Tool elements. The switch from very clean to scream vocals, the time signature change from verse to chorus, prominent/audible bass, and the added 9th when they want a pretty chord. Legendary song and legendary band. The mtv video is a work of art in its own right.
Oh God here we go oh yeah I've been listening to tools since around 1996 I'll be 43 this year I'm inside my favorite band I love all the reaction videos helps me relive listening to this song you know the first time that's what all these reaction channels do so thank you sir can't wait to watch this
Somebody probably already said this, but Danny gets more of a bongo/tom sound because he has no snares on his snare. That's his signature sound
Nice! One of my favorite TOOL songs.
Liking your channel bro. Keep it up.
Yes! My 2nd fav TOOL song. Always reminds me of Carlos Castenada’s writings about “The Law of Diminishing Effect”….
Danny hits the drums like they owe him money. Also, this is the original Tool lineup with Paul D'Amour on bass. Justin has yet to join the band when they recorded this track.
I think Paul was on the demo but Justin plays the recording on the album
One of the hardest Tool songs to learn on guitar cuz that sound you don't like is Adam de-tuning and re-tuning as he does a slide with his pick. That may mean nothing to you but trust me, it's really difficult.
Hell yesss!! 💪🏼
This is my first song I play in the am (atm) to get me down the gym in 'beast ' mode ✌️🤣
I love that you are rifling through tool songs. So many more to go!!!!
I only watch Tool and a perfect circle reactions on youtube. Watching people discover Tool especially just brings a smile to my face. Tool is the pinnacle hands down. It doesn't get any better
This was the very first Tool /video I ever saw and I was like. “What did I just hear/see? And I was hooked
You should do the live extended version of this song. They add in a badass funky instrumental right after the soft breakdown
And you can hear who's never seen them do it live by the number of people still trying to scream, "I'll! keep! digging!!" - though the music has gone wonky.
First Tool song I ever heard back in high school... still gets me going.
We gotta get this man more oatreon subs cause with all these tool songs on his playlist now, he’s gonna get so many tickets 😂
It’s been crossing my mind to hit him with a donation lately lol….not only do I want to hear reactions for me I want to nudge him in a good direction.
There’s music I haven’t heard in forever that he would like ….obviously more Tool but I assume he would like Rage Against the Machine. There’s other genres that he would like going off of previous reactions
Get him situated with some more 4Runner tunes 😂
@@davidaldridge5716 I feel like after the last reaction he needs “the package” or “pet”
I cant believe till this day that my first concert EVER was TOOL, no concert has been anywhere close to it, and honestly it was easily one of the craziest, best experience of my life, and when stinkfist came on in the set? Fucking insane
I could watch you all day listening to tool in fact I did recently. In a way I feel like I'm exp for first time again through you. Rock on!
Thanks for cranking out the Tool reviews.
I wish this song and the rest could have been part of your life as long as ours have. Welcome to the family 🤘😁🤘
“There’s that sound I don’t like”
2 seconds later: Screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetch!
Love seeing him rock out to this one.
Loving your content man. Personally, the lyrics are one of the most important aspects to me and I love to hear your thoughts on them. The beauty of the vagueness is that you can find your own meaning in it, so it doesn’t matter what other people think, but it’s nice to revisit with new perspectives. Just saying all this to say, we need the lyrical breakdowns!! Thank you polo and keep pushing out gold
When I saw that at the concert in 2019 they ended the show with this song and they changed it up. They made the song longer. This was also the time when they allowed us to record on our phones so i keep going back to my stinkfist live video on my phone.
Danny does hit hard, but the real reason you're able to hear the drums so clearly is because he's got perfect tempo. His heads ring so clean and crisp that you hear how on-tempo he really is.
Great temp but also one of the hardest hitting drummers , so powerful. You can hear the Bonham influences.
Let’s not forget the excellent quality of the recording
